Uncertainty about working Monday

Those that work, will get paid eventually. Even those that don't work will probably get paid eventually. (during the last shut downs they added those costs into the budget) so I've never understood the point of shutting down, since the same money is spent anyway.
Several of the congressmen tried to put in a provision to suspend pay of congress while this happened, but that was shown to be unconstitutional so it didn't go anywhere.

Actually it does make sense. The budget hasn't been approved for it now therefore there is NO money. Once the budget is approved, however, there will be money for it. They can't be paid from a fund that doesn't exist. Once approved, it exists again.

The shutdown has nothing to do with saving money. Agencies that depend upon annual appropriations cannot spend any money unless the money has been appropriated (or assigned) to them. Without a federal budget, there are no appropriations (or money). They have been functioning under continuing resolutions. The shutdown will likely cost more money than it will save.

Once a budget is finalized, there is a chance that some agencies would have to undergo further furloughs or layoffs if their appropriations are reduced. Then the purpose of those furloughs would be to save money.

The only thing that disgusts me about the whole gov "shutdown" is the gov won't say if our service members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan will get paid.

Really? REALLY?? :mad::sad2:

Actually a bill was passed in the House to ensure military pay for the rest of the budget year. Its DOA in the Senate and received an immediate veto threat from the White House. So we already know. A shutdown means no pay for the military. Unconscionable!!

The bill that would have ensured the military got paid for the rest of the year, had some pretty interesting riders attached to it which made it unreasonable. So that leaves it back to square one, where the military will get paid, but it will be delayed. And yes, it's unconscionable.

That's really not how it was briefed to us here at DoD.

The military WILL get paid. Period. The bill that was set forth was to allow the military to get paid with no interruption or delay in paycheck. This means having the military payroll center (DFAS) remain open to process the payroll. Since there's no money/no budget...not the easiest thing to do.

Just be clear that they WILL be paid.

When were you told this? My husband was told yesterday that pay WOULD be interrupted, and Secretary of Defense Gates briefed troops in Baghdad telling them the same. He said a partial paycheck on the 15th and no paycheck until things were back up and running. They of course will get paid for all their time eventually, but we understood that it would be delayed in the event of a shutdown.

Maybe I'm not typing well.

People keep saying that the military won't be paid. Yes, they will be paid. I just said in my above post that the paycheck will be delayed because DFAS will be shut down. Many people are under the impression that the military folks won't receive pay but they will. It just might be delayed. The only people who may not get paid are the civilian federal employees. A bill for that will have to be approved by Congress.

Oh, okay. I was misunderstanding what you were saying. I thought you were saying they would receive a paycheck during the shutdown.
Frankly, I know for quite a few families the fact that they will be paid eventually is little comfort, because it won't put food on the table or pay the bills in the mean time.
The last thing our troops overseas need to worry about is whether or not their families back home have enough to get by.
I hope this whole mess clears up quickly and EVERYONE gets their paychecks on time, military and civilians both.

There will be an interruption to checks...and military will NOT be paid until after the gov is up and running again (if it shuts down).

They will be paid eventually, but if the gov shuts down, the last check for military will be today (I believe). Military wives, please correct me if I'm wrong.

My friend who is an Army wife has said they have been briefed checks will be interrupted, even for active duty.

I was just online reading about the riders attached. All I can say is UNBELIEVABLE. It's obvious that no one really cares.:guilty:

I believe our last paychecks will be on the 15th (could be wrong) and will be for 8 days pay instead of 15.

Thanks. That must have been why the 8 was sticking in my brain. :)

Not quite accurate. DFAS will still be open. The military’s pay being delayed is because the military doesn’t have the funds appropriated to them, not because DFAS is closed.

DH is a federal employee and his next pay date is next Friday. He will get paid on time for anytime worked before the shutdown, but not after.

Civilian employees who work during the shutdown will definitely be paid for time worked once the budget has passed. It is up to Congress whether they will give back pay to those employees who are furloughed.

They will be paid eventually, but not on time. That's pretty ****** to do to jr enlisted soldiers, especially those in combat areas. "Hey PVT Smith, I know you live paycheck to paycheck and you have a family to feed and you are in the middle of a battle in Afghanistan, but no pay for you for a few weeks. "

Yes...almost all of my bills are due with the mid-month check. It will only be half of a paycheck. Any of the money we put aside for our car payment(so that the second half of the month is not so tight)will have to be used to live off of. We have kids to feed, school lunches to pay, EASTER BASKETS(I know they shouldn't be important) and other things to pay for.

Even though we will continue to "get paid" through this, not having the money at this time is really going to hurt us.

Yes, It's important.

Well thank you! I said that so that I wouldn't have to put on my flame suit. LOL...it is important to me! There are things for my kids' school that I am also being asked to pay for...field day shirts...treats for their Easter parties...jeez.

I am a MESS right now...this just adds to things. G'ma is in the hospital not doing well...DH is deploying in 3 weeks...when he gets home we're moving to NY(which is TOTALLY different from FL and TX, so I'm stressed about that. Driving in the snow:scared1:)

 Go to Dollar tree for a little bit of Easter stuff and then go on post for the big easter egg hunt. I promise your kids won't notice a difference. Beans and rice a great meal stretchers and your kids can probably charge lunches at school for a bit. Hopefully you won't have to go too long.

I was reading that the government will actually lose money because of this shutdown. For example the National Parks charge fees and will lose those fees because they won't be able to operate. The employees will still get paid later on however.

It's really a silly situation.
