United States Achievement Academy???

Has anyone ever heard of the United States Achievement Academy – National Mathematics Award? My daughter brought home an envelope with some information about this organization. She received it from her teacher and was really excited about it and thought that she had earned some kind of award or scholarship for being an all A student. Well I looked at it, the front page, and it sounds good with all kinds of congrats and what an honor phrases. Well as soon as I turned to the next page there it is….the space where you put your credit card #. As soon as I saw it I was suspicious, I thought maybe it was some kind of scam.

Has anyone else ever seen one of these letters or anything like it? It says you can pay anywhere between $15.00 and $104.00 for some kind of personalized biography page in a yearbook. And that with this you will be eligible for educational cash grants and awards. Since when do you have to pay to be eligible for grants? Isn’t that kind of redundant? Any my other question, to the teacher, is how did they get my child’s name?

I’m confused as to what this is all about. All this and she’s not even in HS yet.

Thanks CF, the second link was really helpful, I was at work while I was looking over the paper and couldn't google. I kinda figured that it was a scam to get money. Now I just need to email the teacher to find out how they got my child's name in the first place.

Basically anyhting you have to pay for to get your name listed is a scam - and it's an old one at that. My great-grandfather, who graduated from Harvard a long, long time ago (1890's) is listed in their "who's who book" and he paid to get in it, LOL!
