Unattended Cooking??

I've read a few posts a while back about people using crock pots and counter top roasting type things. Do you all leave them unattended outside while in the parks? I really think I asked this question before, but it's been one of those weeks and I can't find that thread.

The poll on the DDP got me thinking about our meals in August, and I'm probably getting a little obsessive about it, but we love food. I figure the food will be safe if we leave a cooler of frosty cold beer nearby as a decoy

We have done this many times and not had a problem. We setup a small table right outside the door of the camper and plug the crock pot in. Keeps the heat outside as well. A few times we set something on the table (box of rags, etc) to block the Crock Pot from view, but I really don't think it was necessary.

Some folks have suggested putting a milk crate and a bungy cord(s) over the top of the crock pot to keep the four legged thieves out.

When away we leave the crockpot inside on top the metal stove cover. Since folks leave them in their $500,000 stick homes unattended, I feel comfortable leaving them in my lowly $20,000 trailer.

I used mine for several meals when we went in October. It is so very nice to have dinner mostly cooked after a long day in the park. We camp in a pop-up and look very much like the Clampets doing Disney, so we leave the crockpot outside on the table. We never had any critter problems.

The only critter problem we encountered was about our 8th day when an armadillo took up housekeeping in the brush next to us. Boy do those things stink! Had a rotten chicken smell or something. We ignored it and it was gone in the morning.

I accidently left the car door open one night. I was looking for something and had both doors open and forgot to close the other side. Well a critter managed to find a package of bagels that were in the car and probably some other things. But I wasn't too pleased with myself when I woke up to find the door open and crumbs all over my seat.

Thats better than finding a raccoon passed out on your front seat with half a bagel in one hand and a paw full of cream cheese in the other!!!

i agree, crumbs are much easier to clean up than you getting in the car with the critter and the critter messing in your car and you messing on yourself when you find it

Ummm....yep...that would be me! Decided to keep the van for an extra bedroom on long trips!

Thanks - good idea on finding a way to keep the cover on just in case. I'll probably put some butcher's twine around it (I figure that stuff should be able to take the heat and not melt or add any strange mix if it got too hot).

If I were camping up here in the great cold north, that crock pot would be more than welcome in the trailer for the extra heat. But we're figuring that having a crock pot on in the trailer in August in Florida while our little AC tries to keep up might be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Kind of like the old Steven Wright joke of putting a humidifier and a dehumidifier in the same room to watch 'em fight it out.

Speaking of critters, when we went to Yellowstone in '06, a grizzly came through the CG late at night to take advantage of the food left outside at a site about one loop away. Lots of commotion and screaming at 1:00 am. We were less than thrilled to have new folks move in two nights later in their pop-up and put all kinds of cardboard boxes of food underneath the slide that the kids were sleeping in. Luckily, I think the rangers had caught that other bear and moved it out further into the wild, or I think our neighbors would have had some interruptions that night.

We're staying in a cabin when we go to FW in November, and I was hoping to use a crock pot during the week. However, when I saw the list of appliances/utensils in the kitchen, a crock pot wasn't on the list . Because we're flying and checked in luggage is now down to 1 piece per passenger, I don't think we can take one with us. Does anyone have any suggestions for us?

if you have a ride you could buy one at wal-mart and leave it or pass it on.....you could use the oven on the lowest temp. and slow cook in it, do they have and roasting pans ? or you could buy one which ever is cheaper.....
