Universal vs. Disney

Sorry to you Universal fans, but I think it's just so pathetic how Universal has to put down Disney to get publicity. If oyu dont know what I'm talking about in Universal's comercials they say stuff like "Pixie dust and fairy tales not your thing..." and "If i had to hug one more princess on my vacation I was going to hurl" and all that crap.

It's just so stupid. I dont understand it, Disney has never done anything to Universal, at least that I know of, so why would Universal critisize Disney? The only thing I can think of is when we were at Whispering Canyon our waiter told us before we could eat we ahd to promise never to go to Universal, and of course he was joking, so I thought it was funny. But anyways, Disney was there first. In Florida, and Califnoria. I've been to Universal once, and I admit that it's pretty fun, but I would pick Disney any day over Universal.

I think its kid of funny how Universal puts down Disney in their comercials, but Disney doesnt fire back in theirs. Which shows Disney has more class, in my opinion.

Any other thoughts?

btw, as u can tell, I'm not the best writer lol. sorry for any typos run-ons or stuff like that. English has never been my best subject.

Well that campaign didn't work. Attendance last year at USO and IOA were both off IOA fell below Disney's California Adventure in attendance.

Universal doesn't get it. Disney is the destination park. They should play off it and into it rather than bashing it. It's not about making me not want to go to Disney. Tell me in your advertising other than come when one is tired of Disney why we should go all the way down to Universal rather than go to the nearest six flags or Dollywood. Better yet. Tell me why when I'm done at Disney and I'm down there, why your park is worth adding a couple or 3 days to my trip rather than just going home. Universal's in Disney's face advertising doesn't do that.

I really don't think it's all quite as insidious as you are portraying. It's just simple marketing of one of the distinct differences that sets Universal apart from Disney.

Although both family destinations, Universal swings toward more adult offerings where WDW swings toward more G rated offerings. Why shouldn't Universal tout themselves as an alternative choice for those who are ready for a break from "the happiest place on earth"?

Don't get me wrong, I love the whimsy of WDW and enjoy myself when I'm there. But, I'm also an adrenaline junkie and, although WDW offers a few thrills, I really love the more funky, adult atmosphere of Universal just as much as I enjoy WDW.

I think the commercials are hilarious because I can completely relate to the feeling of "one more overly cute experience and I'm gonna hurl" feeling. I think perhaps you might be being a little bit sensitive - it's just a commercial after all.

I agree with MartDM. I am not a huge thrill-seeker, but sometimes we need something different. I am not Disney obsessed and I do not want to go to Disney every year for vacation. I would like to go to Hawaii, Italy, Greece, Egypt, New York and other places. I believe those commercials are to appeal to those types...the non-Disney obsessed.

Don't take it personal, it is just advertising. Shrek pokes major fun at Disney. Do you refuse to watch the movie? Just a though! :flower:

agreed!
and by the way we just got back from universal and had a great time!
but still wdw is my fav!

It's also a matter of marketing. Number two always bashes number one, but why should number one waste their time and money bashing number two?

You hear all about Coke in Pepsi ads, but you never hear about Pepsi in Coke ads.

If you're of a certain age, you may remember Avis' campaign that said "We're Number 2, We Try Harder, " referring to Hertz. But Hertz ads have never mentioned Avis.

There's a difference between touting your plusses ie we try harder vs bashing the competition. I refer to take positive approach about what I can do better that to run down the other guy. I am biased but Universal crosses that fine line I think.

I don't think it's a big deal at all. What they say in the commercial is the truth. Whilemost kids love Disney, not all of them do. My little cousin, who turned 5 yesterday, like Shrek and Spongebob more than Mickey Mouse and Cinderella. She's not into the whole princess thing, that's just the way she is. So, needless to say, she likes Universal Studios better than Disney, and probably would hurl is she had to hug another princess! :rotfl:

Universal is just saying that they offer something different. Everyone knows that Disney is about princesses, cuddly characters, and everything "cute". It's geared towards children and families. Universal is more about thrills and has a more "adult" atmosphere. That's what they're saying in the ads.

It's all just business. It's not like they are being really harsh on Disney. They are just touting Universal as an alternative to Disney. As long as they dont have an ad like " If you go to Disney World, you are supporting terrorism!" its all good.

I know it's like the Coke and Pepsi deal, and I know it happens alot of other times with two companies. What I'm saying is: I like Disney better than Universal, and I just think its stupid how they have to make Disney seem so little kidish. In some parts Disney is little kidish, but they have areas for adults and an adrenaline junkies, like West Side, Plasure Island, and MGM. It's the same with Universal, there's places for little kids, and theres places for older people.

I just think it's stupid how Universal started bashing Disney. I've never gotten tired of Disney, and I don't think I ever will. I would totally pick Disney Universal any day.

I just think Disney has something to offer that no other amusement park can, so I dont think there's any point in bashing them for being "fun for the whole family" or "the happiest place one earth." To me, thats a good thing.

Don't get me wrong, I laugh at the jokes that people make of Disney World too, like the episode of the Simpsons when they go to Disney World, that was halarious, but when the jokes are made to get people to go to the other guy, when the other guy knows that Disney is better than them, I think it's just stupid.

Ha ha. No, I don't think they are being harsh on Disney, and I understand where they're going with some of their comercials. Disney can be overly cute is some areas, but there's also places for adults and teens.

I just don't see any point in them bashing Disney, when really, they're both not that different. It's just that Disney sports their more fun for the whole family side then they do their stuff like Tower Of Terror, Rockin Roller Coaster, all the mountains, that sort of stuff. Where it's the oppisite for Universal.

I would just rather go to Disney then Universal, because I have alot of good memories there, and I just grew up going to Disney all the time.

Love2CtheMouse: No, Shrek is halarious. But they're making fun of Disney 'cause its a comedy, Disney makes fun of themselves sometimes in their movies. Unversal makes fun of them to draw people away from Disney.

I don't see anything wrong with this because I have seen the results of what this kind of advertising can do. On my turf, here in Ohio, we used to have a Sixflags. That is until they came up with the idea to make an advertising campaign that showed people driving past Cedar Point and going to Sixflags. The idea was to put Cedar Point out of business. It compleatly backfired on them and after three years of major declines in attendence, the park was bought by Cedar Point's parent company :rotfl2: . I know Disney and Universal are much bigger companys but that's the result of a similar campign.

From someone who lives in the land of the mouse and hears WDW commercials on the radio multiple times a day in addition to those on TV, I have to agree with the Universal commercial. I am so sick of hearing about becoming a princess. It makes me want to hurl.

Don't get me wrong. I love WDW. I go there all the time, but I also love Universal. They have different offerings and are both great parks. I thought the commercial was very funny. By the way, I live next to several Disney imagineers and they told me they thought it was a great commercial. It's called having a sense of humor.

Well, if you have children those ages, you will know exactly what they are saying. Mine did get tired of Disney. Universal is clean and bright and exciting. As kids start growing up they definately enjoy the universal adventure.

As far as Disney not doing anything to Universal..lol. Uh, yes they do, only way worse than any commercial. Fortunately the stunts disney has tried to pull have not worked, thank goodness.

We love Disney and Universal. DD likes RnR & SM, but also likes The Hulk and Dueling Dragons (I think that's the name of it).

I think having both Universal and Disney World in Florida is healthy competition for each. We reap the rewards of this competition, rides like EE at AK and Mummy at US. Let each keep raising that bar and I will keep visiting.

Thats a good point. I agree with you all the way.

WDW is not giving Free Dining out of the Goodness of their Hearts...or paying Mega $$$ for the Bus from the Airport so you don't rent a car :confused3

What has Disney tired to do?

Disney tried very hard to get a light rail system from the Orlando International airport to WDW property bypassing the I-4 corridor. That would have given them a great advantage over Universal and other hotels along I-4. When that didn't work, they came up with Magical Express. I don't blame Disney. It is an excellent marketing strategy. The point is that Disney is out to make money. So is Universal. They do what they need to do. It makes for healthy competition where we, the consumers, win.
