Updated Disney Gift Card Deals and More

On Saturday 5/25/24, I redeemed Discover cash for Macy's egift cards $200 & $105 - both were drained, same day. We called Discover and they called Macy's, Macy's CS said the $200 was used in Queens on Friday 5/24/24, $3.66 and the remaining balance was spent online.

Discover CS said, my client purchased the gift cards on Saturday an hour ago. Macy's reissued both cards but said it will take 3-4 business days.
I doubt RMN will be at 12% cb, so that's $50 not earned.
That is concerning and I'm curious how it could happen. I would assume that e-gift cards are generated at time or purchase/points redemption. With my Disney GC's, I always transfer from physical cards to e-gift cards because I assume a certain level of security (although e-cards can be easily stolen by anyone who hacks into your e-mail).

Macy's CS didn't go into any explanation, after the Discover CS said my client purchased the gift cards on Saturday an hour ago. There was an awkward pause.
Discover CS told us when we placed the order, it was then processed by Macy's and that's when she called them.
When you click on the link that Discover sends you, the link opens up on Macy's website, not Discover.
If Macy's is in fact repurposing their egift card numbers with the same four digits, that's going to be a nightmare for consumers.

Macy's online, I placed three separate orders for the same item. The first order went through just fine. Those gift cards were purchased in-store at Kroger 4x fuel, I bought two - $500 Retail Therapy. Then we went to Meijer and on two separate accounts, we bought $50 Macy's gc.

The last gc purchase was through Discover as I needed more for the second order. After placing the second order it was cancelled immediately. So I went through chat.

Chat told me my egift's, the ones from Discover, had zero balance. So I placed the order anyway covering the balance with my Discover CC. That order was cancelled as well which prompted a call to Discover. You all know the rest. As of today, we're waiting for the egifts to reset so I can place my second order.

In earnest, I believe Macy's doesn't want to pay out the 12% cb via RMN. The third order should have gone through. I didn't use the Discover egifts, instead I used my cc to pay the remaining balance and there is no issue with my cc.

In my many years of experience, Macy's has become untrustworthy.
And yes, they have the product in stock I need and at the lowest price point but after my egifts clear and I can finally place my order, I'll never do business with them again.

Here's a copy of my Macy's order history.

I always transfer to a physical card that I’ve had a long time. Not sure if this actually protects me or not. I thought it did

Well, I’m glad it seems like at least Discover was on your side in this transaction. I can picture plenty of “resellers” washing their hands of it even when there is clearly an issue.

Two things:
  • Older DGC may not work properly, we have DPs on this. So it's important to get new physical DGC from time to time via ShopDisney.
  • When transferring your DGC to another card, old or new, there's no protection.
How to protect yourself
  • Keep a spreadsheet: Date of Purchase, Location (where you bought your gc), Amount of DGC, Method of Payment, Date of Transfer and the entire account # of the gc you transferred the fund to.
  • You should also keep your gc receipts, including the ones you buy online for egifts. Keep them in a separate file folder by date. You also need to save all gift cards. Everything can be trashed after your vacation.
If there is an issue, Disney will require you to have this information.
You have to prove the DGC belong to you.

Thank you for this. I do some but not all of these things. I will start doing all of this moving forward.

I agree. I try to keep records of my purchases, and have thankfully never had an issue. I just know that new physical cards from store shelves are low hanging fruit for fraud, so it’s better than nothing to at least eliminate those as an issue.

Thankfully, for my next trip, we’re doing a package, which allows me to actually spend the GCs as I buy them. In the past, we’ve done room only and I hate holding one or more thousands of dollars on cards for months because I have to wait to liquidate them at the hotel.

FYI, I only book room-only when staying on WDW property. After I buy a DGC, I call it in and they deduct the amount from my balance.
I find packages to be more expensive.

This is also completely automated, so you don’t have to wait in a queue to talk to a human. You can just choose the option to make a payment and enter the card numbers.

It would be nicer if they let you do this online though.

That seems to be the limit. Wouldn’t let me do a fourth order. Haha
How often do they offer a discount on Disney gift cards? If I can only buy 9 and have to spend 50 to get the discount it turns out to be 95.5% which is worse than Target. If they offer these kind of deals regularly then it'd be worth my 50 for subscription.

In the past you can do another set of orders after it’s been 24 hours. Not sure yet on this one. And I’m not sure. I feel like there were 2-3 times last year? But I was sick last year so it all blends together.

I also use my Best Buy card. So each set of these I was earning at least $10 in certificates.

I use a USBank Cash + card and have electronics stores as my 5% cashback category.
