Unusual spelling of names?

The worst was a woman I knew names Lisa, it was spelled Leeca, I thought it was pronounced Leak-a at first!

Whem I was in high school, I babysat for the most adorable little pudge of a toddler, I just loved him. His mom's name was pronounced "Lisa" but spelled L-e-i-s-a. She gave him a normal name, he was Eli.

We could start on different pronunciations too, even of last names.

I used to do a lot of announcing of Little League tournaments.......I had a kid on each team with the last name Garcia.
I ALWAYS check with parents in the stands to check pronunciations.......one kid pronounced it GAR-SEE-AH. The other GAR-SHA. Best part, they were cousins, their dads were brothers. Love to know the story there.

And President Carter's Chief of Staff....Hamilton Jordan........pronounced his last name Jur-dan nor Jor-dan......which I hear is not uncommong in the south.

Lived in the south most of my life and I've never heard Jordan pronounced Jur-dan. Course we have to remember Carter was a nukear ( his pronunciation, not mine)physicist.

When a relative was baptized back in the 1940s, the minister asked the godmother the child's name. She said, the child's first name. The minister then said, "And" and the godmother said, "And Cecilia.". The woman's baptismal certificate shows her name as her first name, then, Anne Cecilia.

OP again, I just had to go take a list of my students that I have this year and this is what I came up with.

For high school students, they seem all "normal" the only different one I see if Rena (pronounced Ree-na) Never heard of that one before but it's not that "odd".

For elementary school students I have a.....

***-fon-dee-ar)
Kaleb & Kameren (twin boys)
Payton (girl) & her brother Talan
Kaylee & Karissa (twin girls)

For my Kindergarten students I have a.....

Samragyi (not sure of the nationality of this) but the little ones have a hard time with her name so when she gets off the bus, the all yell, "Bye Samauri-agi" It's pronounced (Sam-rog-gee)

Ayden
Cody & Codee

I've noticed in this day & age, parents tend to spell a lot with a Y instead of an I.

That's actually the Irish spelling of it. Not a new cre8ive way.

Interesting. But in this case the parents didn't know that. They really did say that they were trying to be creative and make it different:confused3

Ugh, all of these made up names and spellings are making my head hurt. I have no problem with ethnic names. Micheal and Eoin are legitimate Irish names, for example, and I think those names are nice for kids of Irish heritage. We know a Niamh (a legitimate Irish name pronounced as Neeve) and it's appropriate because her mother was born and raised in Ireland. It would be odd though to see that name on a child not of Irish descent.

I agree with those who said that a lot of parents just can't spell. We know a Maranda. Her parents admit that they didn't realize the name was actually spelled Miranda. It kind of blows my mind that parents can like the sound of a name enough to give it to their child but not know how it is spelled. I also know a child named Navaeh. Her parents will tell you her name is heaven spelled backwards. Uhm, sure. Heaven spelled backwards is Nevaeh. Aside from the fact that the name is completely made up, they spelled it wrong if they were going for heaven spelled backwards. :crazy2:

Edited to add that I have two children with a big age difference between them. My oldest daughter is now a freshman in college and not many of her peers in school had made up names and only a few had creatively spelled names. My other daughter is in Kindergarten. Her class is about evenly split on girls names - those with classic or old-fashioned names (Isabel, Amelia, Sophia, etc.) and those with creative names, either in spelling or the name itself (Talyn, Kassidy, Kailyn, etc.). The boys seem to tend towards more traditional names but there are a lot of names ending in -ayden! I think it's interesting how much the names have changed over the years between my two girls.

In our family we have a Karley but at least you can figure that out.

My sister's name is Kaureen sounds like Maureen just with a K. Except family everyone still pronounces it wrong so she just started going by Reniee and they get that right lol.

My name is Rachel but you would not believe how many people I have to spell it for they all want to add the a.

I wanted a non top 100 name for DD but not uncommon so we wouldn't have issues and people still want to call her Annabella her name is Annabelle is that unusual or hard?
We do have friends that named their daughter Raychel (I'm not even sure that's right lol)

Talking about Birth Certificate mistakes my middle name was supposed to be Lizabeth and my Dad added an E so they just left it and now I'm Elizabeth.

Yep, it's just too much to ask.
My name is Susan. I think Jane might be the only female name more easily recognized and pronounced than Susan.
I still get called Suzanne and Susannah. :confused3 There is just no explaining it.

My daughter is Emily. She has four other Emily's in her grade, three spelled her way, one spelled Amelie (but pronounced like all the rest).
By far the most unique names I've come across personally were Eykis (i-kiss) and Glycerine (glis-er-een).

Wait. Whoa. Back up. Hold the phone. Hang on.

Glycerine? Like... glycerine?

You know someone, personally, who was named or named their child Glycerine? No... I refuse to believe this is true. Sorta.

Really? Glycerine?! And his/her brother Lye? And their sister Ethanol? And...

My experience in the south is limited..........some of the most amazing food I have ever eaten......most of it fried..........then there is Sweet Tea........that one I will NEVER understand. Diabetes in a glass.

Between my work (where I see most) and my hobby, I come across some absolutely unbelievable names. Yesterday at work I saw a Kyvin. Though I can't say I even remotely like it, I hope it's pronounced k-eye-vin and not kiv-in. ((shudder))

Some that I've seen recently:

Devine Nunnery (Nunnery being the surname)
Harvard Yale (Yale was his middle name)
Nechole (I'm guessing it was supposed to be Nicole/Nichole, but looks like Neck hole to me)
Jannifer
Sh'Quantawhana

I've got a list somewhere of some of the most outrageous ones. I'll look for it and add to the post.

My guess is that it's a girl named Kevin. They changed the spelling to "girl it up."

My niece's name is pronounced just like the boys' name Camden. But since she is a girl, SIL switched the E to a Y to make it look more girlie.

Jordan Hare Stadium at Auburn University is pronounced Jur-dan.

Some one mentioned Kristofer earlier, that is the Swedish spelling.
