Unique Baby Girls names??

but let me quote my husband. When picking out baby names he makes me stick with traditional spelling and names because "you don't want to take him to disney and them not have any pencils with his name on it." Is that crazy or what so our son is named Connor and he has been to Disney 3 times and never got a pencil he was interested in other things. ha-ha

That's too funny especially since my name is Wendy, just like a DISNEY character and only once have I found a keychain in Disney with my name (I also got one as a gift about 6 years ago), and no pins either, I had to get the two I have engraved!!!

Personally, I think that people are forced to have to tell people how to pronounce it because people cannot even pronounce last names correctly! Does not matter how it is spelled!

I don't know...When was the last time you had to be told how to pronounce Christine, Susan, Chloe, Oliva, Hannah, Sophia, Emma, Daisy, Payton, Lauren, Cassidy, Maggie, Abbey, Wendy, Miranda, Cynthia, Sarah, Laura, Ally, Anna, Madeline, Jillian, Grace, Paulina, Ashlyn, Madison, Claire, Tara, Morgan, Paige, Reagan, Autumn, Amber, McKenzie, Rebecca, Janey, Carlie, Delanie, Fiona, Misty, Jenna, Caroline, Sydney, Ryleigh, Hunter, Carson, Gabriella, Isabelle, Kelsey, Gretchen, Lilli, Cara, Zoe, Alexa, Audrey, Colleen, Mallory, Erin, Reece, Hailey, etc, etc? (All the Kindergarten girls at DS school). Granted, there are certain names that are cultural, like if you choose the actual pronunction of Caitlin or a Hawain name (grew up with a Pualani).

But I *think* Ask"WhyNot?" meant was if your name takes a lot of explanation, it might not be the wisest choice. Sometimes, a name can be too unusual. And, personally, that's find if you don't mind having to go over it again and again and again and again. And if your child won't resent you for it. ETA: Something you might not know until your kids name their child Jane or Mary or sue

Well my mothers name is Margaret and she is constantly telling people her name is not Marg or Margie. So people screw up "normal" names too!
I've always enjoyed having a very traditional irish name. It certainly is a conversation starter with people I am getting to know.
Hi..., my name is Gráinne.

We named our daughter - Tatiana! We loved the flow of the name and with our last name it sounds really wonderful. Her middle name is Rose. I still love to say it - Tatiana Rose! :) Unique, but people have heard it.

We have a Sonja and a Kona.

I like Brynn, Glynnis, Zoila, Tessa and Malia. I also like Karis.

:rotfl: People always call my husband Raymond. It's Ray. Nothing else. Just Ray. That's not mispronuciation, that's just people not paying attention--either by saying what they read or listening to what their told.

the name game is certainly fun------it is neat to have a unique name---just remember that you'll have to special order everything from keychains to pencils........my mom 39 yrs ago named me michele(with one L) which is usually how I enter any conversation with shopping over the phone, the post office, dmv etc.....but she always told me I was special!!!!!! My husband and I are proud parents to Justin Tyler
Aubrey Anne
Brenna Lynn
Ceilia Rose
and Jarred James
Whatever name you pick it will be beautiful, because it is a blessing to have a child! Good luck to you and your family!!!!!

Just FYI, "Connor" traditionally only has one N when used as a given name. In Ireland, you would only see the double N version as a surname.

There are quite a few misspelled "irish" names through this thread. I think when they became trendy people just assumed the spellings they were told were correct or decided not to change them to the proper spelling as they were too difficult to pronounce.
A friend of mine has a Connor. I asked her if it was a family name and she replied that they wanted an irish first name to reflect her husband's background. Well she wasn't too pleased to learn that they had unknowingly added the extra "n" (my brother is Conor so I had noticed it right away). I have since learned to keep my mouth shut.

I like the name Severine, Mia, Alexandra (not so unusual), Viola, Anja and Angelique.

While I've seen "Ava" on this list a gazillion times (yes, I read all 27 pages of posts), I did not see my daughter's name: Eva!

Eva is pronounced with a long E (Eevuh), but I can't tell you how many people try to make it more complicated than it is by calling her 'Ava' or even 'Eva' with a short e (sounds like evuh - yuck!). I almost never correct people whom she'll never see again, but she corrects them every time with her 4 1/2 year old big bad attitude. (Oh, and Eva's middle name is Liana....so Eva Liana.)

Had my sons been born girls, they would have been: Abigail Sophie (he's Alexander Seth) and Avery Hope (he's Noah Ryan).

I'd love the chance to name another baby, but my husband is majorly resisting the idea!

(And I'm using his logon and ID, so shhh! don't tell!)

I have 3 girls 12,8,&4 and 2 boys 6 & almost 2 here are there names the 12 yr old is Forrest Mary Martha, 8yr old is ElsaCraig Marie, and the 4 yr old is Guienevere Vivian Maria. I will also tell the boys names 6 yr old Gregoe Navarre Lazarus, and the baby Tucker Kristoff Lee. I did not make any of the names up they are all very old names, and i did soooooo much research on each of them I had to know the meaning. People give give a strange look when i tell them there names. But we live in a very small town (School only has around 100 kids k-12th) So every time i was pregnant people couldnt wait for there names LOL. But i love long old beautiful names, probably because my name is Ann and DH is Ted. :grouphug:

I agree that spellings go all over the map when you try to transliterate from a language that doesn't use the Roman alphabet. I'm kind of touchy about it because I have a surname that was regularly butchered at Ellis Island and went on to become fairly common in the US in that form. I have the original 16th century Romanised spelling, and Americans often tell me that I am spelling it incorrectly.

I've spent my whole life having to explain about the distinction between Irish names and Irish-American names. Many of the names that Americans think of as Irish names originated in the US and are thought of as odd in Ireland. I've heard story after story about how, upon visiting Ireland for the first time, these folks were surprised to find that the locals did not know how to pronounce that "traditional" Irish name. While many of them *are* lovely-sounding names, thinking of them as Irish isn't quite right. (By contrast, I find that a lot of Irish-Americans I've met tend to think that actual Irish names, especially the feminine ones, are kind of gutteral and ugly-sounding.)

My DD's name is Julia Naomi (I loved the first one and the middle is after my DH's g'ma who passed away right before she was born)

One of my favorite things to do at work is to read the names that go on the birth certificates. There are some cute names out there, but some are just plain weird!

Some more uncommon names I've seen lately are: Aloha, Heaven & Nevaeh (Heaven backwards), Harmony, Melodia, Princess, Diamond, Lilybelle, and I'm sure others will come to mind as soon as I log off. :goodvibes

We wanted to name our daughter Marla, but everyone hated it! I didn't want a name that was too popular, but not too weird either. One day I was looking through a baby name book and I found Lilah. My husband and I knew that was it. I think she will always be the only Lilah in her class. I just think its such a pretty classic name, and everyone was so happy we didn't name her Marla! (which I still like) I also like Ava, Morgan, Shelby, Grace, and Ella.

I knew a "Princess" in high school but she always went by "Prin".

My niece's name is Julia and my favorite doll when I was a toddler (my Cabbage patch doll!) was named Naomi Annette. So, I love the name Naomi, too! :)

My Daughter's Name is Nevaeh Celeste, the one and only name my husband & I chose. Nevaeh is Heaven spelled backwards. Some family members were a little worried about the name but now they say they couldn't imagine her with any other name.
