HI, I'm sure this question has been asked a gazillion times but I can't find it. sooooo ...

Its not our first time visiting the world but our boys are finally of age to visit Universal and IOA!!!! Is it possible to do park-park in one day?? We have three boys teen and pre-teen so we don't need breaks or naps anymore (lol). Maybe my DH but he'll live. Oh and our trip is on the last week of August 2016.

here are my questions if you can help.

Which park is best to start off with?
What rides are a must?
Where does Hogwarts Express take you too? and do you pay for this train ride?
How do I get from IOA to Universal or vice versa?

Thank you in advance!

what day of the week is your time at UO?

i only ask as some days have crowds.
especially saturdays.

1. It's totally possible but exhausting!

2. If HP is a priority than start at US and head straight back to Diagon Alley. It's amazing! Then take the Hogwarts express over to Hogsmeade in IOA. It doesn't cost extra but you have to have a park to park pass to ride. You want to ride the train from this direction first as it's the most magical. Then once your done with HP Hogsmeade you can walk through to Jurassic Park and the new King Kong ride. Loop around to the comic world and then back to the Hogwarts express to see the ride from another direction. Then you will be back in US and can hit up Simpsons, etc

3 You can take the Hogwarts express between the parks or you can walk through Citywalk. It's about a 1/2 mile between if I'm not mistaken

4. I will leave the ride recommendations to others as I get too sick to ride most rides at Universal ..and they aren't meant for us "pooh sized" folks.

It is possible to do the highlights but not possible to do everything in the parks. For some days, the parks close at 7 and for some days the crowds are huge. There are many factors.

I suggest you go through the universalorlando.com website and carefully check out all the rides. Make sure you know what are your must dos.

As a Potter fan, I would be hard pressed just to finish the Potter areas in one day! It's not just rides (4 + train), there's shows (4- 2 in each park), food, candy, ice cream, Butterbeer, shops, window decor, interactive wands, and the over-all immersion of it all. Just saying, if you have Potter fans, you might have to drag them to other areas of the park if you only have one day :D

If you have more than 1 day to spend, I really recommend it. We pretty much only covered HP and a few other rides in 1 day. We didn't have express passes but we stayed at Cabana Bay so got the extra hour in the morning (highly recommend as you get lots done!). Teens and pre-teens would very likely prefer Universal to Disney so if it's a choice of 1 day at Universal and lots of days at Disney, I'd flip flop that ratio. :)
Hogwarts Express costs in that you need the park to park ticket, which you are already planning to get. It takes you from the back of the 1 park to the back of the other so it's handy if you don't feel like walking to the front and through City Walk.

Which park is best to start off with?
I say Universal, if you're parking in the parking garage and come out, the closest park is Universal, so I would just head straight towards that park, especially since most of the time Universal does early entry. But it is only limited to certain people (certain on-site hotel guests, vacation packages, ect), however, if you do not have those things, you can still go inside the park and while you're stopped at a certain point, you can at least enjoy the main Universal gift shop at the beginning of the park and they do typically let guests in (even those who do not have early entry) 15 minutes (and on rare occasions more) early.

What rides are a must?
Depends on what your desires are. If you're Potter fans head over to the Diagon Alley straight away (or Hogsmeade if you decide to not go to Universal, but Islands of Adventure instead). Or download the Universal app prior to going to the parks and watch the wait times before you go on your trip, to see which wait times are the highest, that way you know which rides are the most popular and go on those rides before the wait becomes much higher as it typically does as they day progresses. Another idea is to simply do the research online and read the descriptions of the rides to see which ones you and your family members want to enjoy as @damo said.

Also, lastly, I suggest that if you want to go on a ride which requires to store all your belongings (yes, bags and including your phone, wallet, change, and anything else in your pockets) which are: Rip Ride Rocket, The Hulk, The Dragon Challenge, that you might go on those rides first depending which park you're at first, as even with low wait times the struggle to get a locker can be stressful and claustrophobic depending where you are. But that's only if you want to go on those rides, which if you have teen children I have a feeling they might want to go on them unless they don't like coasters.

Where does Hogwarts Express take you too? and do you pay for this train ride?
As others have stated, in a way, yes, as you need to have park-to-park admission in order to go on the Hogwarts Express since it isn't just a ride, but transportation to one park to another. Which you're planning to do anyway, so no additional cost to you! They even have people waiting outside of Kings Cross to remind you to have your ticket out.

How do I get from IOA to Universal or vice versa?
Either walk, or ride the Hogwarts Express is the simple answer. There is boat transportation in the City Walk, but not directly from one park to another. So, it's either the express, or walking. And quite honestly, if you really want to experience the Hogwarts Express as a ride, that's great, but if you're focusing on just the transportation aspect and the wait is rather long, just walk. In the time you're waiting, you could be walking. The walk from one park to another isn't bad.

Universal and IOA are adjacent. To get from one to the other, you walk out the front gates, down the huge walkway a little bit and into the other park. I suggest you go to google maps and take a look for yourself to get a feel for the layout of the whole resort.

You've gotten a lot of good advice. It is possible to do a "highlights" of the 2 parks in one day but you're not going to be able to do and see everything. 2 (or more) days lets you slow down and soak it in. At this point, it's harder to do US/IOA in a day than DAK/DHS. In both cases, you can see the highlights, but if you start seeing shows, doing extras, and wanting to ride things again, time can run away from you.

With Universal, you can see and do more if you're willing to spend the money on Express Passes. Either by buying express passes directly or by staying at one of the deluxe resorts. Often times one night at the deluxe resorts is cheaper.

For me what I consider the "Must Do" attractions (Roughly in order around the park and not by popularity)

USF
Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket
Revenge of the Mummy
Transformers
Terminator 3D
Simpsons
Men in Black
Gringotts
E.T. (if you want a classic Dark Ride)

IOA
Hulk
Spiderman
Popeye*
Dudley Do Right*
Jurrassic Park River Adventure*
Kong
Forbidden Journey
Dragon Challenge (The 2 sides are different)
Cat in the Hat (Classic Dark Ride with some spinning)
*The 3 water rides will get you drenched. They are all well done But on a 1 day trip walking around in wet clothes may need to be taken into consideration.

Looking at the reverse. Things on a 1 day trip I'd almost definitely skip.
USF
Fear Factor Live

IOA
Sinbad
Posiden's Fury

Like the previous poster mentioned, if you're a HP fan, it's worth hitting at least a little bit of the shows in each land. They are performed outside so you can stop for a few minutes then move on if time is tight.

As other's have mentioned, you can get between theme parks either by walking, maybe 1/2 a mile, between front entrances or by taking the Hogwarts Express at the back of each park.

Wow you are all AMAZING!!!!!!! I knew I was in the right place --- Thank you so so much. I am writing this all down. lol

We're actually skipping Disney Parks -*gasp* I know. We've been to many times and like I said theyre finally old enough to visit US & IOA!!! plus we're visiting going to Discovery Cove and sister parks and other parts of FL. But we'll be back when Toy Story Land is complete!!!

Thank you will do!!!

and they aren't meant for us "pooh sized" folks.

Not totally accurate.

I am definitely "Shrek" sized and I fit on every ride in the parks.

Some may be be tighter than others for some folk but lots of larger folk fit the rides too. Just wanted to clarify in case anyone who is larger worries they won't be able to ride anything.

There are test seats outside the rides folks may have issues on.

Excellent point! Not all "pooh" sizes are the same and yes they will have test seats. Except for the Minons ride. That I was escorted off of and asked to sit in the front row which is stationary.

Not only test ride seats, but FJ for example, the people guide you to sit on the outside of the ride vehicle, so you can be a little more comfortable if you're "Pooh" sized.

To all of you awesome folks! ... I've decided to do one park each day. As a first timer I'd like to take it all in even if we're lolly-gagging. As I'm researchng and finding more and more cool rides, I rather not feel rushed to visit another park. Next trip I'll know exactly what is what and decide to do park to park. Thanks to you all.

They truly are great parks. Excellent decision! Take your time and enjoy!
