hello ladies!!!

I'm almost ready to start gown shopping and seeing as how I've never been married before and never even went to any of my school dances.. I have NO experience with formal wear.

what kind of undergarments do I need to wear when I go trying dresses on? do I need to wear special stuff?

I'm leaning towards a strapless or halter type dress and am small busted and smaller on top, with bigger hips, butt, and thighs. I'm a plus size girl too.

any suggestions?

I am working out though and watching what I eat.. so I'm hoping to lose a little weight before I have to actually buy a dress or at least buy it and then get it taken in after.

thanks lovely brides and brides to be!

I would suggest a strapless bra. I found most salons will provide a strapless bra for you to try on dresses with.

I recommend you buy a strapless bra that is comfortable and you can wear on your wedding day and bringing that to try on gowns. I bought a convertible bra (can be worn traditional, strapless, halter, backless, etc.) in a nude color that fit great and was comfortable and brought it with me to try on. I'm glad I did because the bridal boutique I went to did not have a bra that would fit me (I'm small busted) and also then I knew for sure that I could wear that bra with my gown. Good Luck!

I know there a lot of girls who head to David's Bridal, and you are given a strapless bra and slip to try on dresses with. I ended up purchasing a dress there and I remember the bra was $79, which you can easily find one cheaper somewhere else. I went ahead and purchased it since it was practically like a corset/strapless bra combo. It helped slim me down a bit more than a regular strapless bra would. :)

HTH!

My dress shop also provided undergarments to try on dresses with. I chose to wear my dress with a type of corset with a strapless built in bra. It gave me better posture, and sinched in my waist a bit.

I bought a corset at Frederick's of Hollywood that cinched me in and pushed me up. Worked wonderfully.

I'm about to go dress shopping and I was wondering the same thing.

Now a friend of mine went to David's and had the corset and it caused her to bruise on her sides. At her reception, it was so tight it was almost making her sick! :confused3 Has anyone else ahd a problem like this???

It sounds like the corset was too small for her. I had some one in the Nordstom lingerie department help fit it to me. The strange thing is, that your regular bra size will not be the same for the corset.

um, not all brides *have* to wear a corset do they? I'm just the type of girl who's VERY into comfort and can't imagine myself being all cinched in and not able to breath on a hot september day in florida. :sad2:

I'm already a warm blooded person anyway and am worried a bit about being too hot in my big dress .. not to mention adding some device that will suck me in and make me feel like I'm going to pass out! lol

is there any kind of slimmer or smoother out there that wouldn't be too restrictive yet still provide support? :confused3

You don't have to wear a corset. I think that most brides like strapless bras. And I definately understand about not wanting to wear something restrictive during really hot weather.

I'm with you! I was SO comfortable on my wedding day. My strapless bra was fine (as fine as one of those can be), and I wore my regular everyday undies. No pantyhose, nothing "sucking" me in, I could not have handled that! I wanted to be as comfortable as possible! If you feel you need some "sucking in" try some of the nicer department stores lingerie departments, they have all sorts of undergarments that won't be too uncomfortable. A corset can be fine, but you have to be properly fitted. Also, the style dress you choose can cover any areas you don't feel as confident about.

Im with others-- Davids Bridal does give you stuff.....

Good thing too-- I had just come from work (real estate) -- and that day I had a black bra on, and black underwear... lol-- not quite fitting for the occasion.. good luck!

When I first when in to try on gowns, I didn't bting a bra. I sheepishly told the store owner and she laughed saying at leats I wore underwear . . . I guess a lot of brides try gowns on in their birthday suites.
My salon offered me one, however I will not be wearing a bra/corset at this time. I really don't wan't too feel constricted and I seem to be getting more cleavage with my gown then I counted on! I have been told they can build in a bra with/without padding for about $60 or so. However, in three weeks I may change my minf about the corset!
Have fun!

O.T. Did anyone else feel a bit awkward trying on gowns? Where I went they had you strip down to your underwear (in my case, no bra) and they basically shoved gowns on me! I am a very bashful person and hate being naked when I am alone in my house so this was hard for me to get use to! In fact, I really haven't gotten use to it yet!!!!:(
Sorry to go off topic, but am I the only one who felt like this?

I felt a tad bit that way. The lady who was helping me-- I was her first real 'bride'.. she was doing customer service before actually running the floor. So she probobly was nervous too. I laughed a lot of my nervousness off with her. I wasnt too fond of skinnying now to my shibbys in front of a stranger... nor was i comfortable with her getting me dressed- but oh well! They see girls all shapes and sizes everyday.

I only had help the day i bought my dress (I bought the first one i tried on... just knew it was the one).

I brought my mom back the additional times for alteration appts to have her help me.
