Update from DCL

Just to give further updates after the last 4 hours on the phone with the airlines, Travelocity (never got through to them after an hour on hold) and DCL. DCL is being the most helpful, accessible and professional with answers. I have not officially received a mail from DCL yet and I found out why. The letters that have been sent out about restricted boarding only apply until the end of March. My cruise being April 20th has not been canceled for me yet. Now I have no hope that it won't roll over to April.... I am realistic about that. I do hope the information I can provide will help others as we all sit and wait with FE gifts packed and prepared, knowing that things aren't looking good.

The good news for me anyway is that I will be eligible for a voucher in the amount I have invested to this point for a future Disney Cruise if I'm not allowed to cruise. That will be determined by Disney in the next few weeks. The sooner the better for me, one way or another. This actually could mean a bigger, better, longer cruise. Wooohooo... sorry need a little smile.
The bad news is the Travel Company and airlines aren't being as cooperative.
I hope you get to go on your cruise or an even better one. Sorry you are dealing with all of this.

I'm so sorry this is all happening to you. This must be so stressful… and vacations shouldn't be!

At least I am relieved that DCL seems to be taking the situation and emitting vouchers for future cruises for those guests that cannot board. It will probably help everyone being honest, and while I understand this might cost them a whole lot of money, it is the sensible thing to do.

I expected as this went on that the travel companies, airlines, and insurance companies would be less cooperative and more resistant to reimbursement; nit picking claims. IF you can get them in the phone at all.

I am so glad you have a more positive attitude this morning. I read your post last night and felt really terrible for your situation. I’ve tried throughout this “incident” to be the consummate Polyanna, positive for the future, glad for what I have, but I don’t know that if I were in your position I would have had the immediate ability to conference DCL. Rather, I would have been rage cleaning my house until my fingers bled. Honestly, your calm measured responses and ability to contain your negative feelings, in an effort to solve and control the little bit of this situation you can, is an example to us all.

I am hopeful for you and I am grateful to you for sharing what you learned from DCL. The biggest challenge and largest fear driver for people is the unknown. You have taken away some of that uncertainty for folks and, even though the answers you received weren’t definitive, by posting them you have resolved some of that. Be glad that your information helped someone today who may not ever post in reply.

Good luck Tokyodad!

That makes sense--I don't think we can possibly predict at this stage what travel restrictions may exist at April 20. We can only plan a couple of weeks into the future. For example, even Tokyo Disneyland is only scheduled to be closed until March 15 (might be extended, might not--we'll see what happens in two weeks). It may be that the warmer weather wipes out the virus in the northern hemisphere by then. It may be it is a huge epidemic and all cruises in April will be cancelled. No point in speculating--we just have to wait and see.

My cruise isn’t for 5 months so I can only think of hypotheticals.
The situation is more than likely to change before then. That’s why you can’t really apply the current DCL restrictions to what-if scenarios several months down the road.
  • IF the status quo continues - with relatively few cases in the US - DCL’s restrictions will probably remain in place. But that also means you aren’t highly likely to be exposed to a patient.
  • IF this thing progresses and community exposure in the US becomes widespread, I expect both hospital and DCL protocols will change. Focus will be on treatment not prevention. There will be little or no reason to restrict healthcare workers specifically, since most everyone may already be exposed in the general public.

I've read rumors/news on twtr that the US govt is considering closing the border with Mexico if more CV cases pop up... would that impact ports of call DCL (and other ships) in MX?
If so, that'd be totally devastating to the industry and I think it'll trigger massive cancelations.

Just heard on another site that AA and Delta discontinued flights to Italy until April 25.

Delta just says Milan flights are cancelled (though change fees are waived for all of Italy)

On March 1, we announced a temporary suspension of our daily flight between New York – John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) effective following Monday, March 2 on our east-bound flight from the U.S. to Milan, and Tuesday, March 3 on west-bound service departing Milan for the U.S. Service to and from Milan will resume starting on May 1 and May 2, respectively.

Not sure about AA as all I can find (with a quick look) is information waived fees.

Best be safe. Glad our country is overly protective

Why would they close the border with Mexico? Doesn't Mexico have less cases than the US does?

There have only been 3 cases there so far.

hi tokyodisneydad! it's been a long time since we've 'talked'.
Which airline are you having trouble with?
The airline i use is offering relatively generous terms for people who cancel.
Obviously, for flights that the airline is cancelling, they offer full refunds (e.g. china, hong kong, japan, thailand, singapore, korea, italy).

But they're also offering refunds on flights to all destinations in Europe (not just italy, where they've cancelled all flights).
For anyone who has a flight in March to anywhere in Europe, the airline is offering a 100% refund if the person decides they don't want to fly.
And to other destinations anywhere in the world, customers can change their flight dates free of charge, so they can postpone their flights for a later date. And if they don't have a specific date, they can freeze the ticket until they do.

The point of this is, call your airline and say there are other airlines out there offering options.
Your flight isn't until April, so i guess you have to wait.
My airline also is only offering the above for March as of now. But if things continue as they are, i'm sure they'll extend it into April.

Canada has at least 20 cases...funny how they never talk about closing the border to Canada.

Anyways, I’m interested to see what happens with my cruise out of San Diego in April. By then it will likely be circulating widely in CA. I just hope they don’t cancel as I am looking forward to this cruise (I picked a great time to try concierge for the first and probably last time!)
