Anyine have a chld with an umbilical hernia that had to be surgiclly fixed?

DD has one and the doctor said it should close by the time she is 4, otherwise she would need surgery.

It has gotten smaller, but I don't think it is going to close in the next 6 months.

Just wondering what the surgery was like and the pain involved.
I am sure it is just a day surgery.

Emily had one which has closed - per her doctor at her 4 year old check up. I actually thought it was still there, but she said everything is o.k.

Good luck to you.

I had one. I had it fixed when I was in college though. It was same day surgery. I slept pretty much the rest of that day. I was sore, but nothing major. Getting up from laying down was a bit difficult for a day or so, I had to roll on my side and push up with my hands so as not to use my stomach muscles. After a couple days I was fine. I couldn't lift anything over 10 pounds for a while though.

My niece had one too, and her BB stuck out a good inch from her body when she was a baby.

Hers got smaller and smaller and now that she's 4, hers is closed also. They told my SIL that my niece would need surgery, but lo and behold, it closed on it's own.

Thanks. I hope it closes in the next 6 months. I know it is still open, when you push on it, it gurgles.

I had one when I was younger. my Dad said whenever I cried or got gassy it would blow up like a balloon! LOL
I did have surgery on it, but I don't remember much about it. I know I did have to stay in the hospital at least overnight but that was 38 years ago. I'm sure these days you are in and out.

My son had an umbilical hernia repaired when he was nine months old. It was same day surgery and he recovered very quickly. Didn't seem to be in too much pain.

He's 19 now, so it's been a number of years :)

My dd had one. The ped. told us that if it does not close by the time she is three she will have to have surgery..
Well dd turns three take her to the Ped.. Ped. sends us to a surgeon. The surgeon says we should wait he still thinks it is going to close. He said it is a very easy surgery and he does it all the time. Well we wait another year. DD turns 4 we go back to the Ped. she says she is fine it closed .
It still might close. I wish you pixie dust. :wizard:

DS also has one and we are also waiting until he's 4 to see if it closes on it's own. He's 2.5 now, so we still have time.

It is good to hear stories of those that have closed by 4.

DD3 was born with one. The whole was the size of a nickel. Her belly button protruded and was about the size of a golf ball. We took her for a consult when she was 1.5. They said they would look at it again in a year to see if it got any smaller. We took her back this past summer and it hadn't gotten any smaller. They said when it closes it gradual so the fact that it hadn't gotten any smaller most likely meant it wouldn't. She had the surgery in October, the month before she turned 3. It was outpatient, we took her home that evening. They stitch the hole close and also have to cut and I guess shape the belly button. She was in a lot of pain for the next few days. She couldn't use her stomach muscles. Now she is just fine and still loves to show off her "new" belly button. We bought her first 2 peice bathing suit and she can't wait to wear it!!!

Funny you should ask about this! My dd, who just turned 3, has one, and we will be going to her annual appt with her ped. in a few weeks. We saw him a few weeks ago for an ear infection, and at that appt, he said her hernia looked like it might close on it's own, but regardless that there was some scar tissue there that could complicate later on down the road, and he thinks it's better to have everything taken care of and repaired. So, we will be talking about next steps at her annual appt in a few weeks. Once I find out details, I'll try to let you know. Her BB does still stick out a bit, we actually call it her "gonzo nose" because that's what it looks like!! :rotfl2:

I know she wil be really excited to wear a 2 pc this summer too if we get it taken care of....

My DS had one. It protruded at least an inch, and it squeeked when you pushed on it!

They told me it should close on it's own, and around 4 it was gone. It was really a pretty gradual thing. To be honest, he may still have just a tiny one. Sometimes the middle of his belly button looks a bit odd, but I'm not worried.

That's what I thought about Emily, too. I really expected at her 4 year old appointment we were going to be discussing repair. I was preparing myself even up to the point where she was pushing on it. But she said it was closed, and she knows best.

But I will probably still ask about it again at her 5 year old appointment.

I just don't want DD to have to go through surgery. I guess no parent does.

The biggest problem is it gets caught in the occasional zipper, no matter how careful you are. She also plays with it.
