DD did it for a couple of years. Actually she was in 2 programs at once, the gifted program and another program for children that couldn't pass the WASL. (Washington's standardized test for you non Washingtonians). We actually got sick of the WASL so we let her opt out of some of the tests, so she got an F on them. They sent home a note saying that they were placing her in a special program so she could catch up with her peers! We got a good laugh out of that one. Apparently according to the school she was both gifted and remedial at the same time. I called the school and they took her off he remedial list. All they seen was the score, they didn't bother to check and see if she actually took the tests.

:sad2: spazoids.

iyt does seem like everyone on the community board has a child in gifted classes, doesnt it? It almost makes me ashamed to admit my kids are average.... sometimes I wonder about Mikalah. Like when she runs head first into a sliding glass door. :sad2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
I think a lot of people have average children, they just don't talk a lot about the subject, ya know? it's a very skewed sampling of people who respond on those threads.

DH is gifted in many ways, though he was never treated that way growing up, so he doesn't really see it. (The man can amortize a loan in his head. Sam, you understand how bizarre that is, right? I'm talking darn near to the penny!) I was a smart kid, though I doubt gifted.

I see signs in DS7 that he has Daddy's gift with math, and he's reading at a 5th grade level. Does that mean he's 'gifted', or just bright? I don't know. If we were asked to put him in the gifted program, i'd definitely consider it. Unless I felt it would put undue pressure on him, I think these programs in general encourage better study habits and give the kids more opportunities to learn, and ideally more challenging material. I wasn't given that opportunity as a child, I was always used as a classroom tutor, helping the other kids. I wish I'd been given more challenging work!

oh yeah she is but only for 1 day...the 14th...you want to meet up with her?
Only if she wants too. If she only has one day, and if with her Mom or something..........i don't want to make her feel uncomfortable or anything. Who is she going with?

you know I had no idea about the gifted program until tiff was in 5th grade...I seriously wish I had known...to this day I cant figure out how that went over my head because I was so involved with her school life...she always read 4 to 5 grade levels ahead and got good grades in every class but once again that goes to show you how freaking retarded california school systems are...I swear I hate our school system:mad: alex if i were you i would definitely see about getting him in the gifted program if you can

no what did it say?
Oh it was just a nice one page article on it. Something about it being the longest and biggest one around. They've been doing it for 85 years, and it's about 2 miles long!!! Think I'll try to check it out again this year.

Lynn, just as a little anecdote: We lived in the Bay Area when i was in 2nd - 5th grade. They started a new program (I've since heard a term for it, but I can't remember what it's called) that failed miserably, but basically they allowed each child to determine the pace at which we wanted to work in each subject. I loved reading and spelling, so I always did the maximum allowed work in that subject, and wound up finishing up the curriculum halfway through the school year. I was not fond of math, and did the minimum.

As a result, when we moved to Washington in 5th grade, I was a full grade behind in math! :scared1: Dumb, dumb, dumb! :sad2:

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Yes, my gifted children do that all the time, especially on Thursdays when the sliding door gets cleaned!

Have you ever thought about a timer. They're cheap, and it's to nice to have them go off automatically. We usually set ours at 10:00pm or so.

We have several timers, some that are set for so many hours and some that come on at dawn and go off at dusk. I'm just not sure if he used them this year. Last year we were having problems with some of them so it was easier just to unplug everything when we went to bed. Hopefully he did put timers on and they will just turn off here in a bit.
