Unwanted critters in your tent/camper...

I'm a northern girl who loves to camp...but is terrified of pretty much all animals (except Bambi). Just tonight while sitting on my front porch I convinced myself a fox was running towards me, jumped up on my chair screaming, only to have my husband inform me it's a baby rabbit. Needless to say I've invisioned snakes, frogs, lizards, scorpions and spiders finding a way into my popup. Anyone ever have an unwanted visitor inside their camper or tent while at the fort?

Lol, Fingers crossed all answers are NO! Being from the North "southern nature" is just so foreign to me.

Oh god and I don't even want to see a palmetto bug. I'd like to thank my husband for letting me know they are actually cockroaches. Thanks baby

I am terrified of frogs to the point that I don't actually understand how I camp in Florida. I can assure you that I've never had one in my popup as I don't think I could ever camp in it again if it did happen.

As for other bugs, make sure you shut your door all the time and try and seal any gaps in the canvas. Our popup has gaps where the lift arms are so we stuff them with a tshirt or towel. At night, make sure to empty your garbage to avoid a raccoon or possum visit (as one did last night). We also have roach traps in the cabinets and I spray the axles with bug spray. The Fort is a lot more civilized and "urban" than he campground I'm at now and I've found that critters are greatly reduced.

Good luck! I feel your pain:).

Roach traps in the cabinets. Oh no! Lol, we don't have roaches wandering around outside in the North. I've never even seen one except in Disney. I will definitely buy some bug spray and roach traps! Thank you.

We camp in a tent and have never had any problems with snakes or lizards. Just remember to close everything up nice and tight and you should be fine. There is the occasional turkeys that wonder through the campsites. Plenty of deer, rabbits and armadillos also.

Thank you, good to know

The main concern would be the squirrels (and raccoons). The squirrels have lost all fear of humans at the Fort and aggressively go after human food. We have noticed over the years that they have become so aggressive that it is really "not cute" anymore. We have seen them literally tear a campsite to pieces in search of food.

That would be the camper's fault for not setting up a proper offering.

Been telling you people for years, eventually you will listen...or pay the price.

By the way, be considerate of the little guys' health. Unsalted peanuts are better for them. They do like corn, but with a little cereal, such as Froot Loops, goes a long way.

We stayed at the Fort twice with our popup- 10 days each time - and no critter problems. Like everyone else said, keep the door closed, try to close up gaps, and have some bug killer around. We had turkeys wander through our site, had ducks once, and lots of the little lizards - but nothing inside at all.

Sorry, I don't agree with this! Hate the little buggers what they do to our place - even chew through wiring, metal bird feeders, canvas, anything they can get their teeth on. Not apologetic at all!! :headache: :duck:

Survival of the fittest, in this case the more adaptable. I solved the problem of decimated bird feeders by instead using a flat surface and spreading the feed out.

They all get along nicely, and the cats are overjoyed as well. Of course, so are the Hawks and the owls for that matter, unless the cats are there at the same time. In these cases, the birds and squirrels have a good show to watch.

This is because the squirrels usually take care of them.
Michael lets be honest. They are Mickey Slickey Takey not Riki Tiki Tavi the mongoose in R. Kiplings poem. You might also want to OP know that you are the supreme Leader of the NSS whose loyal minions do your nefarious bidding stealing you tasty snacks and munchies. Admitting to being the founding member of Grey Lives Matter would only be a plus

Fort Wilderness isn't very "wilderness." I doubt you see anything inside your camper.

Lot of cute little tree frogs and lizards around, but they don't want to come inside your tent or camper.

When I moved to FL from WV, my biggest fear was cockroaches and palmetto bugs. I've been 9 years now, and have never seen any inside my home, even though we live out in the middle of the woods. We do have palmetto bugs in our shed, but I'm much less freaked out by them than regular cockroaches (much to my own surprise.) They are easy to spot and not that fast, so less effort to kill - if you have the intestinal fortitude to squish anything that large.

Oh, back to the Fort - you have nothing to worry about. :flower1: Have a great time!

1) Must have been SOME baby rabbit!
2) As mentioned above, just keep everything sealed and you should be fine.
3) The biggest pests are squirrels, who have no fear of people or picnic baskets.

You just want them to have the healthy diet so they can be easily indoctrinated into the NSS! :squirrel:

Yep...the squirrels also seem to invade EVERY thread.....:teeth::sad2::rotfl:
