Rumors swirl about comic’s primetime show, possible shake-up on NBC

NEW YORK - Although NBC shot down rumors Thursday that it would be canceling the low-rated “The Jay Leno Show,” unconfirmed reports indicate a lineup shuffle may be in the works that would keep Leno at the network, but not necessarily in the 10 p.m. time slot he’s held since September.

According to the speculation, “The Jay Leno Show” would go on hiatus beginning Feb. 1 and after the Winter Olympics the comic would return at the helm of “The Tonight Show” at 11:30, replacing Conan O’Brien.

“NBC executives said a decision would definitely not be announced Thursday but did not deny a report posted by the website TMZ that NBC was considering making the switch and replacing Mr. O’Brien at “Tonight” with Mr. Leno,” Bill Carter of the New York Times wrote on Thursday.

NBC did not respond to requests for comment on the reports. Earlier in the day, the network issued a statement showing support for Leno.

“Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today. As we have said all along, Jay’s show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network,” the statement read. “It has, however, presented some issues for our affiliates. Both Jay and the show are committed to working closely with them to find ways to improve the performance.”

FTVLive.com published a story early Thursday morning suggesting NBC would pull the plug on the show, potentially as soon as after the Winter Olympics, claiming that low ratings were to blame.

NBC Shakeup -- Jay Leno Comes Out on Top
Posted Jan 7th 2010 3:50PM by TMZ Staff

Jay Leno is going back to his 11:30 PM time slot, and it's looking like Conan O'Brien is the odd man out ... sources tell TMZ.
We've learned Jay's 10:00 PM show will go on hiatus February 1. After the Olympics, Jay will take back his 11:30 PM time slot. What has not been decided -- whether Jay's show will be a half hour, followed by Conan, or whether Jay's show will be an hour and NBC says sayonara to Mr. O'Brien.

We're told Jay and Conan have both been told of the changes. As for Jay, interestingly, he'll get what he always wanted -- his 11:30 PM time slot.

Good, if it's true. :thumbsup2

Jay should have never been moved out of his 11:30 time slot. It was the biggest blunder since New Coke was made as a replacement for regular Coca Cola. That also only lasted a few months. :p That was known as the BIGGEST advertizing blunder of ALL time.

:scratchin I wonder if this is why GE stock (who owns NBC) went up a full point today.

I'm glad. I'm tired of looking for something on TV any night of the week at 10 and seeing Jay Leno. He should go back to the Tonight Show, and Conan should go back to his New York show. The odd man out should be Jimmy Fallon, who is awful on his show.

What a mess this new Leno show made, I can't believe they actually thought it would fly for long.

Bummer. I love Conan. I think he's been doing a great job and for them to just push him out seems pretty unfair to me. Its not his fault Jay bombed.

Me too, phors'. Jay's new show has been failing (IMHO) for months now....all those tacky little comedy sketches, that "earn your plug" and the 10@10, silliness. Naa, I have loved Jay forever...but the 10pm show is so lacking. Really the only thing I find entertaining is the Race Car.

NBC built that whole new studio for Conan on the Universal Lot in Studio City. What is he suppose to do now, pack up and go back to NYC. :sad1:

I hope that doesn't happen. Jay Leno is the worst(slightly worse than Fallon) of the late night hosts. It's nice having Conan on earlier. Jay needs to pack up his chin and retire to Florida.

I agree I would prefer Conan over Jay..... but either way I'd be happy to have that 10:00 slot go back to regular TV shows!

Bring back ER & Las Vegas then I'd be real happy :thumbsup2 (Even though I know that will never happen)

i hope its not true, i love conan (though i am very rarely up to watch, its past my bedtime

I totally agree with this. I can't really take Leno. He's alright... But I really enjoy watching Conan and then Craig Ferguson (if I stay up that late). This will really mess me up. I guess it'll be back to Letterman, or the Soup and Chelsea Handler!

I think you are missing an important (possible) factor. I don't *think* Conan is winning in his time slot. Last I heard, Letterman is. :confused3 And that was before the news about Letterman having the affair(s.)

If Conan was bringing in the best ratings in his timeslot, he'd be bomb proof & immovable.

And what is wrong with NYC? Harumph!

(Just kidding.) :goodvibes

I agree. I love Leno and he should have never been made to leave for Conan.

I'd feel bad for Conan but not as bad as I would if Jay were to leave tv.

If I recall correctly, Jay signed his contract stating after 'x' amount of years he would leave. And it was expected the Conan would be his replacement.

In my opinion, Jay's new show is not tanking in ratings because of the time slot it is in. It's because of the material being written for it. I've tried watching many times and I feel like I'm watching the same stupid skits every show.
I just doesn't hold my attention.

Oops, that did NOT come out right....and I HEART NYC!! Yes, I do!! I just meant that here Conan moved his whole family and life out here along with his band and crew and now something like this happens before he is even here a year. :sad2:

As I post this I am listening to EMPIRE STATE OF MIND....love that song!!! "concrete jungle"!!!

That was part of the problem. Even back then, Jay was forced to sign the contract. NBC put pressure on him, so they could secure Conan's contract.

Jay was never ready to leave and retire. Those of us who stayed up to watch Johnny Carson's last show knew he was ready to retire. In fact' he was beyond ready because he was barely seen in public ever again.

Jay wasn't given that chance. He was literally fired from the Tonight Show. He is not ready to retire. The rumours at the time of his show ending were that FOX or one of the other cable shows were willing to offer him a show in the 11:30 time slot.

NBC only offered him the 10pm slot as a preemptive strike from him leaving to another channel and taking his loyal viewers over there and WINNING the timeslot he always had. Conan would have lost in the ratings anyway and NBC would have lost Jay.

The Jay Leno show is bringing the ratings that were expected, it's the local NBC affiliates that are barking as they are losing ratings for their 11 PM newscasts. Conan has also lost about 1/2 of Leno's 11:30 audience since he has taken over, Letterman is now the leader again.

I don't find Conan or Letterman funny.

I am so happy to hear this. There is just nothing on at 10 pm right now....but my DVR goes crazy from 8-10. Hopefully there can be some good shows developed for that time slot, although I will miss the RIP ER and Las Vegas!

From what I read Jay will do 11:30-12 and then Conan will have the hour from midnight-1pm.

...the guy AFTER Conan is WORSE....:sad2:

I don't watch Jay or Conan - but isn't Jay's show failing? is it because of him or the time slot?
