So, I found this cute little young dog - very very nice. Have no idea where his home is. Problem is, he has fleas. I can't bring him inside our house and everything is closed until Monday (animal control/rescues/vets/etc)! Think it's okay if DH puts him in the bed of his truck w/ water and a little food for the night? It's cold here - in MI. But, he would be spending the night outside anyway and he is going to get hit by a car!! Any ideas!?!

Update - 'Buddy' is back home. Craigslist came through!!!

Do you have dogs yourself? Maybe have some extra flea treatment. Waltmart is always open some good flea shampoo will work for a few days just don't but the cheap collars or flea treatments. Good luck.

Our garage is packed. DH has a truck cover and an old blanket in there. We have 2 cats and I definitely don't want them getting fleas! I just gave them the otc flea preventative but am still a little nervous! I wish we had a fenced in yard!

Can't help with your specific situation.

I just wanted to say - THANK YOU FOR CARING!!!!:thumbsup2

I'm not sure I would keep water in the truck bed overnight - as if it spills - any blankets that would be in the truck to help keep the dog warm would get wet, and then not serve the intended purpose of keeping the dog warm.

I would put enough old blankets in the truck bed, so the dog could "make a nest" with them, and help to keep him warm.

Again - thank you for caring!!!

The truck is better than in the streets....

Here's who you could be contacting (even though most are closed you can at least leave your info, along with the dog's description)

Your local law enforcement/police agency. Many times when a pet is found the finder will contact the police to see if anyone has reported it missing. If they have not had a report of your pet being found please make sure they take your name, phone number and a description of your pet in case someone calls after you have made contact.

Berrien County Animal Control at 269-471-7531. If Animal Control is closed and they have an answering machine leave a message with your information and a description of your pet.

Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan at 269-927-3303. Leave a message on the answering machine if they are closed. You can also email them a picture at: hssmnews at sbcglobal dot net.

Animal Aid of Southwestern Michigan at 269-934-7729. You will receive a recording which will provide you with the current lost and found volunteer. Contact this volunteer and provide them with information about your missing pet.

:goodvibes

Dawn dish soap will kill fleas. A small comb will help too.

Do you have a room that doesn't have carpets like a laundry room or bathroom?

I would put him on your local Craigslist Pets and Lost and Found in case someone is looking for him.

It was nice of you to take him in!

Good Luck!

Can you cover a corner of the truckbed so that there is something over his head? I would think that dew or just open to the night air would be a bit rough. If he were loose, he'd probably get under a car or a bush or something, so I would try to put some "roof" over his head.

Do you have a crate/kennel to put him in?

Yes - DH has a tonneau cover on his truck, so he left that open just a little bit, but not enough so he can jump out.

Honestly your whole house isn't going to get a flea infestation over night. If your not willing to bath him then put him in laundry room or a bathroom. Just be sure to vacum really well in the morning. Its really cold in MI right now and depending on how big he is he may not be able to keep warm outside. It would be worse to find him dead in the truck then have to give him a bath or clean a room.

I'd also try calling your city hotline if there is an animal shelter or animal control they can contact them for you.

if you could get hold of a crate or kennel, you could get him quite comfortable in the garage. Its worlds better than running loose on the street, and you would have some control of his environment

If the temp is below 50 outside a smaller dog might not make it the night. Do you have any dawn dish soap?? I would bath him with that (it kills adult fleas) and then keep him locked in an uncarpeted laundry room or bathroom til morning.

Any local animal rescues near you that you can try to call? Sometimes they use their cell phones as their main number so you might be able to get through. Also do you have any emergency vet hospitals? The ones around me are open 24/7 and would take in a stray.

Dang it, now I'm worried about the little fellow. Please let us know how it goes.

Do you have any handwarmers--the open-and-shake kind? but he might try to bite them and I don't know if they're poisonous....ummm, is there any way to put a light out there that might put off some heat? How cold is it supposed to get tonight up there?

I think that if you carried him into the house and straight into the bath for a good shampoo you would have nothing to worry about with the fleas. We have needed to do this with our dog when returning from a vacation home where she always seemt to picks up flea and it works every time.

I forgot too say Well Done for not Walking Away, hope everything turns out well for this little one. 

put him in a crate in a covered truck, etc with tons of hay or fleece blankets to snuggle up in, it'll be far better than just wandering another night, and he'll stay warm enough all burrowed in... hay on blankets in a box? something to dig into, like dogs do.....

HAPPY NEWS! "Buddy" is back at his home. Thank goodness for Craigslist! They picked him up about an hour ago..

You should feel good over the fact that you saved someone some possible heartbreak. I can just imagine how happy they were that someone had been a Good Samaritan and took "Buddy" in for the cold night--our own little Christmas story!

A happy ending...YEAH!
