I just read off the continental airlines page that you can bring in "collapsible strollers" on as carry-on personal item, i was wondering how many of you have done it if any? or should i just check in my umbrella stroller as checked luggage, because i did by a bag for it to keep it clean.

Thank you

I travel a lot with my stroller. You will need to check in all of you checked luggage at the main desk and keep the stroller with you to take to the gate. Once at the gate, a gate agent will give you a little disposable tag to put on your stroller. Then, you leave it right outside of the plane door on the jetway. The luggage people actually store it in a place up front of the plane. Then when you get off after landing, it will be propped outside the plane door if you disembark on the jetway or it will be at the bottom of the stairs if you disembark and take the stairs to the ground.

It is very helpful to keep the stroller with you so you can plop the kiddos in it after disembarking and stroll them through the airport.

Hope that helps. I have never had any trouble in doing this.

your reply was very helpful!

I can't even imagine having to carry DD around the airpot to look for our checked luggage.

Thanks again

Yup, check it right at the gate before you board the plane, this is what we do, it will be waiting for you as you get off the plane, VERY convenient!!:D

I agree . With 3 in strollers at one time we chose to check them as baggage, and guess what, we were 1/2 to the hotel before we remembered them. We now do the gate check. DD was sleeping when we landed last summer. She barely woke up, as the stroller was open and waiting for her.

we always do the gate check, but have often had to retreive the stroller from checked luggage - it seems to depend on the airport

Bev, it usually isn't the airport that determines where the stroller ends up, it's the gate-check tag, at least on US domestic flights.

Gate-checking handles two functions; storing personal mobility devices during flight, and also disposing of the overflow carryon luggage that will not fit in the overhead bins or under the seat. The tags reflect this, and there will either be a system of two different colours of tag, or there will be a place on the tag to mark the delivery location of the item. In many cases, if the tag is not the proper colour or specifically marked "DELIVER TO GATE", it may be sent to the carousels along with the baggage.

Most US airlines use pink tags for mobility devices, including strollers, while they may use yellow for overflow luggage, but there is no guarantee that the tags will always be a predictable colour. You should always first ask the gate agent for a gate-check tag for a stroller, rather than the ramp agent. If the gate agent does not have them, then the ramp agent will handle it, but the gate agent usually has more time to fill the info out properly. Look at the tag after it is put on, and make sure that the information is correct.

Yes! I HIGHLY reccommend checking the stroller as you board the plane. (aka..gate check) ALSO keep it in the bag. We did this in October 04 and the bag really came in handy and kept the stroller clean.
