UPDATE:Posts 50,53,54! Oops...I did it again! Miss Piggy does DxDP, Sept. 2010"

Thanks for the reviews, and for the warning!

My mother and I are going to be doing 15 days on the Deluxe Dining Plan in December, and your reviews are extremely helpful...I'm just happy that I lost so much weight in nursing school, lol!

You will not go hungry on Deluxe, even if you don't like 1/2 the food on your plate, the other half will fill you up! And congrats on nursing school...know what you mean about losing weight while there. My brother is embarking on 2nd (or maybe it's his 3rd?) career...started nursing school at age 52. And he has lost about 50 lbs. All that walking & on his feet all day did it.

For entrees, we wanted us some rare beef, so DH & I both ordered the Yachtsman “Prime” New York Strip Steak 12-oz Strip Steak, Peppercorn Brandy Sauce, and White Cheddar Potato Gratin 42.00 There's also a bit of green veg included on the plate.

Anyway, scoring Yachtsman Steakhouse on 1-10 scale...sorry, just a 5. Just average.
:-( Would we return? No. Would we recommend? No. Over-priced and under-quality. Hope Flying Fish is better, otherwise I'm cancelling January reservations for signature restaurants and going into "never-again" mode!

Loving your reviews.

July 09 I ate at Yachtsmen twice. The first time - okay but not great (maybe a little higher than 5 but not much) but the second time I ate here it was phenominal. I ordered the Porterhouse and it was so much better than the New York Strip. And the garlic mashed potatoes were out of this world.

The one thing I'll say is that for me, the biggest down fall for this restaurant is that it's inconsistent.

Makes me wonder if they are consistently mediocre on the New York Strip...I so wish I'd ordered something different so we would have seen if they managed to do a different steak better. At this point, not sure I'd go back to try something else, but maybe someday.:rolleyes1

Have to start out with an apology...by the time we actually got our pastries for breakfast, we were running late so we ate quickly & left-I didn't take the camera out to photo this breakfast...there are pictures here, but I cheated and re-used old photos...I mean I went "green" and recycled from previous trips. :rolleyes1: But anyway...

We had planned to get pastries from France or Norway on Friday night, but forgot to get them in Norway, and then by the time we got to France, the bakery was closed (was EMH night so we were wandering by there late) So we stopped at Boardwalk Bakery to get breakfast. I've heard so much about this place...guess I was expecting something more? Like a bigger place, for one thing. It was incredibly packed in there. And the group at the counter was a very large family...like Mom/Dad and I don't know how many kids, but more than 2 and probably less than 6...couldn't really tell, because there was much to-ing-and-fro-ing amongst them. Anyway, instead of grabbing breakfast components for the little ones, Mom was having them each pick out what they wanted - only, just one item at a time. So she'd send them over to the juice cooler. And they'd come pack with a juice box...but then the next kid would go, and get a juice bottle. So kid #1 would go switch for a bottle too. And then Mom'd send them to the cereal rack. And they'd get their cereal box or bar. And then she'd send them back to the cold drinks cooler to get a carton of milk. Only kid #3 would get chocolate milk, and then the other two or more would want that, and Mom'd send them all back to switch up their milk. And then multiple decisions about breakfast sandwiches, and pastries from the case, and so on. And, every component was chosen/put back/re-chosen/debated. Cute kids, but not very good at making decisions! O.M.G:scared1: Hey, I'm all for teaching kids how to shop...but not in a tiny bakery with a long line of people behind you, near a major theme park in the last hour before the parks open!

After about 15 minutes of that learning exercize, with ever-increasing lines behind us, one of the counter servers actually came around the corner of the counter and had us form a 2nd line. We made it to the front of that line before the other 2 helpers finished ringing up the "can't decide but probably want one of everything family." When we got out of there, the line was now about 20-25 people long. I understand the concept of letting kids choose their breakfast...but PUH-lease if you're getting that much food, find a table service place and work with a professional waiter, lol. I saw the family looking for a table later...then had like 5 full trays of food & drinks.

I just realized it sounds like my dining review theme is "rant-on-families"...two meals in a row I'm complaining...so I want to make it clear I really am not anti-kid! Not meaning to harp on it, but having less-than-stellar dining experiences two days in a row due to parental units gone awry...just wondering what these parents were doing when common-sense got handed out?

And that's actually the last I'll have to say about it, since we had no other hold-ups due to families:upsidedow

Anyway, once we got up there, we were a little disappointed to see that instead of unique bakery options, all the breakfast pastries & muffins were basically the same as every other resort counter service. :confused3 So after that long wait, same ole-same ole. Hubby chose a cinnamon roll...I picked an old favorite:a chocolate croissant. Both were very standard Disney resort bakery items. They were good, and definitely did the trick for quick breakfast... but nothing special - or any different - from the same items at Port Orleans or Pop Century counter service.

I don't know why, but I really thought the Boardwalk Bakery breakfast pastries would be different from "regular" resort counter service? Like Main Street Bakery at MK is different - everything there is at least a bit "more" than resort counter service versions. Anyway, it was good enough, but I wished we'd remembered to get something special from World Showcase bakeries. Live & learn, lol. Here's the old pictures, in case you're wondering what these items look like. The cinnamon roll was from POFQ Sassagoula Food...note that it does not fill the plate. Same with the Boardwalk Bakery version. The Main Street Bakery version is nearly twice as tall, and barely fits on the plate.

Here's a gander at the standard Disney Chocolate Croissant. This pic is from POP Century counter service. I've had these from several different counter service as well as one from Starring Rolls Bakery in DHS. The Starring Rolls Bakery version was about 1/2 again larger than this...had to be a good 4" tall. That's kind of what I was expecting at Boardwalk Bakery...bigger & better. Nope, it was the same as the regular resort versions--about 2" tall. Still tasty & all that, but nothing better than the other resort counters.

The total for the two pastries would have been $6.15, but we used 2 of our 8 of our 8 snack credits to cover breakfast. Would we return...sure, but to try the other bakery items, not the pastries. The pastries were fresh, and good...just not different. Give 'em an 8 out of 10.

We also picked up our kazillioneth set of refillable mugs: $28 dollars worth, according to Disney. Have to say, this is getting downright silly, at this point. I have enough red/black refillable mugs with assorted black/yellow/red lids/handles to do a formal dinner for 16 now (yeah, sure, I'd use Disney refillable mugs at a formal dinner...isn't there a refillable mug course somewhere in there to clear the palate? lol.) Anyway, about ready to start turning 'em down on the mugs...I think next trip I'll just bring the old ones and if they're still using those, I'll just leave the new ones "on the table" so to speak, and use the old ones instead...I surely don't need more mugs! Everyone I know who might want one already has one, too. Seriously, what am I going to do with all these mugs? Have plenty at home & condo. And it was exceptionally silly to get 2 new ones at Boardwalk, since they don't even have self-serve drink fountains...they don't actually use the mug itself to give you refills...you just show your mug & they give you the beverage you want in a to-go cup so there's no cross-contamination on the behind-the-counter fountain machines. So we carried around new mugs that we didn't drink out of. I really do wish they would change the mugs more often-or just scan your card to see that you're on the Dx or QSDP and just give you the beverage of choice in a to-go container. Silly that you must have the actual mug with you, but that's what they told us at the Boardwalk Bakery counter.

We spent the morning at Epcot...love the boat trip from Boardwalk to Epcot in the morning. How relaxing on a bright beautiful morning. I know we could walk but the boat was approaching the dock just as we were finishing up breakfast, so we caught the boat. We figured we'd be hoofing it all day anyway so might as well try it out.

We did get held at the ticket turnstyle until about 8:50, but by the time we walked around to the rope-drop entrance to Innoventions, they were just opening the "Park" with characters so hubby was at the head of the pack being escorted to Soarin'. When I caught up, he was just coming from the Fast Pass kiosk, so we did a walk-on to Soarin'...took about 10 minutes, and half of that was walking-through time. After that, we headed for Captain EO...wow. That was fun --campy fun, and very nostalgic...I originally saw Capt. EO on my first trip ever to Disney World, with my oldest son when he was 10 (he won a trip there!) Anyway, we did a very leisurely 2 hours of touring Future World, then headed for Italy and our lunch reservation at Via Napoli.

We were the 4th party checking-in around 11:20 for our 11:30 reservation. We did specifically request a 2-top table (did not want the long communal table in the center). They started seating right at 11:30 and we were in our chairs by 11:31. Our waiter, Favio, showed up right away, very nicely explained the menu options with the Deluxe dining, and took our beverage orders. Well, it was only 11:30 AM., and I don't usually drink alcohol this early in the day...but as the Flamingo and Parrothead Flags say, "it's 5 o'clock somewhere"...and we were in Italy, right? And at 11:30 EST, it's actually already 5:30 PM. in Italy. So time for booze, lol. The drinks showed up in about 2 minutes...never had bar drinks delivered so fast.

Hubby had an Italian beer he's had before at Disney: Moretti, at $9.00 a glass. A bit steep for a beer, but he likes that beer. Course, I had a glass of wine at the same cost: Rose Regale. I think I had a glass of this from one of the kiosks on the World Showcase ? Anyway, I know I've had it before & loved it. Didn't see a description on the Allears menu, so I went straight to the source: The Rosa Regale website: "Rosa Regale has a delicate bouquet of rose petals and offers sensuous flavors of fresh raspberries and strawberries. Its effervescence is softer than that of champagne, yet it yields a persistent and delicate pink froth. Its lively garnet color makes other sparklers pale in comparison." Mmmmmm, yeah what they said! If this stuff didn't cost $9 a glass, I would have had several glasses. Which is probably just as well I didn't since it would have been a very long walk back to Boardwalk on wobbly legs, lol. Anyway...LOVE this wine. Nothing like a bit o'bubbly to cap a nice morning at Epcot.

Favio our wonderful waiter had explained we could have the "sharing appetizer if we wanted to use both our appetizers for one." So we chose the "Fritto Misto - An assortment of just-fried seasonal vegetables, fish and cheese to be shared at the table. Arancini (rice balls-yummy), Mozzarella (cheese slabs), calamari (squid), melanzane (eggplant), asparagi (asparagus), zucchini (same), carciofi (artichokes)- $24.00" Wonderful app...we thought it might be too heavy...after all, everything was breaded...but the breading was very light & crispy. Nice dip, too. Tons of veggies, very fresh (still crispy within the breading so not over-cooked), and though we thought the "fried rice balls" sounded kind of gross, we took Favio's word for it & tried them. Actually quite good! (they are the round balls to the right of the sauce) Reminded us of well-made fritters...not doughy/sticky at all. The calamari was the ring-only kind, and plenty of it. Loved it. (on the right hand side of the picture) All the veggies were on the left...the long pieces are asparagus, the other smaller pieces were the artichokes and eggplant. The fried mozzarella was rectangular pieces...can just barely see them up by the lemon, near the spout of the sauce boat. Must say, that app is extremely generous for 2 people to share...would easily serve 3-4. Would have made a large meal for one person.

Both of us wanted pizza, and different pizza. We both chose "white" pizzas (no tomato sauce.) Hubby went for the "Quattro Formaggi: Mozzarella, Parmesan, Fontina, Provolone. Individual 17.00, Large 28.00, 1/2 Meter 36.00 - $28.00" Translated: 4-cheese wood-fired pizza, no tomato sauce. Since we were one the dining plan, hubby gets the Individual for $17.00. He RAVED about this pizza...love, love, loved it. But very large! He was only able to eat 1/2 (this pizza could easily have served both of us...and we still wouldn't have finished it.)

Since seeing the Via Napoli menu posted a few months ago, and hearing early reviews, I have been intrigued by the prospect of ham & fruit on a pizza: love ham, love cheese, love melon, love pizza. How could you go wrong on that? So I chose the "Prosciutto E Melone (ham & canteloupe). Fontina (Alpine Italian cow's milk cheese), Mozzarella ("pizza" cheese, lol), Pecorino (sheep's milk cheese). Individual 17.00, Large 28.00, 1/2 Meter 36.00 - $28.00" Short version: ham , melon, and 3 cheese pizza. So, anyway, they did not go wrong with that pizza! OUTSTANDING. LOVED IT! But again, I would like to meet the "individual" who could eat this whole pizza...at least after an adult beverage and 1/2 of an over-large appetizer . I suppose there are people out there who can finish one of these off, but not me! I couldn't even eat 2 full pieces (it's cut into 4 huge slices.) I ate just over 1.5 slices, and decided to save the rest...we were heading back to Boardwalk for a nap after lunch, so I knew it would go right into the fridge and be fine for the next day. Besides, I definitely wanted to save a little room for dessert.

Hubby chose the "Gelato Frizzante - Ice cream soda Italian style, made with San Pellegrino Aranciata (orange sparkling water, made with orange juice) and Vanilla Ice Cream - $10.00" A lovely looking, and delicious tasting, ice cream soda. As the waiter walked this dessert to our table, heard several "ooh, what's that...I want one of those" from surrounding tables. The people at the next table had to ask him how it was because it looked so pretty and yummy...they ended up ordering one for dessert too.

I've read about the "Coppa Di Brutti Ma Buoni - 'Ugly, but good.' Amarena cherry and vanilla gelato sundae with ugly, but good cookies of carnevale - $10.00" and that sounded like something I'd like. I did...it was fabulous. Don't know what kind of cookie that is in there, you'd expect it to get mushy with all the ice cream & gooey goodness but it stays crunchy/chewy somehow -even the chunks that were buried in ice cream. Very good...but have to suggest this would be a great dessert to split with someone because it's huge.

To sum up Via Napoli....I've seen several reports of terrible service at Via Napoli...that was not our experience at all. We had awesome service...our waiter was always there when we needed him,but no hovering or annoying constant interruptions...perfect, professional service but warm & friendly at the same time. Ambiance is kind of fun in Via Napoli..yes, of course the tables are way too close together like all Disney restaurants, but it was fun watching the pizza going into the giant "mouth" ovens (we weren't even seated in the main room but could still see the ovens.) The decor in Via Napoli is light/bright/airy, and we liked it. The prices are high, even for a Disney restaurant. Which makes it an excellent choice on the dining plan - you get maximum Disney value for your meal credits here. Our lunch (2 adults) which was covered by the deluxe dining plan came to $79.88 with tax (but no tip in that figure) With adult beverages and taxes, the total came to $99.05 (no tip in that figure either.)

If you can take leftovers with you & safely store them, the value is better for sure - we enjoyed our 4 extra large leftover pieces as dinner the following evening...took it straight from restaurant to fridge in our Boardwalk room, then kept it on ice in our cooler while at Magic Kingdom & driving home the next day. Was great to just zap it in the micro the next day. Sure, the texture of the crust was chewier on the leftover, but still very tasty. One thing I noticed about the desserts at Via Napoli...they're pretty much all ice-cream or whipped-cream based so don't think any of them could be taken "to go". Wonder if they do that on purpose, knowing a fair number of people on the dining plan will just skip ordering dessert entirely since they won't be able to take leftover dessert with them?

Would I pay that kind of cash for that meal...well, probably not. I would maybe split an appetizer (something smaller than the Fritto Misto) and then split an individual pizza and dessert. But have to say they seriously discourage people from trying to split the small pizza, even when they're paying cash, so you might have to get pretty insistent to split an individual pizza.

Would I go back...on the dining plan, YES! In a flash. Loved the food. Would I recommend...yes! I'd give Via Napoli a 9 out of 10...taking away one point for the excessive price. If they dropped the prices, or called the "individual" size a "small" and encouraged two people to split that then I'd give it a 10. Bottom line...great food and great service.

OOOOO...so happy to be getting in early! My husband and I did DxDDP last February and did the two meals a day thing. We're actually doing it again this February with our three year old son...but don't worry...not bringing him to any signatures! :rotfl: OK, in the interest of full disclosure, we are going to Cali Grill, but I purposely made the ADR early. But the Yatchsman wouldn't be on my list of meals for a kid! I couldn't get over the number of kids who were our at signature restaurants well after eight p.m..

The more I hear about Via Napoli the more I can't wait to try it. The fritto misto you had, when done right, shouldn't be the least bit heavy, despite being fried. Happy to hear that it wasnt....and now I know what our appetizer is going to be! :lmao:

Enjoying your reviews!

Thanks! And really, I have no issues with kids in signature restaurants...as long as they're well behaved. And truth to tell, the baby was fine...barely a peep out of him. It was the mother who was annoying. Wish the baby would have taken her out in the hall until she settled down,

You and I are on the same page when it comes to Yachtsman. For one thing, we both love the bread service (and that wonderful roasted garlic! I'd eat all the bread as a vehicle for that stuff.) and liked everything else we ate....except the steak, no so much. (I call the Kona bread and macadamia butter "Kona Crack", so I think we're alike that way, as well.)

In my case, it was the "filet mignon" at $40, not a good value. I'd rather order up a bunch of appetizers (like your escargot!) and side dishes and have a meal of that. I ate mine at the Crew's Cup Lounge in December, and the only steak choices were the filet or the sirloin.

I really want to try Via Napoli. I'd want to share appetizers and a small pizza.

Cathy, loved your VN review! I cannot wait to eat there and that appie looks like something we would enjoy

What is it about roasted garlic that makes it so wonderful? What's really funny about this is I don't usually even like garlic, as a seasoning, that much. But roast that garlic to turn it into a spread & give me some nommy bread...can't scarf it up fast enough.

that is such a bummer that "steakhouse" can't get the steaks right, though! And so many "lesser" places DO serve good steaks. Sometimes I think these chefs spend so much time figuring out artistic presentations they forget the basics...like deliver GOOD food! I'd rather have tasty over artsy anyday.

Thanks,Nicki! While we were there, I couldn't help think about one of your previous reviews of Tutto, I think it was a lunch...you mentioned cute Italian waiters. Well, besides great food, you're in for a waiter-treat at Via Napoli, too:rotfl:

Great review of Via Napoli. I can't wait to try it in December!

I've been reading more and more reviews like yours about Yachtsman Steakhouse and I'm really glad I went with Flying Fish instead :lmao: I can't wait to hear what you thought of Flying Fish!

Cute waiters make the food taste better LOL

Hi Cathy! I can't wait for our La Cava meet....you seem to have good taste in food. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the Via Napoli review. Good to know the 'individual' pizzas can be shared. My grandma (who you will meet in Nov) and I have an ADR there and I was wondering about being able to share pizza there since she eats like a bird! I'm very excited about REAL pizza at Disney so I'm happy you were able to give it such a good review!

thanks for the great reviews. I love eating Escargot and so glad you posted the picture of it...we are trying Yatchman's for first time...sorry your main meal wasn't that great.
