Just curious about this. If someone gets unemployment and say they are eligible for like $500 a week. Do they get the entire $500 in their check and pay taxes on it later at tax time? Or do they take taxes right off the $500 so the check is less now but taxes are deducted like a regular paycheck?

It may vary from state to state; but here in PA you have the option of receiving it all or having 10% withheld for Federal taxes. No state taxes in PA on UC benefits.

In MA you can opt to have taxes taken out each week, or have no taxes taken and pay (or your refund is lower) at tax filing season. It really depends on how your state handles it.

Florida is the same way. You can opt to have taxes withheld.

in California and Connecticut it is a option to have taxes taken out for Federal and State . It is a question on each weekly (bi-weekly) questionaire . do you want to have taxes taken out . yes or no . you can change it if you wish at anytime .

Unemployment is taxable on your federal taxes and varies by state. You can opt to have taxes taken out before your receive the check.

In NY I opted to take out state and federal taxes - on the options when you sign up
Rather do it now than later
My SS# is also on the form - so they know my rate from my paychecks
