Unfathomable: Church Massacre

Welcome to the South. Just read that the presiding judge is a racist who had used the n-word in court and wants everyone to sympathize with the shooter's family. Here's the link... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-revealed-reprimanded-using-n-word-court.html

Racist or not, he's not exactly wrong. The entire family is not responsible for Dylan's actions.

'We must find it in our heart at some point in time not only to help those that are victims but to also help his family as well.'

That flag stands for more than one thing I have been reminded, but most see it for another reason.

I am not southern but I am a student of history. That flag does stand for more than most people understand or want to admit. But with the inflammatory place we as a nation find ourselves in with interactions between "races" seeming to slide backwards, maybe it is time to put that flag to the side for awhile. Maybe replace it with the Gadsden flag?

The flag has been used by racist groups and has more or less been adopted as a symbol by some. I can understand why many are offended by it, and I agree with your post, MarcW.
I went to bed Tuesday and heard this and thought who the heck would go into a church and shoot people? Church is one of the last places you would think this would happen at. Flash-Forward to yesterday morning....

This hit all too close to hope for me...

Shelby, NC is less than 30 minutes from me and I couldn't believe he found his way to NC. As you heard the stories rolling in here about the Florist from Kings Mountain, who followed him, she's a hero in my opinion. I would love to know why he was coming to NC, makes you wonder if it was to do more killings. But in NC you heard all the breaking news and things came out locally today in the paper. The guy was spotted 5 minutes from where I am right now and I was out walking during that time. It all struck too close for me, and makes you wonder what is going on in people's heads.

I am originally from Ohio, but since I moved to the south, racism is very much a reality down here still especially at the NC border and SC. They do have the death penalty in SC, but WISH so badly we had eye for an eye to punish him that same way. I laughed at him having a bond hearing too, I was like you have to be kidding me!

The suspect has a Constitutional right to a bond hearing, which was before a magistrate judge, who is only authorized to consider bond for a non-capital charge (possession of the weapon during the crime). The bond on that charge was set at $1 million, which is unheard of just about anywhere on that charge alone (which as I noted earlier, is the only charge subject of this bond hearing). The bond hearing was essentially a formality but one that is part of due process afforded to suspects under the Constitution.

FWIW, I have friends who have lived in different parts of the country and would be the object of the racism you note, and they said they choose to live in the South because it is so friendly.

I listen to a lot of bond court, and I hear about million dollar bonds all the time

I read the quote where he used the offensive word. I have heard many southern people both black and white say the same thing. Except instead of redneck they say cracker or white trash. Doesn't make it right but it doesn't necessarily make him a racist. I wouldn't judge a man on one ambiguous sentence no matter what his skin tone. I know that word makes me flinch but I'm sure the judge hears it every day in his court room and not from the lips of white racists.

As for the shooters family being victims too. I can understand that. I remember hearing some of the horrible details about the Green River Killer and thanking God I wasn't his wife or children.

The shooter's sister turned him in didn't she? Somehow I don't think that is an example of approval.

I've never heard of a million dollar bond for a charge of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, but it really doesn't matter, since he will not be granted bond on the 9 murder charges.

That may be true, I was just reading up on this because a friend posted a pretty inflammatory thing about the Rebel Flag. While some may have adopted it, the official flag of the KKK etc...is our Stars & Stripes. Some also add the Christian flag into the mix (aaryan nation) which is horrific to me personally.

The confederate flag did not make this young man do this nor did being southern. Don't make this a southern thing.

The vast, vast majority of southern people are like the victims families. Forgiving, faithful and love filled. Are there also racist? Yes, just like anywhere else.

I heard a report that it was his father and his uncle that called the police when they saw the picture on TV from the church.

Thank you. If people think Southerners are like this cold blooded killer, he wins. I won't give that victory to him, and I'm afraid others will.

There will always be ignorant and prejudiced people in this world. I'd rather FOCUS on my actions and behavior, than REACT to an agitator. Some may learn a thing or two, and evolve. Others ,will still live within their narrow little minds and stay in their hate-filled world.

I don't want to start anything but I'm curious if there has been an explanation why the confederate flag wasn't lowered with the others? Is it on the same building?

Someone from South Carolina will know better but I don't think the confederate flag flies with over the capital with the state flag. I think it is part of a memorial statue on a different part of the grounds. Kind of a way of displaying it without it being an official flag.

I have great hope that this sad sad act of racism and violence will actually bring people together, in SC and everywhere in America.

Charleston is handling it very well. Just like they handled the incident where the cop shot the black man in the back.

The murderer's intention was to cause more division. I'm hopeful that it will have the exact opposite effect.

PS I'm afraid to ask this out loud, for fear it will jinx the subject, but were is Rev Al? Did they ask him to stay away?
Oh my goodness, I just did a search to see what the Rev was up to and good news!
But today, as he calls for a National Day of Prayer and Healing,

Can you imagine if all he asks for is prayer to unite the country???? How awesome would that be!

I wonder if it wasn't lowered because it isn't an official flag. I'm assuming the one in the picture under the American flag is the State flag.

They said it would take an act of the legislature to bring it to half mast. I say, then go ahead and act.

It's part of a memorial, near the Confederate Soldier Monument. The flag is fixed, not on pulleys.
