So Sam, we went to Mount Vernon today to see the tulip fields. We went last year for the first time with the boys, and DS2 (who I think had just turned two at the time) went NUTS, running through the rows of tulips (which you aren't allowed to do!) Of course we had no choice but to charge through there after him.
Then we'd be walking by a row, and he'd kick or whack his hand across a flower head, and it would fly off!
This year I was determined to keep a tight grip on the little monkey, but of course I'm the family photographer, so I turned him over to DH's care. Next thing I know, DS2 is running off, and I look at DH like "WTH?!" And he says, "What? Did I do something wrong?"
Fortunately this time he stayed on the main paths. DH walked along after him while I took photos (and DS6 stayed with me to take an occasional photo.) Then DS2 came running up as fast as he could, chattering about "cows! Mama, cows!" Sure enough there was a mama cow and a couple calves, I think. I guess he went charging right up to the fence and stopped to look, and the mama cow came toward him. He freaked, and squeezed under and behind Daddy's legs. Wish I'd seen that, I bet it was hilarious!
DH told him it was all right, it was just a moo cow coming to say hi. He stuck his head out and looked up: "Moo cow?" DH said, "Yes, you know what a cow is. Cows say 'moo'."
DS2 looked up at the mama cow and lectured her sternly in her own language, "
Moo, cow!" DH said the cow again stepped forward toward DS2, and he took off running away and toward me.
