Not totally on topic, but relates to gift cards…. There are news reports that all Amazon Gift cards have been pulled in my Western NY area. Wondering if other areas are seeing the same thing? The reporter tried all the grocery, convenience, drug & dollar stores he could think of, Amazon spots are all empty. Gift cards are available directly from Amazon. . The news report spoke to a marketing person who said it could be a few things, from coming out with a new marketing promo or breach or problem with activation codes. Another possibility relates to the % of the sale that goes to the merchants. Amazon has not commented. Any other areas seeing this?

I didn't look at the big display but there were still amazon cards at self checkout. I'm in the Seattle area.

I know there's a sign on the big display that Amazon gc don't get 4x fuel points any more just 2. So there's really no reason for me to buy them any more. It's the only gc Kroger has done that to throughout their chains. It's weird and I wonder if there's correlation to what you're seeing and the fuel points.

I have a lot of Staples offers on my cards, including my Inks and DH's. Now to decide how much to get... Hopefully a shopping portal will be helpful
Do you have the online only offers? Do you know if they are good for ordering GCs (not prepaid visa/MC)?

A local store near me (in NY, but not Western NY) said Amazon asked retailers in NY State to remove gift cards from July 1 through Oct 1. I don't know why.

Maybe I'm unlucky, but the only card (out of 9 Chase cards in the family) that doesn't have the Staples offer this time is Ink Cash (office 5% back card). Did they strategically do that to you this time, too?

I think I only got it on the cards that I didn't use it on in the Spring. Definitely not on all cards this time around.

I did not get the Staples offer on any of my 7 Chase cards this time, so it is definitely highly targeted. However, I have found with Chase offers they sometimes can show up in your account a few days after everyone else gets them, so definitely worth checking your account again at the end of the week.

Even though Target gave this family a full refund, that might not always be the case which doesn't help.

Years ago, Bed Bath & Beyond had their gc racks out in the open making double dipping an option. Buy a specific discounted gc elsewhere and then use it at BB&B to buy another discounted gc. Then they moved the rack behind the cashier's, if you wanted one you had to ask for it and during purchase the cashiers watched you like a hawk preventing double dipping. After this change, I don't recall anyone posting their gc were drained which leads me to this Q.

If you had the choice what would you prefer; gc's in the open or behind a controlled counter?

Sorry to be late to the party on this, we were away on vacation last week.

I think for most stores (especially supermarkets), having the gift cards behind the counter is just impractical. They are not going to be able to keep them at the cash register, and if they keep them at customer service that is just going to make the customer service lines even longer. Some stores don't even have customer service open all the time, and stores like Aldi and Lidl don't even have a big customer service desk. And remember, their target customers are not people like us who only buy gift cards when they are on sale, for other people who are just buying a present for someone, they want to look through all the gift cards and see what is available. I can't imagine those people are going to want to wait on line at customer service just to find out what gift cards are available and then hold up the customer service line while they hem and haw deciding which gift card they want. It just doesn't seem realistic.

When I was visiting my mother in New York city a few weeks ago, I stopped in a Walgreen's to get something and could not believe how more than half the store was locked up in glass cases and you needed to get an employee to unlock it if you wanted to purchase that stuff. Can you imagine how much extra time that adds on to every shopping trip? That is what it would be like if they locked up the gift cards. I just don't see it ever happening.

However, there are some things stores can start with, like keeping the gift card rack in an area right in the front where people are watching or have a camera by the gift card rack. The 2 Office Depot/ Office Max stores in the Philadelphia area both keep their gift card rack in the back corner of the store (I call it the morgue area). Someone could literally take every gift card and replace them and no one would know the difference.

My friend bought a $50 DGC at Target. When she checked into Disney resort she handed card to CM who scanned card and told her the card only had $9 she said the label covering the numbers had not been removed. How is this possible?
