Policy states one carry on item with ______dimensions along with personal item such as laptop bag. Does personal item also mean such as tote bag or purse? Nothing huge. Just tote size bag that woman would use as purse/tote during travel.

It means something that can go under the seat in front of you. Large purse, smaller backpack, tote bag, etc.

Yep, bumbershoot has it right....

My wife carries some monster-size bag, the type you see women take to the shore for a day on the beach....something you could fit a microwave and a blender in (I may be exaggerating a bit) as well as her regular carry-on suitcase and never has a problem as long as she is able to stuff it under the seat in front of her (and it all has to fit, no hanging out).

I'm a bit embarrassed by the size (and color) of the thing, but hey, it works (almost like getting a second carry-on suitcase)....

You know, it's hard to remember....we don't fly together much and when she brings that big bag, I try to act like I am not traveling with her, but I think she also might carry on her regular purse, which is also on a strap over her shoulder, but, of course, much smaller....don't hold me to that purse part though....maybe she stuffs it in that tote?

Anyway the tote looks like below, except maybe even a bit larger :headache::

My wife definitely puts her purse in her tote bag for security and boarding, then "redeploys" once we're on board.

:)

Heck, DS does this. He has his "satchel" bag that holds his DS and SIM-free "phone". Puts that in his backpack that will go under the seat (contains snacks, Jedi or wizarding gear when he feels like dressing up for a WDW/Uni trip, books, and various other things) while we go through security, then once on the plane he takes it out. DH does it too, in a similar way, actually.

I travel a lot for work, and I usually bring one rolling bag, and one backpack. I also carry a purse, so I just stuff the purse into the backpack before I go through security, and keep it there until after we land. The backpack fits snugly under the seat. When I go to Orlando, it's as a family of 5. We only bring one roller bag that has medications, and other essentials, and everybody else has a backpack with 24 hours change of clothes in it.
