slapping her disrespectful 18 yr. old granddaughter.:headache:

The grandmother was so upset in the video. :guilty: This link is to the initial story. You can watch the grandmother being interviewed here. http://www.wtsp.com/news/mostpop/story.aspx?storyid=130961&provider=top

This one is about the charges being dropped after a radio personality connected the grandmother with a high-profile attorney. http://www.tampabay.com/news/humani...gainst-largo-grandma-who-slapped-teen/1092557

I'm with grandma on this one! The 18 yr. old didn't really apologize to her.

wow, you know they posted her myspace page and she is on it drinking beer and has pictures of her doing so:confused3, clearly she is not 21 so why hasn't she been charged with under age drinking:mad:, She definitely needs to learn some manners, my mom would have used an extension card or what ever she could have gotten her hand on if I would have stepped out of line like that  :rotfl2:, Don't worry, I didn't turn out too bad, and I still lived to tell about it:rolleyes1

it is not illegal to disrespect someone (other than a judge).
It is illegal to assault someone, even if they are your granddaughter.
As to why they can't charge her for underage drinking, prove that there is beer in the bottle in the picture please. (you can't it could be water, it could be beer, but as long as it could be water, then it's un-convictable.

You must also remember that her parents (and probably grandparents) raised this girl to be disrespectful. it happened a long time ago...

I think charging anyone for spanking or slapping their child is just dumb. I was on the receiving end of both and, upon procreation, will do both when it is warranted. Talk back get slapped. Pretty simple.

This spanking/slapping = assault meme is beyond stupid. It would make as much sense to charge a parent with theft for taking away a toy or false imprisonment for sending them to their room. Stop telling parents how to raise their kids. If you want to use spanking as part of their punishment go ahead. If you don't fine. Neither side should be telling the other what they should do. We have survived as a species a very long time allowing parents to discipline their kids with a slap.

Thank God in the end the justice system worked and the charges were dropped. Hopefully it sets a precedent for the future that the charges won't stick. There has to be common sense applied to parenting. An open hand slap by a parental figure is not a closed fist punch with brass knuckles. A paddle to the butt is not a pipe across the shoulder blades. Pathetic.

My SIL married a guy with some lovely kids. The teen daughter called the cops on my SIL one night after they were arguing saying SIL had hit her. She had not hit her. Cops didn't arrent SIL but suggested SIL leave the house for the night.

:confused3

That little brat knew exactly what she was doing.

Marriage eventually ended. His kids were part of the problem. Always driving a wedge & getting away with it.

So granddaughter swears at Grandma -- Grandma slaps granddaughter -- granddaughter punches Grandma -- Grandma gets arrested.

It sounds like a Jerry Springer episode.

This whole story is just insane. If this family isn't living in the south now, they had to at least come from the south at one point. :sad2: Truely pathetic. (And I'm on Grandma's side)

Oh yes, all southerners go around slapping each other all day long. Excuse me, I have to go ice my cheek

Wow, really? Do you stereotype often, or is this a one time deal?

At some point you have to let go. 18 years old is no longer a child, and the "right" for a parent or grandparent to administer corporal discipline has expired. A presumably mature grandparent has for more effective means of communicating -- as we tell young children... "Use your words!"

The 18 year old has excuses for her transgressions... she's young and immature. The grandmother has no such excuses.

Grandmother loses.

While I can cheer for grandma...she did commit a physical assault. Sometimes someone being a "naughty word" (in reference to the 18yo) is deserving of a swift kick in the pants. But it really doesn't make the act of smacking them any more legal than a street fight. Just sayin'.

The "child" in question is 18. She is a legal adult. While she probably deserved what she got--it was indeed assault. But the idea of prosecuting grandma is more likely why they backed down. But if 18yo wanted to press charges, she likely could do so successfully.

Excuse me? Are you serious?

What is truly pathetic is some people's ability to disrespect an entire region of the country without having a clue what they are talking about.

As for the topic at hand: There is a huge difference in spanking a child and slapping someone across the face. I think that 18 is too old for grandma to start a confrontation of this kind with, she should have just thrown her out of the house (assuming she lives with grandma). But, even if the girl had been a younger teen, slapping her in the face would be wrong. OTOH, I don't think grandma should go to jail or anything. I think the 18 year old should be made to move or stay away and leave grandma in peace.

Actually, they're/came from MA.

From the sounds of it, this 18 year old's behavior goes beyond "young and immature". She got thrown out of her high school in Mass for her language. She turned the same language on her grandmother.

The grandparents are from NH. They're snowbirds. Sounds like the granddaughter is from Mass.

Here is NH's coverage of the issue.

Hey, Frank! On this subject, we agree!! :thumbsup2

Sorry, I don't care how disrespectful and screwed up the 18 year old is...

A person has no right to physically slap another adult.
Period.

I am not a holier-than-thou, never spank your preschooler, type of person.
I am from the South.

But, unless this girl was physically threatening to the grandmother, there is just no way in H E double-hockey sticks that it is okay for one person slap/accost another person.

This is not swatting a toddler on the legs or backside.
This is not discipline of a young child.
I think anyone who is looking at it that way is off-base.

I can guarantee you that if any parent or grandparent in my or my husband's family slapped either me, or my child (who is now 12), that would be the complete end of our relationship.

Maybe the Grandmother should get off.
I am not saying that she should be prosecuted...
Maybe it was a one-time, heat of the moment, occurance.

But, in the end, there is no way that it is ever right for anyone to slap another person, especially another adult.

As an adult, nobody, EVER, has a right to lay a hand on me except in self defense. (which, of course, would never be the case)
