My DH and I are going to WDW in May 2011. It's my first time going, his 3rd. I'm just wondering what unusual items most don't think about packing, but would be very useful on a trip to WDW. Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

one of the best suggestions I have ever received regarding packing an unusual item was suggested by someone here on the Dis. That item was a power strip. We tried it and it was an excellent suggestion, no more worrying about having enough outlets to charge cell phones, cameras, video cameras, I-pods etc. Everything charges at once during the night and is ready in the morning.

How about a soft side cooler, they have some that are the size thaat would hold a sixpack look for one that might have a long strap so you could carry it iver your shoulder.

While we have not needed to do this in quite awhile (and have not looked in the stores recently) - what we used to do - prior to leaving, was to buy various "Disney Items" locally, hide them, and then give them to the kids after we got there. This included t-shirts, ears, autograph books, etc. It really did save a lot of money over buying at WDW.

an over the door shoe bag is great for all the little bathroom stuff, it keeps your counters cleared off, power strip, popup clothes hamper or laundry bag for dirty clothes, extra bag to bring home all your souveniors

If you're going in late May, be aware that they typically hold Star Wars Weekends at Hollywood Studios the last 2 Weekends of the month (Fri, Sat, Sun) So if Star Wars is something either of you are interested in, you might want to bring a toy lightsaber or something and be ready to take lots and lots of pictures. They do a great job with those events.

If Star Wars isn't your thing, then ignore all that, and just watch out for a big crowd a the studios during those times.

Clothespins (to keep drapes shut, if there's a gap, or to hang up wet swimsuits.

Different sizes of Ziploc bags. Tons of uses for these, for corraling stuff or keeping things dry.

An electrical power strip. There are never enough outlets in hotel rooms to charge things like phones, digital cameras, etc.

Cheap "emergency" ponchos. You can get these at places like Target for about $1. Nice to have a couple tucked into a pocket or backpack in case of rain (the Coleman brand is very compact). You can literally throw them away when done, if you don't want to fuss around with folding them for later use.

Nightlight. It's always disorienting to find the bathroom in a strange hotel room!

We found that packing dish soap in a little pump bottle (from the travel section of the beauty supplies), and those Purex 3in1s are great. We just use a little squirt in our cups (sippy or mugs) and the hotel washcloth to clean them daily.

Great ideas everyone. I found collapsible boxes at the dollar store that I will be using to control stuff in the room, bathroom etc.

We also pack a couple of kitchen sized garbage bags to use for dirty and/or wet clothes when packing for the return since it seems that we always overpack and try to keep the clean clothes separate so they don't have to be washed upon our return.

If you drink water instead of soda or coffee. Bring a refillable water bottle at 3.00 a bottle you can save alot of money.

If you are wearing tennis shoes, definitely pack extra pairs. For a 7 day stay I take 3 extra pairs. Your feet sweat alot and I like to have a fresh pair sometimes for dinner time and night.

Another thing I pack is my slippers. Nothing like putting them on after a long day walking in the park. (not to mention the floors)

Also love the poncho tip, definitely do that one.

If you are used to sleeping with noise, don't forget a white noise machine. I keep one in my suitcase at all times. The one time I forgot it, I swear I didn't sleep all week.:rotfl:

pop up hamper (check)
over door shoe hanger (check)
power strip (check)
ziploc bags (check)
purex 3in1 laundry sheets (check)
small container or something to corral passes, keys, etc (check)

These 6 items relieve so many headaches! I can manage to travel alone without these, however, anytime we go anywhere as a family, these go in the suitcase before anything else!

My mom taught me to always pack an empty bag in my suitcase in case you purchase enough souveniers that you end up needing more space. I always go to WDW thinking I won't buy souveniers this time, but I always inevitably find something I really want and have to consider whether there is room in my bag if I don't have an extra. I like the Vera Wang duffle bags since they are lightweight and don't take up much space in my suitcase.

Yes, I need noise. I actually have an app on my droid for that! ;) :thumbsup2
