Hi,

I'm confused about trading out. I know many have the opinion that trading out is not a good use of DVC points.

Here is what is confusing to me. In the World passport part of the guide it says that the points needed is 120 something (128?) for a low season for a one bedroom.

So I am getting this correctly? If I wanted a week in a one bedroom at Club Intrawest Vancouver in a low season I would only have to give up 120 something points plus the $75 fee and wait for availability.

Am I missing something? Is that point chart for a week's stay in the WPC part of the guide for all WPC locations?

I am especially interested in Club Intrawest but interested in understanding the point chart for all WP locations.

Thank you.

Hi,

...trading out...
Your understanding is correct. Those who prefer not to trade feel that with a bit more work they can get even more value from their points. They do this by using strategies such as renting the points and using cash, buying a second less-expensive timeshare and trading its points instead, or renting timeshare or condo space directly from another location's owner.

Others don't wish to get involved in those complications, preferring the security and simplicty of trading through Member Services.

Your basic understanding is correct. It would be 124 points for low season and 144 for mid season. Looking at the II info, I'd expect May and late Sept to mid December to be low excluding Thanksgiving. Summer to early Sept will likely be high season. The rest likely mid season other than Xmas may be high.

DVC CAN be a good use to trade for certain things, but usually not for low season options. See what you could rent there for using cash. Look for a CI member to do a direct exchange with. And while it's likely you'd get low season here, it's unlikely you'd get high season.

There are a ton of units for this fall and next April. Email me directly and I can make a couple of other suggestions for you.

But I can get a one bedroom low season trading out in the WPC at 124 points low season but not get a one bedroom for that point spread at DVC itself....

?????????????????

I didn't buy DVC to trade out. I love the DVC properties. I am just trying to understand. And asking in generalities for the future.

So even though I can get a CI one bedroom for less points than my own DVC one bedroom there are still better options?

It can't be CI itself (very high point allowances and high $$$$$ into the program)

My "cash" available for high end trips is in my DVC and maintenance.......

All I can think of it there are TSs that trade into II or CI with a similar points charts that cost less than DVC. And the other option you had making a trade independent of DVC.... one outside resort for DVC. Hey but then I still don't get it because I am spending minimum 160 points for getting them a one bedroom at Disney not 124 through the WPC..

Oh boy. Enough thinking for one day.

IMO, this is one of the common misperceptions of DVC members. Remember that DVC is worth what it is based on location. If the DVC resorts were in Orlando but not on property and all else were the same, DVC points would be worth at most half to two thirds what they are currently. Think HH and VB without having the WDW connection. The fact your getting a nice unit at a nice resort does not mean it has equal value. Given the trading set up and uncertainties associated, trading is a gamble at best. Let me illustrate it this way. Say you traded a week at DVC for another week at DVC and since you were an exchanger, you got the dumpster view or similar. You paid the exchange fee, $129-149 with II now, more with RCI, for the same resort likely for less considerations than if you'd have just used your week. There certainly are trades that would be a great value using DVC however you need the combination of great resort and peak season to generate that situation. Where you draw the line between what is a value to you may be different than where I'd draw the line.

CI trades mostly with RCI now and as such RCI will likely get the majority of the Tremblant deposits but II still seems to get quite a number. I do not like the CI points system mainly because they don't have a home resort priority. Think if every DVC member were trying for one of the 8 BWV GV units at 11 months out. Not all timeshare resorts use points and many times the best values are in the ones that do not work with points. For trading to CI for off season, many cheaper options are available. RCI points may be the best one for many.

Lets say for example I wanted to go to Quebec in April and needed a 2 BR. Since I only have II, I could start searching up 2 two years out. And since I know based on previous searches that I can get that resort during the times I mentioned above plus April using my weakest and cheapest trader; that's what I would try for. I can even get a 2 BR using a studio. Thus if I wanted to go next April and get a 2 BR, I could search online with my Aruba studio. Total cost for the 2 BR about $500. Of course this exact method only works if you check the system frequently or there is an over abundance for when you want to go. But there are other methods for similar "savings".

There's no question it good to have the option of exchanging. However, the system has much more potential than the DVC members can currently access.
