under 70mm lens for rebel xt

due to my unfortunate 28-135 episode , i will have only the kit lens and 50mm 1.8 under 70mm( when my new 70-200 f4 comes ) i saw a couple with good reviews

tokina 28-70 f2.8 and tamron 28-75 f2.8 ( yes, i am actually not a "canon only girl" any longer )

so does any one know how these two would stack up IQ( in other words, other than faster speed) with the 18-55 kit lens? for some reason i can never find reviews of that one on the more "serious" photo sites

i want to buy a ultra wide some day fairly soon so i don't want to spend a ton for basically 28-under 50 mm if it's close to the kit. anyone used either? or any thoughts on how to go from here?

right now my budget is tapped due to flash and new lens so it's gotta be cheap if i get it now( probably used if i can find it) but i don't want a lens that is rated as "good" mostly cause it's "cheap", i would rather wait and get a good lens period..if that makes sense

Not specific lens info, but in my opinion the missing coverage between 55-70mm is not that big of a deal. With one of the two lenses, you can always take a few steps back or forward. This does not work 100% of the time, but if you are willing to give it up, your options open up more.

i was more thinking if the quality of the lenses i mentioned would be comparable or if the kits lens was much worse. otherwise it's not really worth it to me to get something for that range esp. since i want to get some thing wider any way

I just picked up the Tamron 17-50 2.8 and am very pleased with it. I haven;t really had a chance to get out and take any shots worth posting but the test shots very good sharpness and excellent color rendition even at 2.8. And the bokeh is extremely smooth.

I would expect that the 28-70 is optically very similar.

I've been using the Sigma 24-70 2.8 for about 5 months now and have been very happy with it. I believe the Tammy and Sigma are about par when it comes to IQ. The Sigma is a bit wider on the wide end (24mm vs. 28mm), and has a build quality that some people have described as "tank-like." This build quality might be a double edged sword, as others have complained it was too heavy for them, and they preferred the weight of the Tammy.

Either way, I think you are making a good choice here.

I've heard very good things about the Tamron. For some good image samples check out this site. They don't have any of the Tokina, but do have some of the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8. At least just to give you some idea of its performance image wise.

Afaik canon's 18-55 is an offshoot of their 22-55, which was not known for it's great image quality. However, the 18-55 is not bad if you can stop it down to f/8. The Canon Forum has a thread on photos made with this lens and some of them are surprisingly good.

I would use it for now and save up for a real wide angle, like the 10-22.

thanks, i was trying to compare them to the kit lens which i can't find a review of...i know some sites apply a number rating to the lenses so i thought if they were close it would help me know...if that makes sense... i did find a bunch of 18-55 photos in the archives list so that renewed my faith in that lens

How about the 17-40mm f/4L ? It's $610 right now at B&H after a $45 rebate. That will get you started down the slippery slope of "L" glass, of which there is no return.

The spot I chose was off the main path, in a fenced path area (the gate was open). I was in a corner, crouched way down, and might have looked like I was about to go over to the pond for a swim (with all that camera gear?).

I waited for the monorail maybe five minutes while security walked by on the main path about three times and made sure I knew they were watching, but never approached me to ask just what I was doing.

If I told them I was waiting for the right color monorail they might have taken me in for observation!

Canon makes some good products but yours and my experiences with their service departments have not been so good. My 24-105 has been back twice and the last time they wanted the camera body so they could adjust it also. I said "no, the camera body works just fine with all my other lenses and I am not sending it in, just fix the 24-105".

It's a shame that Canon does not back up their products better than they do. For what we pay we certainly deserve great service. The poor service you got for your 28-135 is inexcusable and really makes me wonder about staying with Canon lenses exclusively.

Good luck with your 70-200 f/4, I know of two of them that appear to be flawless. It's definitely my sharpest lens.

i just saw that one...i could do that and then just get a prime if i want ultra wide( unless they are huge money)..i told my husband if i got the 17-40, plus maybe a prime ultra wide...that would be all the lenses i would need for a long long long time, well except for a teleconverter. he just looked at me like he had heard that one before, rats he's wising up to my evil plan

you know i was just saying that to my husband...they said the same thing to me, if it doesn't work send it back with camera...i really can not believe they intend a lens to be as bad as the one they sent back "fixed" so they must have messed it up but you'd think they would stick it on a body and check it after "repair" before they mailed it out . so they really think I'll send the body in so they can fool around with that as well? don't think so.

i don't know, you basically pay more for the "canon" lens but still have no guarantee of good quality or repair even under warranty. i might as well buy a 3rd party that is rated well and replace it if it goes bad. Dodd camera lens prices are just slightly higher than online( and the one in Cleveland seems to be really well stocked so it's worth the 45 min drive) so i figure if i get a third party, I'll just try it out before hand and hope i can tell pre-purchase. at least i can take it back easier if i need to

i had horrendous problems with customer service with a canon printer that literally took me 2 yrs to get replaced when it didn't work right from the moment we took it out of the box but i hoped it was just that branch of canon. they strung me along for a yr. blaming it on everything from the full moon to crop circles and then tried to charge me when the warranty was over...that conversation was not a happy one for sure it almost kept me from buying the rebel it was so much of a headache ...

don't know what the problem is and the goofs keep sending me emails to ask if "i'm happy with their customer service" wait till they send the one to follow up on this "repair"

both the tamron 28-75 2.8 and the sigma 24-70 2.8 have been given high marks on potn and other sites. one of my good mates in NZ has the tamron and he loves it.

and as you know there are lots of people who have the 17-40 4.0L. it's a fine lens and is generally very sharp. its size and weight are favourable for a walk around lens and the focal length on your 1.6x body is extremely versatile. don't feel you will need to fill the range between the 40 and the 70 - especially since you have your nifty fifty.

of course you can never have enough lenses....
