Hi everyone, this is my first post and I have a question...

Should we go to WDW for the first time when our youngest is under 3 or when she is over 4? We are considering under 3 (but very close to it) b/c she will still be free (tickets and meal plan), right? And we would still be able to get a budget hotel since she is under 3, right?

And we are thinking over 4 (probably 4.5) b/c she will be able to do more things like the kids clubs etc. But we would then have to buy her tickets, food and get a more expensive hotel to accomidate 5. But, she would not be taking naps anymore and we wouldn't need a stroller at this point.

Our other 2 children will be 5 and 6.5 or 6.5 and 8 at those times.

What are your thoughts?
Thanks so much, Jackie

I just wanted to clarify that your two year old would be free, no cost for tickets or room but you wouldn't get a free meal plan. The under three crowd only can eat off of your plate for free. If you wanted to buy them their own meal you would have to pay OOP.

We have been twice with 3 kids. The first trip was when DD was almost 3 and she was free!! The other 2 were 5.5 and just turned 7. We brought a stroller from home and usually rented a double one for the other 2 becasue of ALL the walking. The older 2 remember the trip but the youngest has no memory of the trip. However, she loved the park and nap time was never an issue becasue we all needed to rest everyday!!

We went again when the kids were 5.5, almost 8 and 10.5. Again we brought a stroller and usually rented (or found) a stroller so they could make it longer at the park. All 3 kids loved this trip and remember it well. All 3 kids napped/rested everyday (So did mom and Dad).

I say go now while one is free and then go 2 years later!!

Hi, welcome to DIS ~

Personally, I'd go before she turns 3 for the reasons you listed. My kids aren't thrill riders, so they've basically done the same rides at age (almost) 3 and over 4. And, yes, you can't beat that huge savings when they are just under age 3 because they don't need tickets and they also ate free at all the character meals. I do believe you can stay in any hotel since the one child is under 3. Plus, I'm sure your 2 older kids want to go to WDW sooner rather than later!

Have fun!

Go before she turns three. You'll probably want to go again when she is four anyway!

Here are the benefits:

Under threes do not need tickets

You will be considered a family of four plus one infant for hotel purposes. That means you can stay anywhere onsite. Once you are officially a family of five (in Disney-speak for hotel occupancy), you have to stay at least at a moderate resort (POR plus a trundle), a Deluxe, the All Star Family Suites or the Ft. Wilderness cabins or campground (or off-site). You have so many more options until your littlest turns three.

Buffets and family-style restaurants are free for those under three. If you order from a menu, you would have to pay for any items you order for your two year old. But the character meals are family style or buffet, so you don't pay anything for your littlest.

You almost certainly will still need a stroller for your youngest even if she is 4 - WDW is a LOT of walking! You might even consider a double stroller and letting your older children take turns riding in the extra seat. You also might want to take breaks during the day to let the other kids rest or swim. If not, your littlest can nap in the stroller if necessary.

Welcome to the DIS! :welcome:

If it is a buffet or family style meal, under threes can have their own plates and eat as much as they would like. It is only for counter service or menu-based table service that the OP would have to pay out of pocket for items for their two year old.

OP, if you choose to get the dining plan, you would not have credits for your youngest if she is still under three, but you can share counter service meals and entrees at table service restaurants. You would have to pay for drinks for your DD2 if you ate a restaurant where you order off the menu. At buffets and table service restaurants, the drinks would be included and she could eat anything she wanted for free.

If the youngest turning 3 will make you a family of 5, I'd go when she's still 2.

We went when DD was 2 years 10 months. She had a great time. The kids clubs are very expensive, so we didn't mind not being able to do that. We took the kids there once she turned 4.

Even though DD didn't get dining plan credits, with 2 adults and 1 child getting meals we had enough to share in most cases. You get a little less now than the times we went, but it still should work out well if you've got 4 meals for 5 people and don't mind sharing.

Thank you all for your quick replies. I don't know what I was thinking when I said we wouldn't need a stroller b/c my almost 4yo right now still always tuckers out and wants to ride in the stroller.

We would plan on getting the meal plan (and that's what I meant about not having to buy her one). Do you all think the deluxe meal plan is a good idea? We like to eat a decent breakfast and the regular meal plan only has 2 full meals. How many buffet or family style restaurants are there?

For the family of 4 plus an infant (in hotel terms) do they provide anything for the 5th person, like a rollaway? I don't think she will still be in a crib, and I know she wouldn't be able to fit in a pack-n-play.

Again, thanks for reading and answering all my questions ~Jackie

We have done the dining plan before, but not the deluxe plan. The deluxe plan is for three sit-down meals per day. That is a lot of food and a lot of time! We generally only do one table service meal per day because a character meal can take 1 1/2 hours or so if there are several characters to see. It depends how your family likes to eat. We generally eat breakfast in our room (cereal, yogurt, granola bars, etc.) , although I have two character breakfasts planned for our next trip. We have counter service for lunch or dinner and a table service meal for the other meal. It just depends how you like to eat. Some meals count as two table service credits - CRT, Hoop De Doo, some signature restaurants that you might not do with younger kids anyway (Jiko comes to mind). You can look at menus on allears.net and kind of decide where you'd like to eat, then figure out how many credits you would need.

One caution - doing the deluxe plan gives you three table service credits per day, but it doesn't guarantee availability. You still need to call for ADRs, and depending on the time of year, you might find it hard to get ADRs in the places you want to be. For example, you might plan a day at MK from opening to closing. On the deluxe plan, you are allocated three TS credits per person per day. It might use up a lot of your time to eat three TS meals at MK, even if you could find three places you wanted to eat. If you are going at a time of year when the parks close early, you might not want to spend all that time eating. It's a personal preference based on whether you would rather grab hot dogs for lunch or sit-down for your meals.

As far as the bedding, POR Alligator Bayou section has trundle beds - I don't know if they would guarantee that section if you didn't have five people over the age of three. Many deluxe resorts have a day bed that could sleep a fifth (even an adult). Some people here bring a twin air mattress (if they have kids that won't sleep together, for example) - it is OK to do this as long as you are not over occupancy limits and you bring your own bedding. I think some resorts have rollaways, but I think there is a fee for that. Depending on the length of your trip, it might be cheaper to buy an air mattress (unless you are flying).

Here is an older thread about cots - it would be a good idea to ask when you make your reservation if you can guarantee one and how much:
