As alot of you know I had to have my (best friend) dog put down last Tuesday. Wow I cannot believe it has been almost a week. Well anyway last Friday I got the mail and there was a white bubble envelope from the animal hospital. Very confused I opened it and immediately got very upset because I thought they had sent me Barneys ashes which I DID NOT want. Upon further inspection of the package I pulled out a ziplock baggie and inside wrapped in white tissue paper tied with a blue satin ribbon was a plaster impression of Barneys paw with his name engraved on it. It was a very very thoughtful and sweet thing to do but boy did it make me start crying.
The tears are not as frequent but that certainly does not mean that it does not hurt like hell still! I am at a point that I can actually think about him and smile rather than cry.
My other dog is going through a state of depression though.

My vet did something like that for me when I had to have my horse put down - he save a clipping from her mane for me.

Hang in there, it hurts, but it does get better....

Aw, I'm so sorry about your doggy. :( Very sweet gesture on the part of the vet though. I would have started crying too.

Maybe you can talk to the vet about how to help your other dog?

My thoughts are with you.

tmq2766, I can relate to the problem with your other dog. My Griffin misses Scout a great deal. He follows me from room to room. He won't let me out of his sight. The minute I sit down, he is next to me with his head in my lap.

I hope your puppy recovers from his loss soon.

My Mom and Dad's vet does the same for them. The first time was when we put our cat, Cali, down, and boy did we all cry. When they sent the paw prints of their two dogs who died within months of each other, my Mom did not even open them, just packed them away with all their dog stuff.

I just wanted to let you know I know what you are going thru. We had to have Sam put down about a month ago. We cried for a week straight and I still tear up when I think of him....or expect him to be waiting for me etc.

That is so special what your vet did. After Sam was gone, I told my husband I wished I had taken some of my polymer clay and done that very thing with his paw imprint. That is wonderful you have it. Our vet was sweet and sent a sympathy card signed by the whole office. Sam was "famous" because of all his visits and "issues". The vet and vet tech cried with us when we had him put down.

I can tell you it does get easier, but you will still miss him. And it's okay to cry! We have done a ton of it ourselves!

That's very sweet what your vet did. I had my Sammi put down just 11 days ago. My vet sent a symphathy card. This is such a hard time. Toby is getting a little better each day without her.

I wish our Vet had of done something like that. At the time, I didn't even think of doing something like that ourselves before he was put down. I'm guessing that is why the Vet does it for his clients.

Our Briar is buried in the backyard, and I say hi to him everytime I'm in that area of the yard.

Hang in there, it will get easier to think of him without shedding a tear.

What a nice and thoughtful vet you have. When we had our previous westie put to sleep, she made a donation in Spunky's name to Tufts veterinary hospital. It is hard to lose a pet. Think of all the good times you had with him. I hope your other dog does better soon.

What a lovely gesture on the Vet! I think I will have to go and get my Jade's paw print done soon...she was diagnosed with lymphoma recently, and only has a couple weeks left!

 I am sorry for the loss of your pal! It is never easy to say good-bye to a furry family member!

Wow. You have a very thoughtful/compassionate vet!!
That is wonderful he thought of doing that to his patients.

I had to put my dog down 10 years ago & I still remember the day. I think I cried everyday for at least a week.
Even now there is an empty part in my heart just for him, but now when I think of him I think of the happy times we shared or the silly things he did.

The hurt never really goes away, it just gets easier to handle.

BIG HUGS
