Updated Mickey Planter directions page 3!!!!!!!!!

Jeff, what are the dimensions, and how many of those bricks did you use? :)

I'm so hooked on doing this in our yard. DH said that he'll provide the materials, if I do the work. Isn't he swell?

I'd love to try too, not sure what DH would say but would love to know the dimensions. Maybe I'll give the kids a summer project. :)

That looks great Jeff!! When are you coming to do mine? The ground has almost thawed in the Great White North and most of the snow is gone.....we're down to 4 feet. ;)

I know, I know I didn't get to it. Let's just say we had a fiasco with the dealership and getting my van in for some service. :(

I will measure tonight! I promise!

Hey, no problem. I'm not impatient.

Did my husband PM you telling you not to cough up the information? ;)

Methinks there is a whole bunch of us waiting for that answer!:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Ok, here's the dimensions (from the outside edge of the bricks):

The main portion of Mickey's head is 8 ft across.
The ears are 5 feet 2 inches across.

I did not figure these out from pictures or anything, I just layed the bricks down in what looked like the correct sizes.

The distance from the center of the head to the center of the ears is approx 64 inces. From center of one ear to center of the other ear is 96 inches.

The flag pole was the center, and everything was based on that. I tied a little string to the pole and dragged it around in a circle using a can of spray paint to mark the edge of the head. I pounded some PVC tubing into the ground temporarily at the center location of the ears to use the string/circle markings.

We removed all grass from in between the circles. I located what appeared to be the lowest portion of the lawn and dug down about 3 inches on the outside edges of the Mickey where the bricks would be layed. I laid down approx 2 inches of compacted limestone paver base as a bed for the bricks. Once all the bricks were leveled and laid, we filled with dirt.

Supplies:

123 bricks (8 inch wide 'honey' color)
11-12 bags of paver base
about 40 cubic feet of dirt
And almost a ton of Elbow Grease ;)

DW planted mostly annuals, but there were some perennial bushes/flowering plants. We'll fill in with mulch in a few weeks after the plants have had a chance to grow a bit.

I also ran an underground electrical connection for a spot light on the flag and maybe some ground lighting sometime in the future.

Questions?

If you plan ahead, you can have ALL of this delivered. I didn't and had to cart it all myself. :(

You are wonderful! My DH, Bob, will be sooooo happy to get this information  and get started!

Actually, he laughed when he saw the picture, and we even had a good dscussion of where we could fit one in in the backyard. Thanks for figuring all this stuff out for us!

Oh, thank you so much!! Now...to convince my DH to do it.

Because of the way the bricks are built, you could easily make it smaller if you don't have enough space. You could always run up to the local Home Improvement center and lay some down on the ground to see what will fit. Remember, the ears are the smallest so those would drive how 'small' you could make the whole planter.

And for those who want it bigger, you can use the 12 inch bricks and make it quite a bit wider/taller.

I would also like to point out that DW did a <i>lot</i> of work right along side of me, so make sure you get your work gloves out also!
