United Airbus A320 Question!

I'm trying to find the under-seat dimension for a United Airbus A320, and was hoping someone knew what they were or if they are listed online somewhere.

I want to make sure whatever bag I use for my personal bag will fit under the seat. I am planning on filling it with items I don't want out of my site, so it will probably my DSLR with 2 lenses, possibly a flash, (possibly in a small photo bag within the personal bag) my point and shoot camera, iPad and probably a few cables chargers, etc.

I know that it varies, depending on which seat you have. We have a party of 4 with a window, middle and two isle seats, so we may be able to do a little maneuvering if needed.

I currently have two bags that I think are two big. One is 18 x 12 x 9 and the other is 16 x 10 x 6. I'll probably end up buying a new bag, but don't want to get one that will not fit the height of the seat.

Any help would be appreciated.

I think the bags you are describing are too large to meet the description of "personal item".

I agree with the above poster. Both of these bags will be hard to fit under a seat as they are so large, especially under an aisle seat, where neither should fit. You may be able to cram the 16" bag under a middle seat, but you aren't going to have much room for feet.

I don't know of any web sites which state under seat measurements, which can vary greatly depending on plane configuration.

You need to get a smaller bag for personal items, unless this is your only carry-on, then just put these in the overhead bin. They will be perfectly safe there; no need to look at them the whole flight.

Thanks, I agree that the bags I listed are too big, I actually meant to write too large instead of not ideal. I need to look through my bags a little more or check out what my parent have next time I visit, but I think I need to get a new bag. But because of that I don't want to end up getting a bag that's 7" high and the seat is only 6" of clearance.

I will also be bringing on a carryon with me so I want to make sure the personal bag fits under the seat. I don't want to be one of those people who puts everything they bring in the overhead bin. Also, I wouldn't be looking at them the whole flight, but I would feel more secure having $2000+ worth of electronics in front of me, under a seat.

I agree, they are too large, not even sure why I listed the first bag, they were just two bags I had laying around. I'm also aware that United site states one personal item such as a briefcase, garment bag, laptop computer, purse or small backpack. but that is still vague. Also doing a quick search a briefcase is roughly 18" x 13" x 4". So, is it the height of the seat that I should be more concerned about our is it the width and length.

I guess that I would just feel more comfortable knowing that my bag, whatever it ends up being, will fit under my seat. Some or the other airlines list sizes or # of inches you can not exceed, which are very useful to know.

When I have had problems in the past, it has been the height where my bag won't fit under the seat.

Doing a quick Google search, I did find a guide to United's AirBus 320:

It notes 10" height under seats in economy.

The area is just not very big and with all that equipment I would doubt all that stuff (not even in a bag) would fit under a seat. I regularly carry several thousand in computer equipment and I just put it in the overhead bin. Instead of putting it directly above you, put it directly across from you so that when you are seated you can see into the bin if someone were to open the bin. I am also not a fan of delicate electronics on the floor. On more than one occasion I have seen full drinks come pouring down from the back of the plane getting everything in its way wet.

The RS flight bag should be okay for under seat storage, but I would just pull out the ipad and place it in the seat back pocket and leave the rest in the overhead bin away from drinks and messes. Sounds like you will be travelling with a posse so put all of your family's belonging in one bin and then shut the bin since it will be full.

Thanks, will give that a try if it's possible. The flight is in June and the economy section only had about a dozen seats left when I looked a few days ago. Also I think United loads the plane from window seats, then middle, then isles (me), so there may not be much of a choice for overhead storage. Now I just have to hope that the two seats next to me continue to stay open!

I'm the fifth wheel (or babysitter) in the bunch and am going with my brother, his wife and there two daughters (4-1/2, 1-1/2).

Check out the Lowepro camera bags - we have the MicroTrekker 200 backpack that fits perfectly under the seat. Ours doesn't have room for a laptop, however they do offer bags/backpacks that have room for both your DSLR and laptop that I do believe will fit under the seat - one is the CompuTrekker. Unfortunately they are not cheap, but they do provide excellent protection.

If I were in the market I would look into that bag, but I already have a lowepro Flipside 300 which is a little bit big for a personal bag. Also, backpacks and hot weather don't go together for me. I just can't stand having a sweaty back where the backpack is hanging.
