No kids of my own yet, but I've been a child care provider since I was in college, and I've had some funny kids with quirky interests, but the one that tops them all is the little boy I called "my trash child". This little boy, Z., was completely fascinated with all things related to trash. Trash cans, trash trucks, dumpsters, recycling, etc....
Other kids go to the park to play on the swings or the slide, Z. went to the park to find things to put in the "big green dumpster". His hero was the garbage men, his favorite TV character was of course Oscar the Grouch who lived in a trash can and was carried around by a trash man. His favorite game was pretending he was the trash collector by walking around the house and putting things in one of his dozen assorted trash cans and then dumping the contents into the papasan chair and pretending we were "grinding up the trash in the trash truck".
Every Wednesday afternoon, rain or shine, freezing or roasting, I would pick him up and we would walk around the neighborhood, find the garbage truck, and follow it for a couple hours, much to Z.'s complete delight. He was such a funny, quirky kid! I have a million stories about Z., my little trash child. Of course, he's in high school now and would be horrified to hear any of them...
