okay, going in to hospital wednesday for an ultra sound, just have a few questions:

1. what is it exactly?

2:. how long does it take?

3:. do you have to stay overnight

and 4: how long does it take for results of the ultrasound to be processed

An ultrasound, or sonogram, uses sounds waves to look inside your body and see whats going on in there. Most ultrasounds don't take more than 20 minutes or so but it can really depend on the tech and what you are having an ultrasound of (what part of the body). Ultrasounds are out patient tests, often performed in an imaging center or physicians office, so I would not think an overnight stay would be required.

Ultrasound results won't be processed until they are read by the radiologist on staff, sometimes a few minutes but it could be days depend on there work load and amount of urgency in the test.

You should also receive information re: special conditions. Some need full bladders, some empty. Some you can eat, some require fasting. Call the office where it is being done and ask. They will give you the office procedure. I have had mine read immediately by a doctor at one facility and the other require your GP to get the results.

Either way, I have never been in the office for more than an hour for an ultrasound and never had any meds to take for it. Good luck.

I think the bladder issues are just for pelvic u/s. I've had those (many!), plus upper abdominal, and have a heart one this week. They just run a wand over the area, input numbers into the computer, and you are done.
