Update from DCL

I dont think anyone has said things of this nature to be dismissive or callous. That's just a benchmark that's being said so people can asses their personal risks. Now a fair argument is if this is an accurate statement. In some ways this does seem to be acting like a cold/ flu. But there are also several important differences IMO. That's why this statement is harmful, not because it may be taken as dismissive of our elderly and compromised population.

I say this an someone that is immuno compromised. It never occurred to me to be offended for any reason other than the inaccuracies.

I think, like with many things, there are kinder ways to phrase it than what some are phrasing it as.

....

One couple in our group chat are strongly considering cancelling their cruise. That would result in taking a huge financial hit and from my limited understanding of their situation it's a hit they definitely can't afford. They're both young and healthy, so let's assume they do contract coronavirus, realistically it would likely be a mild case. Of course no one can promise anything with this outbreak, and everyone needs to make decisions they're comfortable with at an individual level. I just hate to see people making decisions based on fear, especially when that fear doesn't seem to match reality.

More of a concern than getting it is getting caught in a quarantine scenario, this could happen with anyone on the ship getting sick, then there is a high risk you will be quarantined in your cabin or away from home for 2+ weeks at a minimum, I imagine that would put a financial and life strain on most people.

Not to mention, if you've only put enough medication in your daily pill minder for the original trip length, you could have a problem.

And on the other side of it, if you have a medication that is restricted (can only buy so much a month), then just travelling with extra could be impossible. And even if you do get enough, how do you tell the border guard that's searching you and finds your pain meds or ADHD meds or anything else that you're just bringing enough in case you get quarantined? It just sounds like grounds to be denied entry into the country in the first place.

True, and that possibility has been discussed in our chat as well. I was just trying to keep my post here limited to the discussion at hand.

The thing is, the couple I mentioned weren't even considering that until we started discussing as a group. They were just freaked out by the news reports and were afraid of getting the virus and dying.

Like I said before, everyone needs to make decisions they're comfortable with on a personal level.
My caveat is those decisions should be based on the most accurate info available in the moment, not just on fear and the immediate reaction to it.

When this becomes widespread the two week quarantines will be pointless.

Ooooh yeah.. April Cruisers! (Got my email a bit ago as well)

that maybe true, but they most likely will still have them, China still has them months after it first appeared and it is widespread there.

I mean widespread as in in every country. We’re not China.

Just how exactly do you go about making sure you have an extra 30 days of medications as the Red Cross is now recommending. I only have the option of refilling maintenance meds via 3 month mail in per my insurance. And CVS Caremark cant even get it together enough to account for weekends/ holidays. The way my RX fell this year it was due to be filled on Christmas Eve. It didnt get filled until after the New Year due to holidays and backlogs. Which meant I was paying $250 for this RX because it came in 2020 rather than 2019 when it would have been $0 due to my deductible being met for the year. Not to mention that they burned almost 2 weeks of lead time I had built up to counteract vacations and there usual vacation/ weekend issues. Oh, and if I had needed the drugs I would have been screwed unless I wanted to buy locally and not going through insurance.

So, I ask again, just how are people supposed to get a 30 day emergency backup supply of meds? Seriously, do other insurances allow this? Is there a magic phrase I should be using with the insurance company?

FigmentSpark-rant not aimed at you, just got angry as I was typing! LOL

When I order refills, I can get a 100 day supply. I typically order a couple of weeks early, so I've got a small backlog already. If I'm taking a trip that would require a refill during the time I'm not home to do so, I'll talk to my doctor and pharmacy about getting an extra refill. It's usually OK.

When I was able to use a local pharmacy they could do the vacation thing for me but since my husband switched jobs and the only meds option is CVS Caremark via 90 mail order there is NO flexibility. Like I said, they wont even refill a day early so that it wont be late due to weekends/ holidays. There is no option to request a med before it is due to be filled. The doctor would gladly write the RX but Id be paying OOP.

So healthcare workers can’t cruise? Are they going to start asking for your tax returns to verify your employment status. There’s no way to enforce this. I think is more of a CYA thing for DCL.
All they have to do is run your name though a service such as Lexi Nexi or Clear and it will list all of your employment history. That is what we use at my company to preform background checks on people. Or simply look at LinkedIn for the info.
