Up grading seats on plane

I just booked our trip from Chicago to Barcelona I just took the free seats but I thinking of up grading. How do I do this. Can I do this on line or do I call the airline.

You may need to call. Usually if you book coach, only that cabin options are available (ie preferred seats, etc). Some allow you to do it all online.

Which airline are you flying? And when you say 'free seats' - do you mean that you have redeemed airline miles to secure a flight? Or are you talking about something else?

Based on the OP's other threads, it sounds like she has revenue (i.e. cash/non-point seats) and choose seats that were free to select. It's been a while since I've flown on Delta (and I've got enough status that things are different), but I'm pretty sure that there is an option online for changing your seats and you can choose Preferred or Comfort Plus and pay whatever the fee is.

I know that United offers the option to upgrade to Business class (on International flights) either for cash (paying the difference between what you paid and what a business class seat costs now) or for points and cash (amount depends on your fare class). I automatically get Economy Plus for free due to status, but I think that the upgrade to Economy Plus is available for cash.

OP: It depends on your airline and what exactly you want to do.

It sounds like you are in a basic economy seat (no fee was needed to select your seat). Depending on your airline/fare type, you may be able to upgrade to a preferred location seat or to a more-room seat. Whether you can do that before checkin time (24 hr before the flight) depends on the airline. The preferred location seat is more likely since you could probably select that when you bought your ticket but choose not to pay the fee to do so. The more-room seats are usually a booking class of their own and upgrading to them takes place for a fee when you check in, if there are any available.

Your airline website should explain these options. If not, call them or send them a facebook/twitter message and ask.

For an international flight, it's going to cost you. It would help if we knew the airline.

You should be able to go in online and change your seats. It will prompt you for payment if you've selected an upgraded area.

In the past, I had luck waiting until 24 hours prior to the flight, when checking-in, and scrolling to see if there is an upgrade offer.

Thanks for the helpful replies. Sorry about all the questions both with the flights and cruise. You'd like this was my first ever trip. Lol. For some reason this cruise was confusing to put together. And actually 5 years in the making. I had cancer 5 years ago and we said after my 5 years of follow ups if nothing more came up we'd go on a special trip. So here we are 5 years later and I just got the great news last month. You are now cancer free. So I guess I just want this trip to be extra special. Oh also we are on American Airlines. We are flying Delta to Paris this summer. I upgraded to Extra Comfort on the Delta website after my initial purchase. I believe it cost me an extra $110 per seat.

Not all ticket classes can be upgraded. The bare-bones basic economy on certain airlines have severe restrictions including the no-upgrade even for payment. Op should go to the AA website, view her reservation, and see if there is an option to upgrade. This is a faster option than calling and she will be able to see available seats and locations.

just got an email back from american--it starts out by saying sometimes customers have problems getting seats due to othr customers have them or they are reserved by the airlines for unexpected seating issues the day of--but to keep checking cause seats become available at any time

so by this Im guessing that as long as there are up graded seats open I can pay for the upgrade and change

hopefully this will be the last of my questions --like I said before Ive booked a lot of trips and for some reason I was having a hard time getting everything together dont know why --but I was able to book all the port adventures we wanted--so at least were all set there
