Hi all - have been sporadically around (though still active in my swaps) for the past few weeks and wanted to update everyone. My dad passed away last night after being in the hospital about 3 weeks. We took him in because he was acting loopy and he's had heart and lung issues a long time (lifetime smoker) and we'd seen similar behavior before when his C02 was high. It wasn't that and it took them a few days to figure out what it was outside of some minor issues. They determined a few days later that he had lung cancer and they were pretty sure it had spread to his liver. He was out of it and fighting the nurses and such for about 5 days before coming back to us and then was in the hospital about another week having tests and getting oxygen under control before he was supposed to go to rehab 2 weeks ago. They were going to take him to rehab on a Wed night and the nurse noticed he wasn't breathing so well so they kept him. When I went the next morning, he was in respiratory distress and after a series of people came in they sent the critical pulmonary specialist, who happens to be my neighbor. He said he needed to put him on a respirator and that he was concerned about how he would do getting off of it. We decided with my dad that we wanted to do this and give him the opportunity to get better and spend whatever time he has with us. He was on the respirator 11 days and this weekend started getting worse and weaning was no longer a viable option. He got worse again Sunday and yesterday and we decided to take him off the respirator and he died about 10 minutes later.
So far I am ok - not sure why - a bit of relief that he didn't suffer and didn't have to sit in a nursing home facing horrible suffering from the lung cancer.
We told my son (who will be 8 on Sunday) exactly what was going on when we put him on the respirator and he has been a real trouper. He's just an amazing kid and last night he came up to check on me and said he was going to be strong for me. He's just amazing.
