Hi,

I am a new DVC owner and need help understanding the following scenario:

1. Currently, I have 150 Points for February 2020 Use Year and I will be getting another set of 150 in February 2021
2. On Sunday, June 7th, 2020 I will book a reservation at my home resort for a trip occurring on April 1st, 2021 consisting of 150 points

So, here are my questions

1. Will DVC use my points from my February 2020 allotment to book this trip?
2. What would happen to my points if I cancelled the trip more than 31 days out; say on February 15th, 2021?
3. I'm thinking if I were to lose the points, I should just bank the 2020 points before booking the reservation?

Thanks!

Couple things that new members need to know:

All points use is based on the date of stay and the use year applicable to that date, not when you make the reservation.

Points are deposited 3 years in advance. So your account has 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 ( look under my vacation points online). Some think they have to wait for points to “deposit”.

1. April 2021 will be in your 2021 use year. You need to bank the 2020 first to use them for this stay.

2. Your banked 2020 will remain in 2021.

3. You have to bank to use for a stay before 2/1/2021.

A few things- if you are booking for an April 1 2021 trip, you can book today as long as it's your home resort (you can book 11 months before your trip; technically you could have booked May 1 2020).
Since you have 150 points in your 2020 UY, you need to bank them to use them for your April 2021 trip (an April 2021 trip will fall under your Feb 2021 UY; you will have 300 points to use for your trip). If you don't bank them you will lose them as of January 31 2021. Since you said your stay will only be 150 points, the reservation will use the banked 150 points first; always uses banked points first. If your stay is more than 150 points, it will use the 150 banked and then take any current points.
If you cancel your trip more than 31 days out, banked points will stay in your 2021 UY(currently banked points are being returned bc of the resorts being closed but assuming this goes away when resorts are fully open next month)

To use the Feb 2020 points for an April 2021 trip, you need to bank the 2020 points before you book the trip. Bank by Sept 30, your banking dead line. After you bank, the points will become usable in your 2021 UY, and will need to be used before Jan 31 2022 or they will expire. You can NOT UNBANK the points. And you can not bank them again.
If you cancel more than 30 days before the trip, your points will go back into your account as BANKED 2020 UY points

1) your Feb 2020 UY points can be used for reservations from 2/1/20 through 1/31/21. They are NOT available for the 4/1/21 trip UNLESS you bank them. Your points will need to be banked by 9/30/20.

Your Feb 2021 UY points can be used from 2/1/21 through 1/31/22.

IF you bank your 2020 points into 2021, when you make the April 2021 reservation, the banked points will be used first. This is the only way the 2020 points can be used for a reservation in your 2021 UY

2) if you cancel a reservation less than 31 days from check-in, the points used will go into a "holding" status. You still have access to the points, but those points can only be used to book a reservation within the next 60 days. (It's a rolling 60 days - not 60 days from the day of cancellation). Finding availability that close in is difficult, and often results in the points expiring before they can be used. Also, points in holding cannot be banked - assuming you're still within your banking window.

3) if you cancel the reservation more than 31 days out, the points remain available for use like normal. You will not lose them just because you cancelled the reservation. But those 2020 banked points will expire on 1/31/21 and CANNOT be banked again.

Hope this helps.

Steve

Just to add, if you make the reservation online, it will give you the option to bank as many points as you need...or all of them to complete the reservation in one process.

Or, you can bank them first, then go in and make it. If that trips get canceled, those banked points would then need to be used by Jan 31st 2022
