At all resorts, the people that check you in have a good deal of flexibility when assigning you to a room. Be sure to be nice and use their name from the moment you step up. Go ahead and ask for upgrades, you may get them!
I didn't ask (nor was I looking for) upgrades last year but got some. In July at the WL, while doing the paperwork fo my no-view room, I told the lady at the front desk that she had a lovely accent and we began chatting about the Phillippines, which is where she was from. I asked other questions too and she commented on how cute my DS 2 was--so we chatted about him a bit.
Before you know it, she says, "Let's give you bunk beds for big brother and sister." I sincerely thanked her. Then she said, "Would you rather see the lobby from your room or the fireworks of the Magic Kingdom?" To this I replied, "Are you kidding me?"
That was an example of a nice conversation turning into a fortuitous circumstance.
