Absolutely Target and Walgreens are my faves when it comes to store spend! I came to the same conclusion that waiting for another round of Apple GC deals during Thanksgiving would be worth it if I delay my iPhone purchase till early December. Thanks for the strategy recommendations!

Notable cash back ones from last year were 20% Chase cashback at Kohls, Happy Cards Amex Offer $15 off $100 are two that come to mind right off the top of my head.

Another thing that should be pointed out, if you buy an iphone (or for that matter anything) with a gift card, you lose the extended warranty that your credit card would give you. For example, the iphone comes with a 1 year warranty and if you pay with a Chase Freedom card, Chase will extend the warranty for a 2nd year. However, I think most people would feel that 20% off is worth more than extending the warranty.

We turned on find as soon as DS was done hugging it! Christmas gift a few years back.
Over time an issue developed with the battery and he never told us, most likely thinking he'd be in trouble. Finally he came clean and the menfolk went to the Apple store, they couldn't figure it out. A few days later they called him and told him he could pick up his new phone.
Everything was done in-store. I'm sure he was so relieved but DH told me DS had a very hard time giving up his password.

I’m also in the market for a new iPhone. I plan to use my Amex BCP (6% back on groceries) that has a $10 back on $150 grocery store purchase offer on it at Meijer this week on an Apple gift card. That’s a great deal if I can use my mperks for fuel and still a good deal if I only use them for groceries. Can anyone confirm this deal will work for Apple gc’s? It says phone cards are excluded but doesn’t specifically mention Apple. My guess is the exclusion is on the prepaid phone plan cards.

Fair Warning using Promotional Gift Cards

I've had two recent incidents using store brand promotional gift cards.

• Meijer: Buy X gc, get $15 Meijer gc
• Walgreens: Same, Get $15 Walgreen gc
• I received activation slips from both locations for the actual gc and for the $15 gc.

The first incident took place at Meijer, I used $10 off $50 purchase, and one $10 mPerk reward and tried using the $15 Meijer gc. The cashier insisted the gc worked but it wasn't showing up on the screen and it didn't reflect on my total. Casher was very argumentative and didn't budge, so I had to ask for a manager. The manager Kim agreed it wasn't listed and Kim had to manually add it in. It took a few tries but in the end it worked.

Second incident took place at Walgreens, I stacked coupons and offers and swiped the gc but it didn't work. Same thing, manager had to manually add it in but at least the cashier wasn't argumentative.

With the holidays coming, pay close attention to the screen my friends. After all discounts and coupons have been applied, look at the total then swipe your gc and check your receipt for any errors.

Why aren't these promotional gift cards scanning correctly in the first place, it should be seamless.

Fair Warning - Speaking of Meijer

I purchased 2 - $500 Visa gift cards during their last promotion, registered them the same day and the day after they were wiped clean! These are are cards I would avoid buying at Meijer.


These are registered to DH so when I called, the Rep could not help me at all. Wouldn't even verify the balance on the second card so I did that online only to find out it too was wiped. Both cards had a minimal balance left of 46¢ & 67¢ on them. Purchase made in NY.

I tend to upgrade my iPhone annually so an extended warranty doesn't come into play, but I do purchase AppleCare+ and let it bill to my Apple ID monthly with all the discounted GCs. It ends up costing "more," but I only keep the device a year and it pained me in the past that I purchased a 2 year AppleCare+ plan when I was flipping the thing in a year.

There is also an AppleCare+ plan that includes theft and loss, but it's priced higher.
