Years ago I rode up front of the monorail at WDW, and now want to share it with my family. I heard it was still possible in Disneyland, but is that still true with the new designed monorails? I want to make sure what I read wasn't out dated.

Yes you can!!! Ask the conductor on the platform. When we rode the max was 5 passengers plus the engineer

Just in case you don't know this, I thought I should mention that you can also ride in the very back of the monorail if you ask and there's room. Both experiences are lots of fun! :goodvibes

If I remember correctly there was a bench that curved around so multiple people could sit down. The window wraps around as well. I actually preferred the back more because I felt like there was more space and I liked the view better, but more people probably prefer the front. I would say try the back at least once! :thumbsup2

if you get in the front at the tomorrow land station, you can do a full circuit or get off at downtown disney. If you catch a ride in the front at downtown disney, you must get off at tomorrow land. It is quite popular and we found it tricky. Someone was always there before us but it came to our last day and my ds was desperate so we waited for the people in front of us to have there turn and then we were next, we were at the downdisney station. We were about to get on but the middle age couple did the full circuit. I know they have the right to do this but they were like 50 or so and it would have been nice if they'd just done their one way trip and then made way for a child. So we waited again and hoped the next person wouldn't be doing a full circuit. The next couple, in their 60's were also doing the full circuit, we decided to hop on anyway but split up our group, I don't think the couple were happy about that. We got on but as we have 4 children we couldn't all do the trip so dh decided to wait with the other kids to try to get on next which he couldn't as someone else was doing the full circuit, so he waited again and Finally, all our kids had a ride.

Oh, and when we were pulling in around the matterhorn, the parade was going on beneath us, it was kinda magical to see. Kinda like a dream. :) I'm glad we went to the trouble to do it.

You kind of have to be first in line for the monorail in order to ride up in front (I tried three times my last trip and never got it)
It is 4 pasangers only and small kids (even babies) count as one of the four. (so the family in front of me was told)
Usually the back they only open up if they need room and it is a curbed bench with a nice view I have no idea what the passenger limit is in the back

If you had waited in TL you could have done the full circuit, that's the perk you get for asking when you are in TL. :) I'm 40 and I love to ride in the front, age makes no difference at DL.

Well, no, you don't have to be first in line, you just have to be willing to wait. :)

OP ask at TL, then you can chose to do the full circuit or get out in DTD. And yes, ride in the back too, the back is rarely full (we've never been turned away from riding it) and the view is still pretty amazing. :)

My family rode in the front at end of Nov, 2011. They only let 4 people ride it at one time. It was amazing!!!! It is a totally different ride from up there!!! We had to wait only one train. Going to try again next trip! :thumbsup2

This is a huge difference (for me) between DLR & WDW. At WDW, the monorail is essentially transportation, while at DLR it is essentially a ride.

How many people would fit in the back nosecone of the monorail? I think we did this years ago but it would have only been 3 people that trip; now we're up to 6!

I'm sure your group of 6 will fit with no problems. We had 4 in our group and we had plenty of space to spread out.

Awesome! My two youngest are still little. Sounds like the back is a great choice if it is easier to get than the front.

Being the impatient types, we opted to ride in the back during our last visit.
Just as much fun as being in the front, as far as we were concerned. Not many people know that it is available, so there was no line.
I will say that the deep blue windows add a special "magic" to all of your pictures.
ETA - you will also be alone back there. I don't know if there is a hidden camera monitoring your activities, but if you're the bold type, no kids, and it's dark - who knows what kind of mischief you can get into?

With the last monorails there was a max. outside temp. If it was too hot outside no one but the driver 'cooked'.

We took our kids to DL for the first time in 2010 and we got to ride in the tail end of the monorail. We got on in Downtown Disney, they opened it up just like the rest. While everyone got in line as close to the front as possible, we got in line at the very last gate and got on no problem. Two adults, three kids & a stroller and still plenty of room! Kids loved it :thumbsup2

(apparently, I need more posts in order to share a pic, just remove the spaces ;))

I just decided today to plan a trip for May and immediately came to this board :woohoo:

That happened one time when we asked, they said it was too hot. I'm surprised they are not air conditioned.

At WDW, the front and back are the same so that they can be driven on either end. Not sure about DL.
