Black, who was 17 at the time, was sentenced to a total of 16 years in prison with all but four years suspended.
Court records show that Black was released from prison on Oct. 18, 1977, but was soon sent back to jail for violating probation. He was released again in April 1980.
On July 18, 1980, court records show, Black was arrested for driving in Spotsylvania after having been declared a habitual offender. He was sentenced to a year in prison in February 1981.
In March 1983, he was charged with the same crime. This time, Spotsylvania court records state, Black skipped his trial and was finally found in Maryland.
He was extradited back to Virginia and went to trial on Sept. 17, 1986, on the 1983 charge. Again he was convicted, this time getting three years in prison.
In November 2000, Black began serving a two-year prison sentence after shooting a girlfriend during a domestic dispute in Columbus, Ohio, according to court records. The victim survived and Black was paroled in 2002. He is on probation for that crime until October 2006
