Any suggestions??
Fellow sufferer here, since I was in junior high.
to you. I know the feelinghappybratpack said:If I start getting really stressed for a period of time (where I can almost feel the stomach acids going) or if I eat badly I'll get bouts of bleeding.

Sounds like this warrants further work up since it was a guess whether you had an ulcer in the first place and you're still not feeling right. They should run basic bloodwork but also may want to rule out HPylori and celiac sprue (the latter if you're of Irish heritage). A "GI workup" usually starts with an Upper GI series which is a fairly simple XRay that can show whether you have an ulcer or not. If it's not clear, they may send you on to endoscopy. In the meantime, if you do have an ulcer, the protonix will help to heal it as well as lessen the pain. There are, however, lots of other things besides ulcers that can cause pain in the abdomen so you really need to let your doctor know you're not feeling better (they assume you are if they don't hear back from you).Mermaid02 said:That's what they think I have and I have been pretty miserable for a week. These are essentially the same test and not completely definitive at that (it's just an XRay). If you want a definitive answer you should ask for an endoscopy where they look directly into your stomach with a scope.I think I'm going to ask for a barium swallow and if that doesn't show anything definate, an upper GI.

I'm not in the medical field so I don't know if this is true in all cases, but in mine when I vomited blood it looked like coffee grounds. I was very young and had no idea that's what was happening to me and I almost bled to death. I was mis-diagnosed in the ER and didn't get a final determination until my mother saw what I was vomiting and took me back. They did the gastroscope and discovered the ulcer.grinningghost said:Not to scare anyone, because this happened in 1952 - but my Dad's father died from a peptic ulcer. He bled to death in his home. I actually just found this out when doing my genealogy research. My Dad was 9 and he said he remembers blood seeping out from under the bathroom door. Horrific stuff. I'm glad modern medicine has come a long way. Take care of those ulcers people!

I'm not trying to be gross or too graphic, but I didn't know if this was common knowledge or not.
Yep. All I can say now is thank God for the purple pill. I was told (and I hope it's true) that you can't get an ulcer on Prilosec or Nexium.grinningghost said:I don't think it is common knowledge. I really never knew much about ulcers at all, except that my dad had one in the 70's that put him in the hospital. I remember him being very sick, but that's all.
I guess it can get pretty ugly if not taken care of, huh?
