This is gonna get ugly, I can tell you that right now. There is another thread about people with ECVs on the Theme Park Attractions forum. So, do we want to go flood the thread with emails about why we do need them, or should we just ask it to be locked right away?

Its not getting ugly because of you its the people with no understanding of what a day in a wheelchair /ecv is really like. anyone who complains should be made to try it for a day,

I posted on the thread. It was the last thing that I needed to read today or this week in general. I leave in 5 days for WDW, and I'm so upset about it all. It's the kind of attitude and thinking that many on that thread have that has caused me to postpone renting a WC or ECV. It's so hard to believe that people have no idea what an inconvenience using one can be. They see it as a luxury.

I've been talking to my DH about it today. We've been going over the pros and cons of both using a WC and a ECV. Because of my concern about people like those who posted negative comments and those in the park who aren't on the boards, he decided it would be easier for me if we rented a WC. He is more than willing to push me around rather than have me in tears because of comments concerning an ECV (he will just fold up the wc and carry it on the bus or boats rather than cause people to wait; he's doing that because of my feelings and not theirs). He said that he will prepare himself to make nasty comments back at people if they do to me.

I'm very happy that he is willing to go through so much for me (pushing me around), but I hate the fact that he has to. I just wish I could walk the parks and not worry about it. I guess sometimes people need to truly put themselves in other people's shoes. They think that people are falling all over themselves to rent a WC or ECV for the luxury that they never think of how hard it is for those who need it to actually go through with it.

I know that I am being silly. Perhaps it's the pregnancy hormones (my disability isn't that I'm pregnant but being pregnant doesn't help it either). I just want to walk and not worry about it. Without a WC or ECV I can't go to the parks. It's frustrating.

Do not think twice about renting an ecv. Many people have no understanding or sympathy for those who need them. My mother has needed one for our trips to Disney and I would not allow narrow minded people to make her feel bad for using it. She does not use it for easy quick ride access, contrary to their beliefs. She uses it cause otherwise she could not do the parks.

If you need it to enjoy the parks then do it. Rent the ecv and enjoy. You and DH deserve the time. Would you complain to parents of small crying, fussy childrens? People just need to go on with there own lives.

I am the mother of a son with a hidden disability, and have a thick crust over my skin to ward off the "looks" we get when he has a meltdown! At least we are intelligent! Stupidity comes in all forms.

I would never think ill of someone in a wheelchair or ECV.

Don't even worry about these folks whining. These are also the people that won't give up their seats on the bus to a pregnant woman holding a sleeping toddler! Jerks are everywhere.

Enjoy your trip. Get the ECV and have a blast.

I read the post you are referring to and it was mostly about people renting them who didn't need them, like saving their feet so they could dance the night away at Pleasure Island, and about those people who didn't care about who they may hit.

So, don't get your feather's ruffled so quickly.

I'm not condoning those who bash ECV riders, but as a person who has been hit by and ECV and was screamed at by the driver and her family about not getting out of the way of a disabled person and needlessly distressing her (she ran into me from behind), I can understand many of the feelings.

ECVs/drivers aren't bad, it's those who abuse them and do not care about those they encounter is the issue. The talk is just as bad concerning strollers, too.

I know that I may get flamed for this, but the whole thing revolves around common courtesy to your fellow park-goers. Some people are rude, others not. Unfortunately, it is the rude people that make the biggest impression.

Just something to think about.

Get your ECV, Enjoy Disney , 99.9% of people will not care at all that you are using a ECV. The other .1% Well

I so know how you feel! My situation is that at times I am fine and need to walk as much as I can., other times I need to be in my chair... The looks I get when I get off the ECV and walk. Ugg. I hate it. I rent the ECV some days to save my husband ( a senior citizen, not a spring chicken-lol) from having to use all his energy pushing me in my chair. It is a hard choice to make.
