Universal pokes a little fun at WDW

Disney does create an atmosphere like no where else. Universal, however, creates rides like no where else. I love the atmosphere at Disney and can't wait to go back, but the rides at Universal seem to be ahead of anything Disney has. We go to Disney for the fairy tale experience, and we go to Universal to just have a plain old great time on great rides. We are not married to either or loyal to one, we love them both for their individuality and the fact that they create two different atmospheres.

Haven't seen the ads yet, but it sounds like they're targeted towards Teens, Young Adults, and those disillusioned by The Mouse.

As for Uni Hollywood, don't you the impression of that park to base your impression of UO, the one in Hollywood is completely different.

As for the Universal Orlando parks- they are nothing like your standard Six Flags amusement park located anywhere in the country. The themeing (sp?) is spectacular and a majority of the rides really immerse you in the story. Thats more than I can say for a lot of the more current Disney attractions.

I'm not bashing Disney, but I just don't feel that magic there anymore.

Well, my boyfriend Chris and I, Sheri (both adults in our late 20's early 30's) just got back. We spent 6 days at Disney and 2.5 days at Universal and quite frankly, we were not happy with Universal at all.

Spiderman was awesome. And T2 (which is NOT for children). That was about it. The other things they had were ok but more thrill ride-y than we care for. And the thrill rides pale in comparison to ToT. Also on Back to the Future, if you look over, you can see all the other people in other cars riding and it really breaks the illusion.

We like the experience of being at Disneyworld. We like strolling through the WS, riding Spaceship Earth and the fairy tale type rides. We like sitting on Main Street having a snack and watching the wonder on little kids faces.

You don't get that at Universal. I noticed a few things at Universal that I REALLY did not like:

1. Employees in costume walking around on their lunch breaks with soda and food. Tacky and ruined the illusion.

2. VERY clueless and surly employees. We only had one nice experience with a young lady who tried to help us get an answer to a question but she had no support from her fellow employees and thus we didn't get an answer. Pleasant people were the minority here.

3.FILTHY counter service places. Every table we sat down at had guck all over it; several outdoor tables had bird droppings. No cleaning people seemed to care.

4. Lots of people smoking in crowded areas and employees walking by not saying a word. (Chris smokes and ALWAYS goes to designated areas...and even then he MOVES if a child wants to look at something close by).

5. MANY highly innapropriate peices of clothing being worn. I know this can happen anywhere, but I think Disney would pull the person aside and ask that they turn the shirts inside out (or put shirts on in the case of women wandering around in string bikinis).

The worst one was a 10 year old boy with his parents wearing a shirt for some sort of biker group with a half naked woman on it; or the 14 year old boy wearing a shirt that said " I like sl*ts " or the young college age guy who was wearing a shirt with the word "s**t" in its message. This upstanding and obviously charming individual was selected for an audience participation and thus got stand in front of a large crowd of people wearing this wonderful garment. No employees seemed to care.

6. Overcrowding. Not lines. Lines are to be expected everywhere and we honestly didn't have much problem with this. But things like Earthquake, Twister and Posiedons Fury that require walking through with a tour guide, we felt cramped. I missed most of Posiedons , which I had been really looking forward to, because they squeeze so many people in that its hard to enjoy it unless you are up front, and I was not about to block the view of children, as many adults were.

7. Bad street entertainment. The Ghostbusters thing was esp. bad. It just was horrid. And when the guy playing Beetlejuice used the word "fr*ggin" in his dialouge, we actually decided to get up and leave. Not a curse word, but not really something that was needed to be said. The other "show" was some guys in a van breakdancing. 'Nuff said.

8. Characters just not fun. We met a bunch of the characters, and the people handling them rushed everyone along, even when there was no one in line. We had a few run ins with some nasty character wranglers (as Chris calls them)

9. Horrible music pumped through the park. At Disney you can relax and the music fits the atmosphere. At universal we had to listen to some terrible rap top 40 blaring through the park.

10. Tacky stores. City walk just did nothing for us. We enjoyed our meal at Margaritaville but we found most of the shops to be tacky and not places we'd ever go into again. The Endangered species store was nice. But we went into Dapy and it was mostly centered around Playboy merchandise. Yuck.

I don't know. I can't imagine spending an entire vacation at Universal. We might go back once in a while and go on Spiderman which WAS very good and check out the Mummy which I REALLY hope is good because if they ruin ancient Egypt for me, I'll weep.
Really, we spent 1/2 a day in each park and then went to PI for our evenings at the Adventurers Club.

We are 99% sure we are going back in early December for a quick Disney fix. We'll be skipping Universal and probably won't go back to Universal unless we are going for 2 weeks of Disney and would have time to take one day.

So I guess Universal can take all the cheap shots they want at Disney - as Chris says, they just don't have that Disney Magic!

Actually, I do get it. I went to Disneyland for the first time in 1957 and almost yearly for 20 years. We moved to Orlando to be near WDW. I love WDW and have a PAP. But loving Disney does not make me hate Universal. They are different but neither is bad. Some prefer universal and some prefer Disney. I like them both and for different reasons. I jumped in this discussion because of the statement about filthy bathrooms. I'm not saying it has never happened but I am saying I have never seen dirty bathrooms there. Universal and IoA have always been as clean as Disney parks when I have gone.

I like pixie dust and thrill rides.

The difference I think is, I saw a NASTY bathroom at Epcot one of the days last week and I alerted a CM and when I went back 30 minutes later, the bathroom was spotless. At Universal, I had a similiar experience and no action was taken.

I really did not like the employees at Universal. Like I said in my long post, they were almost all clueless or surly.

No thanks, I'm keeping my pixie dust and fairy tales!

THATS what I forgot. Yes. Regular fast passes things there are gone for everything early and I think its so you'll spend the $20 or whatever a person to buy the extra thing. And did you know the cost of those things changes depending on how many people are in the park? An employee told us that when were there last week.

Actually I've had more rude experiences with Disney employees then at Universal. The only pleasant employees I've met at Disney were lifeguards.

If you didn't like the Ghostbusters show, thank goodness you didn't go over to Beetlejuice. But even so BJ does have a rating of PG-13 so the jokes and things are intended for older audiences. Sorry you didn't enjoy the GB show. It really is cute and silly.

The only rude employees at Universal that I have ever dealt with were ALL female and they worked on MIB. But that's a different story for a different day :hyper:

Anyways, sorry your experience with Universal wasn't as pleasant as ones other people have had.

Did you just diss the Ghostbusters?!?!?!?!!? WHOAAAAAA!!! he Ghostbusters is a highly entertaining show...has many fans and people who enjoy it. I understand people have different tastes, but for the love of God! "Horrid?!" Wow...that doesn't make any "fr*ggin" sense to me! ;) (Chill...I'm joking with you!)

And the breakdancers are quite talented! I'm not usually a fan of breakdancing, but I appreciate their hard work...just like for the other shows. Oh yeah...I agree with Keriann...definitely glad you didn;t see the Graveyard Revue nor the Horror Makeup Show!!

Pleasant people were the minority here.

Ha!!! I gotta laugh at this one....have yet to encounter an unpleasant employee here. I've become friends with a lot of employees. They have all been very helpful. However, next time you have a question, you can find me at the Ghostbusters Show stage, I'm sure I can help answer your question.

FILTHY counter service places. Every table we sat down at had guck all over it; several outdoor tables had bird droppings. No cleaning people seemed to care.

Wow...and to believe that when I was there on Saturday, that the EXACT second I got up from eating dinner at the park, an employee went right to my table to wipe it down. No kidding! I was surprised...I had just got to the trash can to throw away my garbage, and when I turned around he had just finished wiping it off! Squeaky clean! :)

Horrible music pumped through the park. At Disney you can relax and the music fits the atmosphere. At universal we had to listen to some terrible rap top 40 blaring through the park

*cough* rap? Is that what you consider rap? Hmmm....maybe I need to get my hearing checked, but the last time I heard "New York, New York" or "I'm A Believer" I didn't consider that rap...

*edited* whoops...I'm on a roll of typos tonight! :p :p

Esmerelda: You said the Ghostbusters show was "horrid", but didn't even stay for the entire thing?? Maybe a different word should be used in this case seeing that you didn't watch the show, just the first 2 minutes.

Okay. City Walk is NOTHING like PI. PI has the Adventurers Club and plenty of places for adults. All I saw at Citywalk was top 40. All I heard blaring through the park was rap. I don't know anyone over the age of 21 who listens to rap.

You probably didn't visit all of CityWalk then...or at least not at the right time. I....had a lovely experience at Citywalk last Saturday night...not going to get into that too much....but let's just say...most people were over 21, and having a BLAST.

LOL Clare :bounce:

One of the good places to go in CityWalk is Pat O'Brien's. If you went on a Friday night The Groove has teen nights so you were probably hearing music from that. The Groove is also intended for the college age people on all other nights

Pat O'Brien's. Ahhh! That's where I was. In front of that place. LOL. Yeah...let's just say, that night wasn't a "teen night" :p :p :p

Citywalk is Universal's Pleasure Island. No, it is not Disney's Pleasure Island anymore than IoA is the Magic Kingdom.

My comparison was to show you that if the only part of WDW that a newcomer saw was Pleasure Island they would not be able to tell what the Magic Kingdom was like.

I am sorry that I ever joined this discussion as personally I don't care if others like Universal or not. I was just trying to clear up some mistatements.

I'm still trying to figure out just what park you were visiting to hear rap music. It darn sure wasn't Universal. I go at least once a week and have never heard rap music.

Wow, now ya'll see what I mean about some peoples' comments being a LITTLE ( OK alot) over the top about Universal. I think we all know which poster i am talking about. Even if I had never been to Universal to witness it myself, I would have a hard time believing someones experience was that bad. My last trip there we were there for 5 days straight and never witnessed such. We are going to WDW for a week this weekend but we will also be going to Universal for a whole week in June. Oh and by the way, the last time we went to Universal, we were not staying onsite, did not buy the Express pass pluses, but had NO problem getting Express passes for all the rides and it was very crowded.

I stayed for a few minutes and was surprised that the show had nothing to do with the movie ghostbusters. Humor about boy bands just is not amusing to me.

And noting that you are both about to turn 17 & 18 , I am not going to attempt to have a serious conversation about why Universal is not as good as Disney. Universal is primarily targeted at your age group, not mine and certainly not families.

We just had a really bad time at Universal. We do not like thrill rides and found the non thrill rides to be boring and the music to be pretty bad. Maybe we happened to hit the 30 or 40 worst employees at Universal but they were mostly kids who just could have cared less. I've only very rarely seen that at Disney.

You know what's funny, Rescue Ranger? If you read the Universal/IoA board here at DisBoards, you never hear Disney bashing.

I like both WDW and Universal. I moved to Orlando to be near WDW not to be near Universal. We bought PAPs for WDW right away and only bought Universal annual passes because they had a 2 years for the price of one year deal through Burger King.

The first 3 months here we spent entirely at Disney. Then finally ventured over to Universal and now visit Universal more than Disney. The benefits for passholders at Universal is incredible. Whenever we buy food or merchandise we get a discount there. They even had a special viewing area for the Mardi Gras parades for passholders.

Staying on the Disney property is such a unique experience that Universal can never compete with!

LOL... Sorry but the onsite experience at US/IOA beats WDW any day of the week.

Onsite at WDW=
EE for 1 hr, at the park of their chosing
Transportation that can take up to 45 min to get to a location

onsite at US/IOA...

15-20 minute max to either park and City Walk. That is walking or water taxi.

No waiting in line. Room key acts as your express pass and gives you priority seating at most restaurants.

And noting that you are both about to turn 17 & 18 , I am not going to attempt to have a serious conversation about why Universal is not as good as Disney. Universal is primarily targeted at your age group, not mine and certainly not families.

You are so right. Teens just love Barney, Fivial, Curious George, Woody Wookpecker, ET, Nick Jr and Dr Seuss.

Just because it is your opinion that US/IOA is not as good as WDW does not make it so. Why are you so hell bent on wanting everyone to agree with you. Sorry but we all have our own opinions, and my opinion is as I stated to DH when we entered IOA the first time... "I'll be damned, IOA has out themed Disney".
Serious conversation or not, my opinion is my opinion and I have every right to it.

US/IOA might be the Fav of my 14 DS but it is also the favorite of his 36 mother, his 42 father, 47yr aunt, 6 sister and 10 cousin.

The best employee experience we ever had in a park was at US. We rode Kong, which DD had no trouble with at age 3. However on that trip at age 4 1/2 she didn't like it at all. The employee at the exit noticed how upset DD was and asked her if she wanted to see that the "big monkey" wasn't real. DD said yes and the girl told us to walk up to the control booth so DD could see the monitors. I expected to just look through the glass, but the door opened and DD was invited inside to look around. The employees took the time to talk to DD and even let her sit down in one of the chairs at the monitors.

On the other hand the worst experience we had was AK. Our group of 8 were in the regulalr line for Dinosaur. AS we started through the area where they add the FP holders, one of the broke inbetween myself and my 4 DD. DH and my mother had been separated from us and were not right behind the rest of the group. The CM would not let me go back, she kept screaming at me, and it was so packed I couldn't get through. She starts shutting the doors for the preshow, with me, my sister, DS and DNi trying to get by her. She just kept saying "your party will meet you on the other side". Sis and I squeezed through the exit doors as soon as they were unlocked. DS and DNi hung around to get the name of the CM. She started screaming at DS to get out. Luckily DH had hear DD yelling and found her in the other preshow area. We told the first CM we saw that we needed a supervisor right then. They had to send for one and he was waiting for us when we got off the ride. He seemed concerned, but didn't offer any "pixie dust" to help DD. I really thought that at least a couple of fast passes or something would have been to right thing to do.

The second worst was at Epcot. My niece had promised DD that they would sit next to each other on TT. When we got on DNi decided she was scared and wanted between 2 adults. DD was trying to get her cousin to sit with her, but the CM insisted that DD was scared and that we were forcing her to ride. The CM would not start the ride with DD on it (although it was 9 DNi that was scared, not 4 DD).

Now don't get me wrong. We love WDW, but hands down US/IOA is the fav in mine and my sisters households.

I jsut don't get the point of why so many here have so much pixie dust in their eyes that they can't see that US/IOA are great parks in their own right. Then again, it seems the dust has blinded many to to fact that not everyone here likes the same things. You (the collective you) seem to think that anyone who likes US/IOA is under 21, listens to rap and can not carry on a serious conversation. Sorry but "you" are dead wrong.

We manage to get to IOA/Universal about once every 3-4 years. Ditto for Seaworld. All nice in their own way, but for us, certainly not worth a trip all the way to Florida.

Back to the original thread tho--Universal knows that they can't match Disney in Pixie Dust appeal--sorry, but Woody Woodpecker just isn't a match for Mickey (or Tinkerbell, for that matter).
So they go after the other crowd--and to me, that does seem to be mostly thrill seeking teens and young adults. Our last trip at IOA, I don't recall seeing anyone over 20 years old:D

And the "music" at Citywalk. I don't recall exactly what was playing the day we went to IOA, but it was pretty poor. And unlike Pleasure Island (where you make a special visit if you want that kind of thing) Citywalk almost forces you to hear the music as you get to and from IOA. A real assault on the hearing, that's for sure, especially at 9:00 AM.
