UGLY American Girl Doll

I take it you didn't read the books. Kirsten is an immigrant. She never would have had fancy clothes. I think if you read the series you'll fall in love with her, frizzy hair and all.

Are you close to one of the stores? If you are you can take the doll with you and they have styists that do amazing things with the hair. It also seems like I have seen some tips on the AG website about how to manage the hair.

Oh, yes, we've read all the AG books. DD chose the Kirsten doll for the length of hair. Its just not a texture she can work with. She already has a Just-like-me doll from last Christmas, but the hair just isn't quite long enough for the styling. I just looked at AG's website. Don't know why I didn't see this before, perhaps its new, or I just overlooked it. Its a just-like-me doll with very long blonde hair, in a modern, blue outfit. That would be perfect for dd. I'll order it for Valentine's Day, the timing will work out. I'd like to still get free shipping, anyone have any codes? Thanks! Now we'll have 3 dolls to dress!!!

AG is really easy and nice to work with.. I am sure they will let you exchange if your daughter will let you.. My little girl got Elizabeth for Christmas and just loves her.. ofcourse, she took her hair down too.

My own hair is kinky and frizzy. I am not ugly. (sob, sob)
:confused3

I'm sure you're beautiful!:flower3:

Its just that I was envisioning something different than what I got--something like the dolls we see on the hair styling DVD from AG. Both DD and I have tried to follow them with our AG just-like-me doll, but her hair just wasn't quite long enough for many of the styles. We wanted a doll with longer hair. We can't work with the texture of the Kirsten doll. Oh, well......like dh said, its not my doll, its dd's doll and she loves it. It was just that it was her main present and I wanted it perfect, I feel I "blew it". I'll return some of my really useless gifts and use the money to buy dd another AG doll for Valentine's Day. I saw the perfect one on their website--not a character doll, a Just-like-me doll in modern dress, with really long, smooth hair that she could work with better. I figure by Valentine's Day dd will be getting frustrated with Kirsten and appreciate another one.

Have you been wetting her hair before you have brushed it? At the AG store they said to never, ever brush the hair unless you first sprayed it with water. Maybe that is why it has turned out so frizzy?? When we went this summer, my daughter had her JLM doll's hair styled and the stylist saturated her hair before she touched it with a brush. Anyway, just a thought that could possibly help.

Have you searched for information on straightening dolls' hair? It depends on what the hair is made of, but I know that with some types of doll hair, you can straighten it by dipping it in hot water.

i dont know from dolls but when I do wig work be it synthetic or natrual I always used steam for straightening... just brushing makes it frizzy

I have heard people say they've had luck with her by just wetting her hair and combing in it. Others say they've had to carefully wash Kirsten's hair in some Woolite and cool water. Her hair does tend to be difficult to manage!

All the dolls are pretty much the same materials, just the hair is styled differently. My now 20yo DD has Kirsten and it just took a little time for the braid kinks to settle out. We did use water w/ a touch of woolite in a spray bottle and the AG brush, but her hair was fine. BTW, between 4 DDs and myself, we have 8 dolls and the 7 who have had their hair "played with" all had issues. I certainly wouldn't be buying another doll just b/c the hair hasn't relaxed any, esp if your DD likes it just fine.

I *loved* my Samantha doll (from the early 80's when there were only 2 dolls) and I inflicted various hairstyles on my Samantha over the years. To smooth it out, I would wash it with very hot water, comb it through gently and set it on large soft rollers. When the soft rollers came out there would be just a gentle wave to the hair at the ends and a nice smooth, straight appearance. The Woolite sounds like it might help, too, but I haven't done it.

I can tell you that I loved reading all the books - Kirsten, Molly, Samantha, etc. and I think that it is great to be exposed to all different historical time periods and lifestyles (rich, poor, various cultures, etc. ) and reading the books I did made me into a better person. Your daughter loves that "farm girl" doll - and that sounds like a perfect present to me. And again, JMO, but *any* of those dolls has a ton more to offer than, say, Bratz - for example that lip gloss and perfect hair aren't what make someone love you.

Before I launch into a musical version of the Velveteen Rabbit, I think I'll stop myself. :cutie:

Have you tried the Doll Hair book from American Girl? My dd has it and it has hair styles for dolls of every hair type. It even has styles for short haired dolls. You probably could style the shorter haired doll. And give Kirsten's hair some time. It probably will eventually straighten out.
