Why would you take up an additional seat, when you already have one in your wheelchair/motorized trolly? Is there a safety issue?

I think that the bus driver requests that you sit in a real seat??? I've never had to use a wheelchair or scooter and hope to never have to, but this is just what I've seen.

Let's put an end to the scooter/wheelchair thing right now, it never turns out pretty on these boards.

*sigh*

I am one of these people. I apologize that the driver's load us first, but that's not my problem. If it isn't going to be a full bus when it's loaded, will standing 2 more minutes at the bus stop ruin your vacation??

I always try to catch a bus at off times of the day to avoid people like you.

1. Rude people in general take away some of the magic.

2. People who litter certainly do not contribute to the beauty of the park.

About the seat-on-a-bus issue: I do think it's polite to offer your seat to a child or elderly person. If you're blessed enough to be healthy and strong, why not do a random act of kindness and offer your seat to someone else? He or she may appreciate the gesture, and it gives you a chance to spread a little pixie dust to others while at Disney. :flower3:

Wait--I have to add a third item to my list:

3. People who take up a seat on the bus with their shopping bags while there are young children standing nearby. They can hold the bags on their lap and let the child sit.

There is a safety issue. People are not supposed to sit in the wheelchair if they don't have to. This is why they move to another seat.

A few weeks ago DH and I were walking out of Epcot via the international gateway with our friends. My husband and one of our friends were walking a few meters in front of my self and my other friend and we were walking down the slope straight after the France/UK bridge. As we were walking we saw another family of mum, dad, teenage sister and younger child (about4?) in a stroller. The teenager was pushing the stroller and she decided to push it hard and let go of it down the slope (where there were quite a few people walking.) Anyway the stroller goes zooming off and one edge of the stroller hits my DH in the ankles and as this caused a jolt the child fell out and started crying. My husband stopped where he was and bent down to make sure the child was OK. By this time teenager had arrived, scooped the child up, smacked the back of his legs and told him to shut up crying and didn't even bother to apologise to my husband!! Mum and dad were a few paces behind and said nothing. I couldn't believe that someone would be so silly as to push a child in a stroller down the hill in the first place and then not care that the child was hurt. Plus then not to even apologise for hurting someone else in the process. Thinking back though it was probably good that it hit my DH when it did otherwise it could have built up more speed and the child could have been more seriously hurt.

I think that this post definately goes both ways. This past trip in Nov. we got seats and a girl with a baby came on. I told my DD12 to get up and she could sit on my lap. Instead, she sat on DDbestfriend's lap. When we offered the seat to the mom with the baby she said no. We talked her into it and she thanked DD and then thanked me. I have been there before so I know what it's like. We have been going since 1995, and I have on most occasions had my DS get up or put DD on my lap.

But the 2 things that get me:

1) People with wheelchairs that come up late to the stop and get on first with a group of people and they all get seats and others that had been standing there have to stand. Or the people in wheelchairs that don't even sit in the wheelchair they take up yet another seat.

2) Parents that let the little kids sit in a seat and not move them on their lap. But what is worse was this past trip, there was a mother sitting with the stroller in front of her, baby in car seat sitting next to her and then little boy (less then 4) in yet another seat. How hard would it have been to put the stroller in front of the little boy and put the car seat on her lap.

I think sometimes it would be sooo much easier if they made everyone rent a stroller, then you wouldn't have to deal with it on the bus. I know that my comment is not what people want to hear and it may lead to being bashed. But lets face it, it would solve alot of the problems that arise from strollers. I know that since I have been going to disney DD was 2 at the time. I did bring my stroller. Was only there for 2 days. When we took the family back a year and a half later I didn't bring her stroller, nor did I even rent one. And everything worked out great.

Please understand that everyone that comments on here is right. Whether you agree or not, it is their opinion. They are not wrong for feeling the way that they do.

I just think that if everyone just relaxed and took a deep breath that things would work out. I know in the end after everything that has happened to us we realize that we are in the happiest place on earth and we have fun.

Sorry this was so long.

How about if Disney provided strollers for free, or perhaps like 5 bucks a day? I go to local zoos that have them free, or a wagon or something. If this is such a big problem then perhaps Disney should not charge 17 bucks a day for a double. Don't get me wrong. I have 2 kids and will be renting, but it kills me that I could buy one for the same price I will be spending on the rental.

As for the mother that could have put the car seat on her lap, I don't think that is a good idea. That would hurt. If I saw a mother with a car seat on her lap I would give up my seat for her to put the car seat down.

Like you said, this is just my opinion. :)

This is a safety issue. The restraints on the busses are designed for the chair only - not the chair + a person

Ok, so Mom has to handle the baby in the car seat and you want the less than 4 year old boy to be in charge of the stroller? I can't see a child that young being able to ensure the stroller doesn't hurt anyone on a bus in motion. This was probably the safest arrangement for this family.

So the folks that have a long trek from the tram to the car or from the bus stop to the room (most of the resorts are HUGE) don't get to use a stroller? So, two adults have to try to wrangle 3 sleeping tots to the car. I don't see how that is possible.

While we were there last July, we were waiting for the tram from the parking lot to MGM. The lines were very packed and everyone was pushing to get to the line. We finally (all seven of us) got on a tram and waited. and waited.
and waited. The tram was broke. So another tram drove up behind, and we were told to get off our tram to get on that one. However, the people in line ran around the other side to get on. As I was entering from one side and sliding over so the rest of my family could get on, a woman (from the line) came from the other side and told me to scoot over. I explained politely that I couldn't because my family was coming on. She cussed me out like you would not believe. I have to admit, it really bothered me. My husband couldn't understand why I was so flustered over it, after all it was a stranger, and she was the one in the wrong. It was just embarrassing. I think it also bothered me because WE WERE IN DISNEY, THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH!

Oh well, I got over it quickly and we had a great day!

I think that it's the group of people who gets seats who are with the person in a wheelchair that was frustrating the poster. Seating a person or 2 or any children probably wouldn't bother the poster, but if there's a group of adults that get seated and the people who have been waiting for awhile then have to stand that's the issue.

Of course as I understand it, the flip side is that there are a limited number of places to anchor wheelchairs and if there are several people in wheelchairs ahead of someone else in a wheelchair they might have to wait until the next bus even if it's not crowded.

And it does make sense to bring the wheelchair in first since it would be difficult to secure it with a bus full of people.

People in wheelchairs are loaded first because of logistics. It isn't easy to strap down a wheelchair with people stepping over you. It is easier and faster to not load others before loading the wheelchair. Also those in wheelchairs have to wait until everyone else has exited before they can get off the bus. I have even on occasion had to ride to the next stop have someone else off loaded and then the driver go back to my stop because a wheelchair guest insisted she wanted to be loaded last and I was blocked from exiting. I always ask the driver who he wants on first when there are 2 because if the route has multiple stops it does make a difference which wheelchair is loaded first.
The wheelchair person's family is allowed get on with the person in the chair. You want them to spearate and the rest of the family wait to get on. My kids did that once and were left at the stop without me. TG they were teens and we had cell phones. Not separating from the group. Sorry
If a person is on an ECV or using a wheelhcair it is their choice whether to transfer or not. There are safety factors and it is often safer to transfer.

Okay, I totally don't get why people are annoyed with the group of people getting seated beforehand with the wheel chair guest. That is a strange gripe. When would the rest of the group board the bus? Does that REALLY bother some people on the DIS boards? Nah...I probably read that wrong.

I too am a woman with a baby on the WDW buses, and I have rarely been offered a seat on a full bus. Even if I were offered, I'd probably decline but thank the offer sincerely. I also do not understand why it offends so many moms when they are not offered a seat. We are all tired when we leave the park, any time of day! :earsboy:

That cigarette issue is most annoying. My baby sitting in his stroller had a lady stroll by so close that she almost ashed her smoke on his cheek. My instinct came out and we almost had a fist fight! I actually yelled at her (and she at me) about keeping the smoking to the smoking area especially on crowded days! My DH had to talk me down, especially since she was ready to go at me too! (Not one of my better moments :( )

It is kind of funny though, that when we are sharing these stories it is like we are preaching to the choir. It is just nice to be heard by people who understand! :chat:

I'm not bothered by it, but was explaining what I thought the poster's issue was. If I were to be irritated, I would quickly realize how glad I am to have the ability to stand even when tired and I'd quit my griping. :)

No, this poster says BOTH peeve her.

I have been on more than one bus where the driver just straps them into the wheelchair while securing the wheelchair.

Being the OP, my intention was NOT to start a debate thread. In fact, I can't stand it when threads turn into debates, because things can get ugly fast, and that is NOT what I come to the DISboards to read!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Period.

"If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all"

So, that being said...can we get back to the original point of the thread? :)

I know what you mean! What, would they like to trade places with the wheelchair bound person? They have enough inconveniences in life that making someone wait two whole minutes isn't going to kill us.

Amen DizneyKrazed!!

I was enjoying the thread until it took a right turn..... :wizard:

I sincerely apologize for offending anyone on this post. I certainly didn't mean to, honest. As with children I have been on both sides of the fence of having small ones and now having older ones who do offer seats to the older generation and to people (men and women) who have small children in there arms. I know what it's like to carry children around after a long day at the parks. And some at the time when my children small never offered seats and may have thought maybe I shouldn't have run my kids so hard that I had to hold them because they were sleeping. And as far as the woman with the carseat, stroller and small child, her husband was with her, sitting across the aisle down a few seats. We all do the same thing: pay a pretty good amount of money for a vacation and want to get everything that you can out of a park in a day.

And as for the wheelchair comment: it's more towards the way they run things at Disney then the peoples fault. I also know from a family member that works for Disney that people who get on buses with wheelchairs are allowed to sit in their wheelchair. And I know that they have to get on first. I assume that it goes by what the driver wants. And I'm not asking their family members to ride a different bus. I just think that they should have a different way to do things. This is not against the people, it's about Disney. I'm very greatful that no one in my family has to be in one and that we have our health. But I know that I am not the only one that feels this way. When you have been waiting in line for the sometimes slow bus service and have been on your feet most of the day (which yes is my own decision, no one makes me) and someone walks up and gets right on, it's a little upsetting. Unfortunately there is no way to solve this problem because that's the way things are run.

Again I sincerely apologize if I offended anyone, that certainly wasn't my intention.

:flower3: Truce on my part!!!!

"Okay, I totally don't get why people are annoyed with the group of people getting seated beforehand with the wheel chair guest."

I think I know what the poster was complaining about. It's not the avg. size family with one person in a wheelchair. It's the large groups who come up at the last minute with one person in a chair or scooter. The driver loads the person with the chair first, then their entire group, several times we had this happen with groups of 12+ people, boards thru the rear door, bypassing the entire line, some of them literally pushing aside the people in line. Now the people who have been waiting for the bus either have to stand or wait for the next one. Now I'm not saying that every family with a person in a wheelchair or scooter does this, this is just what we experienced several different times last fall.
