My wife and I kind of shy away from that because we don't want to take advantage of things and understand there are others in much greater need (we count our blessings).

Please don’t feel like you’re taking advantage of anything. Getting the “stroller as a wheelchair” designation and/or using the DAS pass won’t take anything away from anyone else, but it will allow your son to enjoy this trip as much as possible.

I was told based on my son's limitations and his age we will most likely be given that DAS pass and for each ride given a return time based on the current wait time to return and ride.

Based on what you have stated in this thread, a DAS is unlikely. Phone CMs are notoriously wrong, unfortunately. I suggest you ask for a stroller-as-wheelchair tag. It will allow you to bring the stroller into queues, right up to boarding for many if that is needed. I would not plan on DAS unless he has other issues besides the leg.

Either bring a stroller from home or rent from off-site. Off-site rentals are less expensive than in-park rentals, plus you’ll have to get to/from transportation and around the resort. He will need to transfer to a seat on the bus and fold the stroller, but you should be able to push him on through the wheelchair loading if he is too heavy to carry and can’t walk on.

From recent-ish personal experience...
We went with a 9yo with a broken leg for a 10 day trip. She had a cast on for about 5 months, and the cast was on during the trip in August. I don’t know what luck you will have getting a DAS card - like you, I heard mixed feedback with some saying that you would be able to procure one and others saying it wouldn’t work out. We didn’t bother to try. Instead, the doctor authorized a wheelchair through our insurance company so it was of no cost to us. It was small and mostly comfortable. She could transfer using her crutches, but it wasn’t easy. Many rides we went to a designated space for loading people with mobility problems and waited for our turn to be loaded. I would say that we frequently waited less than the stated wait times and for some rides, they would send us to fast pass for a return time anyway.
As an aside, having her be in a wheelchair made people be a little kinder about our mobility issues and people gave us more space. When my kids were smaller, I sometimes found that people would make comments about older (4/5yo) children in strollers.
I was worried at first, but the vacation was great and I don’t think we missed out on much because of it. In fact, she often felt really special because cast members went out of their way to assist.

Doctor said he can go to Disney but should not be expected to walk for any sustained period of time. He was the one who gave us a note to give to the people in charge there to accommodate us in regards to lines. Getting a stroller as a wheelchair tag isn't taking advantages of things! Your son will have a boot on his foot - everyone can see that and will understand it! So - really - be sure to do that.

I can't comment about DAS because I've never read up on it or used it - but I suspect you might not qualify for that given that I've regularly seen stroller as wheelchair tags.

the Doctor will not be looked at. plus I would not count on anything phone CM said about DAS for him. for sure ask for the Stroller as a Wheelchair tag as your son is why that tag is used and that is the only way you will be able to take stroller in line or in buildings where strollers are not usually allowed

Another recommendation fir renting a stroller offsite. The City Mini GT is what I’d recommend as it’s great for talker kids and higher weights. When my DD was 5 I could easily push it with one hand shone I watched my brother struggle with their normal stroller.
