My daughter wants to major in Musical Theater in College after she graduates from high school next year. Is anyone here a student at UCF or do you know anything about their Musical Theater Department? thanks.

I am a UCF student. I don't know anything about the musical theatre dept. but I could go on and on about how great UCF is in general. I would totally check it out! I graduate in May and couldn't be happier!!!

Thats great that you love the school. And congratulations on your upcoming graduation! We will be in the Disney area for 12 days starting Wednesday, and my daughter is going to take the tour of the school. We have heard they have a really good musical theater dept.

If she's looking for a program dedicated to the arts, New World Scool of the Arts in Miami is the best in the state. I've had several friends attend that school and they've all gone on to Broadway and off-broadway productions. If you can, I would get some information from them and see about an audition.

UCF is a fine, average, middle of the road, sort of university. They don't call it U Can't Finish for nothing, as there will always be some sort of reason why you need to take more credit hours than originally planned. The theatre program, I blieve, takes at least five years to complete. If your daughter is serious about getting into her career as soon as possible, this wait may be tedious.

I hope this will help. :thumbsup2

I think that Walt Disney World sometimes looks at UCF when they are looking for talent in theater and music. At least that's what a student in musical performance told DS at Disney last year.
If that's true, sounds to me like a definite plus when considering the school!

It is true. They also hire many engineers from UCF.
I would say UCF is more than an average school these days. With UF getting harder and harder to get into, UCF is gaining more respect and attention from many IB students and more serious students throughout the state.

Nicole. My DD will be attending in the fall. How do you feel about the security on campus. She's put in for the Lake Claire apartments.

I am a student from the University of Florida and I can say that they increase the admissions standards every single year. Our Engineering department is #1 in the State and Top Tier in the Nation.

And I would say that Disney mostly recruits Engineering students from UF!

About UCF: It is not the best school, but definitely it is getting better... And yes, Disney recruits Theater and Music students, but fewer Engineers than UF or Georgia Tech.

If you want to stay in Orlando, go to UCF. At the end, you are the one who puts value to your diploma (by getting great GPA, etc). And yes, they have a good music program.

I am from Orlando and I am attending UF in Gainesville because I like it, and the Engineering program is top-notch.

I actually never said that UCF recuits "more" Engineers than UF. I just said many.
When we toured Florida schools, I was unimpressed by UF. They seem way too dedicated to football than academics. JMO. I know it's one of the favorites of Floridians. Luckily my daughter liked UCF better. I'm also a believer that you get what you put into an education. Even a doctor that comes from the worst medical school is called "doctor".
Good luck in Engineering. It's a great field.

SamRoc,

If you're looking for musical theater, FSU has an amazing program. They send students to perform in NYC every year, and I have a good friend who just graduated their program...it is strenuous, but she loved it!

Just a thought...it might be worth looking into. Good luck with your search!

I am very glad you asked this question, as I was wondering the same thing! I also am graduating next year and plan to major in Musical theatre. I was also considering UCF solely for its location and possible connection to performance jobs at Disney. It's nice to hear that they do hire from that school.
