Unborrowing points

I have quickly learned that you need to be extremely careful when borrowing points for alternate possible reservations for the fact that they cannot be banked or undone.

Drunk on new points, I borrowed 7 more points than I needed for next year because I dropped a reservation, which means those would be lost if not used. There would be nothing i could book for 7 points and i didnt want to buy otup and book a random studio for 1 night.

When i asked members services how many points I borrowed and realized i went over, I almost fell out of of my seat when the agent asked ME if I wanted to unborrow those points when I asked what people do in this situation.

I treat my one transfer like gold and did not want to use it for this. She was able to unborrow them and put them bank in the original use year. My experience with members services is that they are very rigid with the rules. Is this generally easily given as an option if you mess up in borrowing or was I just lucky this was offered to me? This was my first time messing up with borrowing.

You were definitely lucky to get a sympathetic CM at MS who was willing to undo that transaction for you. Several years ago I had a similar situation and was very surprised the CM could/would help me. In my case they exchanged 'borrowed' points from a res I wanted to cancel over to an earlier separate res I had already made (so I could then bank the points from the cancelled res) - so that worked out well for us. But I definitely don't count on it, because my mistake was my mistake.

They sometimes give a one time exception for borrowed points or banking points after the deadline. I haven't needed to do either, so YMMV.

I had a waitlist come through so my poly went to beach club unfortunately that left 20 borrowed points and no vacation time left to use them. I was not so lucky so I have one day for rent. Yeah it’s a lesson learned when borrowing points waitlist is not your best option cause it may come through.

I would definitely not expect it. A few years ago I had a major family emergency and had to cancel a trip week of. I expected it all to go to holding (which was totally fine as I was very early in my UY and would have figured something out for them), but the cast member said to give her a minute and she was able to get approval to put all my points back in the use year and even unborrowed the few that I had borrowed (I think it was 8 total). To say I was grateful is an understatement, but it was not expected at all.

I also got a late banking last year as I had points returned from a stay after my banking deadline and they were more than willing to bank those for me since it was kind out of my hands. I did not ask for the points back - the resort gave them back after an issue.

Sorry about that.

Just wanted to point out that waitlisting and borrowing is not always bad.

It is just bad when you are waitlisting a resort that requires less points then your current reservation. If it was the opposite ie you had BCV booked and were waitlisting Poly you would have been fine assuming it was same room type to room type.

That is one advantage of owning a lower Point chart resort such as AKL, BWV, OKW or SSR that then you can book your room at 11 months and if you can't get something at 7 months you can be one of the first on the waitlist.

You were very lucky indeed! We had a situation a few years ago and though it was fewer points than 7, the CM offered to put them back. We were very appreciative.

I think one will have less luck if assuming or demanding they will be put back LOL! :rolleyes1

Thank you for posting this. This is what i have to ingrain in my head.

Must waitlist resort that requires higher points, not lower.

Must not borrow and book a bunch of things with the expectation of dropping them all if something else pops up 🤣🤣🤣
