I just took a survey for Universal Studios where they asked about ideas for a Lord of the Rings theme park or section of a theme park. They said it was purely Blue Sky -- but it sounds like a fantastic idea, if they choose to develop it.
This would be wonderful. But that's my opinion. There is all ready a section for Harry Potter over at IOA and now one for LOTR in Universal, I am a fan of both, but Harry Potter themeing has a more child-adult orientation than LOTR could ever have.
Nonetheless, I'd enjoy it!

I don't know if LOTR has the staying power to be relevant for 15 yrs or so.
It would be absolutely awesome! I'm thinking they would try to make it bigger then WWoHP, from what i've heard anyway. I don't know...Do they have enough space for it? Or would it be a full on park by itself...I don't know what kind of food they would have, can't see them selling maggoty Urukhai bread!
I would disagree with this part. I believe the LOTRs movies were far better then Harry Potter. But I still am dying to see WWoHP. And would love a LOTR area as well.
Mesaboy calling an Australian a Mew Zealander is about as insulting as it can get. If you called me English it would be worse.
The survey also asked about the possibility of Shrek attractions or even a Shrek land or park, but there were not as many questions and they were not as detailed.
Johny Duck you do realise that LOTR was relevant for over 45 years before the movies came out and the books are still very popular as the book approach 60 years of publication.
Globally it is in 38 languages and the International box office of Return of the King is higher than any of the HP movies. In 03 Great Britain voted it the nations best loved book, Germany did similar as did Australia. In 99 an Amazon.com poll gave it the book of the century. I travel a lot for work and have spoken with people from Thailand, Italy, Denmark and Poland who all love LOTR. It certainly has international appeal, and long lasting appeal.
I'd be willing to bet 15 years down the track LOTR will have a better following than Harry Potter, which I also love.
A Lord of the Rings themed land would be a huge success if done well, and since there is so much extra material you could easily update it and swap things up.
They have a land called Far Far Away with a Shrek castle in the new Universal park in Singapore, maybe that has something to do with that question. Here's a link showing the castle and how much it looks like Cinderella Castle in MK.

They also recently had a survey asking about adding a waterpark onsite,I know they own Wet n Wild about 2 minutes from the park on Universal Blvd and I-Drive and even though I really like that park and that corner of I-Drive would look weird without Wet n Wild there I know if they made a new waterpark onsite it would add a lot to the property and make the resort feel more complete.I just have to wonder with their limited room what would be their best option I know I've seen renderings of new hotels to go in that land between Turkey lake rd and Royal Pacific,I know from looking at the space they seem to have two lots that could probably hold a waterpark and a hotel but I just don't see the space for anything bigger unless they get creative.
Actually my 9 yr old nephew says he rly liked The Two Towers and yet has fallen asleep on two Harry Potter films and has no interest in seeing them.
Obviously its not a worldwide thing but I would imagine it would be able to appeal to younger crowds. Plus another movie coming out within the next few yrs could mean that it will last a bit.
Although I can't imagine this happening...To me they are somewhat similar in the state where each has diff wizards with different magic. I just don't know if they would be able to co exist in the same park.
I am not that big of LoTR fan since the movie is 19 hrs of walking, but it could be semi cool to see what Universal could do with it.
It has to be hard for Universal to keep up with this theme'ing....ppls minds change of what is classic or good from age to age and from year to year. It is hard to stay hip and fresh to be able to appeal to everyone. I don't know if LOTR has the staying power to be relevant for 15 yrs or so.
