Having my first ultrasound today for some "female issues" as I sit here drinking gallons of water and panicing I wonder what it's like. Can any one clue me in?

First of all, I hope everything is ok.

Second, don't worry about the ultrasound. They put some gel on your stomach (it's pretty cold) and they rub the ultrasound thing over it to see what appears on the screen. There is no pain whatsoever involved, just a little discomfort from not being able to relieve yourself of the water.

Good luck.

My best to you too. Do you know if it is to be an abdominal or pelvic ultrasound? BOth are painless. Pelvic or ******l ultrasound involves insertion of a probe in to the ******. It is truly painless. I have had one. Either way, I hope you get good news. Most uncomfortable part is the full bladder!!

Oh, I see I was censored. LOL. Didn't know v a g i n a l was a bad word!! LOL

I've had both kinds of ultrasounds done (internal and external) during my pregnancies, and neither is uncomfortable. As the pp said, having a full bladder is the worst part of it!! I hope you get good results. Best wishes.

I take it you're not pregnant. That's the only U/S I've had. The worst part is the full bladder especially when they start pressing on it. My advice: If you have to use the bathroom, USE IT!!!! There will still be plenty of water left in your system. Before my first U/S, I went the bathroom 3 times before and everything was fine. With my second, I went twice before and everything was still fine. Good Luck!!

Ask them if you can empty your bladder if you are uncomfortable. My hospital has such advanced ultrasound equipment that you don't have to have a full bladder anymore.

My guess is that you will have the internal u/s. It is uncomfortable but painless.

In total agreement with all of the other posts here! During the last ultrasound I had done, the technician told me to go and empty my bladder some because it was too full! Boy was I more than happy to comply!! :p

bellacam, I hope all is ok though!!

The last time I had an ultrasound, the tech told me she went into that field because she cannot stand to cause pain to the patients. She said she felt that was the only medical field where one does not cause any pain. I hope you find positive information from your test and that all is well. Best wishes to you!

I didn't need a full bladder for my ultrasound for my pregnancy either. Maybe it's different for different medical issues? The ultrasound didn't hurt at all...sometimes I thought that she was pressing down a bit too hard, but that was just uncomfortable and not painful. Good luck and I hope everything turns out okay. :)

Thanks for the help...the full bladder was the worst part.....well the problem is a cyst the size of an orange on my ovary!!!Add that to the endometriosis and I have a gunk party going on down there! Just glad I know why I have so much pain...treatment seems relativley easy though! Thanks again for the responses!

Well - that's good news! I always say that the anticipation is the worst part when having something done for the first time. Glad this part is over for you.

bellacam,

So glad to hear that your diagnosis was something easily treatable.:sunny: I'm happy everything turned out well.

Glad to hear everything went o.k. and that it is easy to treat.

Had my 1st ******l ultrasound 6wks ago, back for 2nd yesterday. Doc found 3cysts on my left ovary totalling 1/2 the size of a tennis ball, didnt change in size over that 6wks. Doc is having me come back again in 3months for a 3rd ultrasound. Will let me know then what we'll do.
